Myr-myrParticipantReviews were so-so a year ago. Anyone know if the menu and the service have improved recently? I’ve a friend here from Texas who might have a hankering for some good BBQ. Got recommendations for any other BBQ places?

odrokuParticipantBeen there a few times. I think “so-so” is a fair assessment. Never great, but never bad.
Having eaten BBQ in Texas and being friends with a good number of BBQ-loving Texans, I’m not sure you can hope to do much that would keep a Texan from telling you just how far from real Texas BBQ whatever you offer them will be.
Jones and Pecos Pit are both fine. Never tried the place where you are meant to “meet the man,” but heard good things. My Texas friends laughed at me when I put sauce on my BBQ. Apparently sauce is not part of the deal with some of them. They also seemed to prefer beef ribs and brisket to pork. I don’t even know whether you can find pork ribs around here.
I don’t expect this is much useful, but…now we talked BBQ on a West Seattle Saturday.

Myr-myrParticipantThanks, Odroku.
I think we’ll pass on the local BBQ offering in favor of the many other lovely NW options.

sbreParticipantActually got some take-out from the Brickyard this evening and thoroughly enjoyed everything: wedge salad, pulled pork, chicken, brisket (nary a dry piece to be found), the baked beans and coleslaw too. However, all that delicious food had one underlying unpleasantness, they use Styrofoam to-go containers.
Boooooo….

kootchmanMemberThey don’t use Styrofoam.. Styrofoam is not used thusly. Styrofoan is an extruded product, .. white foam is styrne with a pentane ot some other heat expanding pellet cooked in an inline process or a steam bun line. One is extruded, one is expanded, and they are worlds apart. Styrofoam is trademark of Dow Chemical. 99 per cent of the time used to insulate buildings and stuctures and way tooo expensive to use in consumer packaging.

Myr-myrParticipantYour comment is relevant to the discussion how? Good grief, Kootchman, a bit further over the edge today, are we? As long as you are headed in that direction, here’s a quote from OSHA:
“Styrene is primarily a synthetic chemical that is used extensively in the manufacture of plastics, rubber, and resins. It is also known as vinylbenzene, ethenylbenzene, cinnamene, or phenylethylene. About 90,000 workers, including those who make boats, tubs, and showers, are potentially exposed to styrene. Health effects from exposure to styrene may involve the central nervous system and include complaints of headache, fatigue, dizziness, confusion, drowsiness, malaise, difficulty in concentrating, and a feeling of intoxication.” Get the point?

Myr-myrParticipantSBRE, thanks for your comment. I think maybe we will check out that brisket.

redfoxxParticipantI ate there around a month ago and found the pulled pork to be extremely bland and the corn bread tasted artificial. I could only stomach half of it before tossing it.

dhgParticipantWhat, no love here for Berry’s BBQ? http://www.yelp.com/biz/berrys-bbq-burien
His beef brisket is very tasty!

maplesyrupParticipantI avoided it for more than a year because of experiences with crummy service and cold, dry food.
But the other night we wanted bbq and were too lazy to go to Jones. And I read on Yelp that they supposedly hired a real bbq chef (from Texas to boot!) a few months ago.
And…it was really good. Everyone liked their food, most of us liked it a lot. I’d definitely go back.
But like others have said, it’s probably not going to hold up to a Southerner’s expectations, regardless of how good it is.

Myr-myrParticipantI see that the Swinery does pulled pork sandwiches (Carolina style) and BBQ pulled pork sandwiches. Has anyone tried these?
June 4, 2012 at 8:59 pm #759762
villagegreenMemberMyr-myr, the Carolina style (my favorite) pulled pork sandwich from The Swinery is killer. I’ve only had it once, but good lord it was delicious!

Myr-myrParticipantTracy, thank you. As a small business owner myself I am very glad to learn of this policy. Otherwise, anyone could get away with trashing a competitor.

KenParticipantHmm. There is someplace in the NW that does
Carolina BBQ right?
I shall have to stop in at the Swinery and see. There are several variations of Carolina BBQ and I will report which it is for posterity :)
I have some of my own out of the freezer this week to compare it to.
I make “east of US-1” style vinegar based chopped BBQ for myself but am familiar with Lexington and South Carolina styles too.
