Anthony H.ParticipantGeico insurance has been joined by Weedmaps.com in advertising by use of airplane-dragged banners in the skies over Seattle. I think that burning leaded gasoline in order to advertise anything at all is terribly wrong (using unleaded gas is bad enough.) That’s right folks–the FAA never outlawed use of leaded gasoline for private airplanes and that’s what they run on! Does anyone else find this outrageous?

JayDeeParticipantMostly I find it noisy. First you have the Weekend mow and blowers, then the steam cleaners, and the Alki crotch rocket rev’ers, and then that damn plane. If I had a rocket launcher…

dhgParticipantI’ll join the protest. You know it has been a long long road since The Highway Beautification Act and its intentions have been steadily eroded. Advertisers look to land, sea and sky for a means to get your attention and it should be better regulated. Remember, after 911, how eerie it was to have such quiet skies? We can use less noise and less air pollution.
And just slightly off topic: Props to the Ivar’s advertising team that came up with billboards at the bottom of Lake Union to attract submarines. I think Ivar would’ve loved that joke.

B-squaredParticipanti couldn’t agree more.

emilycParticipantI cannot stand the geico plane. Circling the house every sunny weekend possible. Around and around. That banner makes me want to NOT buy geico insurance.

JeannieParticipantJaydee, thanks for the “Rocket Launcher” reference. I just listened to it again after many years. If it doesn’t give a person shivers, they have no soul. And considering the mess in Central America and elsewhere these days, it still resonates.

wakefloodParticipantNo doubt. Pair that with “They Call it Democracy” and “Waiting for a Miracle” and you have the most potent trio of activism-stirring songs of our era. And then some.

auParticipantYES! I would never purchase any ‘product’ from Geico because of that stupid plane circling around our skies.
All sky advertising should be banned!

SmittyParticipantNoise, air and sight pollution. The triple crown of irritating.
Maybe we all need to contact Geico so they know this is actually turning into a sales prevention tool! Or better yet – those covered by them threaten to cancel your plan!
If not, it will only multiply.
Anyone remember about a decade ago, someone was going to launch a stationary low-orbit satellite billboard? Can you imagine?

clark5080ParticipantI think we should go back to sky writing

PibalParticipantCaution: thread creep…
Lest anyone think that the leaded aviation fuel issue is not being addressed…
This is a very complex issue. Piston aircraft engines are designed for high octane fuel (prevents detonation in multiple operating environments). Removing the lead lowers the octane to a point where engine failures occur. Operational safety has therefore temporarily trumped the environmental impact until a suitable fuel substitute can be developed. This is an effort that has been underway for more than a decade. Here’s the latest update:

wakefloodParticipantAnd if it fails, they could make bigger rubber bands?
July 11, 2014 at 2:14 pm #810766
waynsterParticipantNo worse then the advertising on them stinky buses that run all over Seattle and king county…….
July 11, 2014 at 3:11 pm #810767
wakefloodParticipantWe’re well on our way to Blade Runner, with the 5-story advertising blimps filling the skies and blaring their ads.
I wouldn’t be surprised if that damn Southwest Plumbing dude has already booked the first Seattle permasign blimp.
Shoot me now.

metrognomeParticipantwaynster, I feel the need to defend my former employer as your snark is a few decades off plumb. Thanks to the Clean Air Act, no more stinky public transit buses. Metro has pioneered a lot of clean (bio) diesel/hybrid technology and works closely with bus mfgrs. to reduce emissions even further. Things like bioswales at bus bases and P&R’s add up to a comprehensive pollution reduction program.
‘Metro’s motorbus fleet consists of diesel-electric hybrid, electric trolley and diesel buses. At the end of 2013, approximately 64% of Metro’s bus fleet was comprised of zero emission electric trolleys or diesel-electric hybrids. The existing diesel bus fleet is projected to be 100% hybrid by 2019. These hybrid buses are up to 30 percent more fuel efficient than the diesels being replaced.’

Sorry for boring everyone else; the noise and irritation issue aside, even military and commercial airlines are working to reduce fuel consumption through engine design and efficiency and use of biofuels.
I always thought a 50cal sniper rifle was better than a rocket; less collateral damage on the ground as a properly placed shot would allow the pilot to make an emergency landing. Just kidding.
