TracyMemberI know from a thread a # of days ago, it’s hard to adopt out a cat, but I thought I would try this board. We have a wonderful cat, she’s black, 10-years old, healthy & loving. Unfortunately, we also have 3-YO twins, and she has started acting out to the point where we have to find a home for her. She starting peeing. I know, this doesn’t make anyone want to adopt her, but she has never ever ever done this before. However, she was always an “only child” and needs a home with no other pets or kids.
I can’t even believe I am writing this, as she was my baby for 10 years. But we just can’t keep her anymore. :-(

LisaMParticipantTracy – why dont you work with a behaviorist first? You might be able to solve the problem and keep your baby.
Its important to try your best when you commit
to an animal and at least see what might be possible to fix the problem.
I had a problem with my cat when I first brought a new dog into the home, and ya know, its still not perfect, but I worked out a solution with a behaviorist so we can all live together.

hammerheadParticipantI know this will piss everyone off. I just hope your 3 year olds don’t start pissing everywhere. What would you do with the children? This stuff is very fustrating to a rescuer. The cat came first but the cat is easy to get rid of not the children.
I do hope you try the animal behaviorist or someone adopts your cat. Or I guess it can join the other 100, 10 year old cats at the shelter, because of the same reason.
Remember the cat was a commitment?!

CaduceusMemberMy cats are doing the same thing now that there is a 3rd cat in the house.
They just have to get used to it.
1. It will not last that long.
2. Cat pee isn’t even hard to clean. Find a product called “resolve”
3. How much do you love your animal if you’re willing to give it away once you actually have to pick up after it?

JanSParticipantAlso…are you sure it’s because of your twins? Have you been to a vet to make sure there isn’t a health problem involved? Just a suggestion…

pamMemberTo get back to your original inquiry – geez! Try Gingers Pet Rescue, http://www.gingerspetrescue.org

GenHillOneParticipantThat’s tough, Tracy. I can tell that you really DON’T want to give up your cat, so I would echo Jan’s suggestion to make sure it isn’t a medical issue first. There is also a pheromone spray you can get at Next to Nature. If the toddlers are stressing her out, it may help. It worked for us on couch scratching (spray it at the base of the couch), even though I don’t know what my kits could possibly be stressed about.

marianneParticipantI’m with you hammerhead! The cat came first. You do NOT piss me off. People who consider a committment to their animals disposable piss me off.

RainyDay1235MemberThe cat is either….
A) Not getting enough attention and is acting out – you CAN fix this
B) Has a urinary tract infection and needs medical help

rs261MemberPaxil does wonders for cats as well…or so I hear. Animal behavorists will be able to diagnose and perscribe it if necessary, its also good for cumpulsive licking, scratching, not getting along with other pets, etc.

TracyMemberThanks for the advice we have been working w/ a vet and meds, etc. And we keep trying. And yes I want to keep her, but this can’t keep happening.
To all the holier-than-thou people who are mad that my cat needs a new home, yes, I was thinking I would get rid of my twins because they pee all over too.
September 4, 2008 at 9:44 pm #637324
marianneParticipantI truly hope for a good outcome for your loving pet of 10 years.
I also truly hope that you seriously evaluate your ability to commit to any future pet you would even consider adopting while you have children in your home.

angelescrestParticipantYou know–it’s obvious that some of you responding so harshly don’t have twins! You can be an animal lover AND an empathetic person. It sounds like a major stressful situation, and it would be nice if someone were able to help Tracy out, not condemning her. Yeah, I’d keep the twins and ignore the rancor.

changingtimesMemberdoesnt matter if you have one child or six! it says alot about a person if they can give an animal they have had for 10 years!!!!!! away. just because it pees on the carpet! I can maybe see if the children were allergic to the cat and they were having asthma or hives, but were talking about a little pee here :(
September 6, 2008 at 4:06 am #637327
CaduceusMemberI knew a 23 year old mother who took care of her sick mom, four dogs and two cats, her new born child and worked.
I do not have to feel sorry for a person who’d rather give their pet away, rather than clean up after it.
September 6, 2008 at 4:22 am #637328
angelescrestParticipantReally judgemental. There are all sorts of people and all sorts of situations. I think Tracy was asking if you could help her out.
September 6, 2008 at 5:06 am #637329
hammerheadParticipantJudgemental. NO Reality. Do not call me holier than thou. I see this all the time in rescue. You should see the shelter. I know Ginger rescue isn’t going to take a 10 yr old cat peeing everywhere. Tracy herself said the cat was healthy why we would believe otherwise.
Animals are easy to DISPOSE of period. Children are not. Tracy if you were really going to get rid of the children you would have done so by now. We all know they AREN’T going anywhere.
3 years old are running around causing havic. The cat is stressing out to that. For all we know the kids are pulling on the cats tail. Neither here or there about that. The cat is peeing and that is the problem. So the cat goes. Hopefully she is willing to try paxil it DOES work. Is she willing to try?
This is going to be very morbid. It is a shame that when people take their cat/dog to the shelter because of THESE type of situations that they CAN’T hold the vein the needle goes into.
A 10 year old cat really has no chance. While ginger’s rescue is ok. I KNOW they are FULL and can’t even think about taking this type of cat. Unless YOU KNOW someone, then great.
Yes I agree she needs help. Again the REALITY OF IT SUCKS. No matter what something it going to get the needle. When and if she should bring that cat to a shelter if that is what ends up happening. She is pushing out another cat out that will have to make room for her cat.
So again the reality of it SUCKS.
I am not holier than thou or judgemental. But KNOW THE TRUTH.
ANIMALS ARE EASY TO DISPOSE OF NOT CHILDREN

angelescrestParticipantWell, she’s trying to “know someone” via the WSB.
