Silly question, but we had something slip behind the back seat in our Outback, and the owner’s guide doesn’t say anything about how to lift it (it doesn’t just lift.. we’ve tried various ways). We would really like to retrieve this item. We asked the dealer, and they said that it had to be done in the shop, with a starting price tag of $150 and up. That seems a bit high to just take out the seat briefly. Does anyone know how to do this, what tools may be required, or know who could do it for less? Thanks.

wow, thanks! We’ll try that… seems the dealer could have told us, but I guess they have a vested interest in not.

Wow, whomever the dealer should be avoided from now on. That’s horrific. perhaps they misunderstood and thought you actually wanted to remove the seat rather than just tip it up? finding the cloth loop can be tricky, but not worth $150. In the past, i have actually taken the bench seat out to get a bit more room when sleeping in the back, and if you are traveling with the back seat down for some distance and want to be able to recline the front seats. a couple of bolts and they are out.

Walkers Renton Subaru… I won’t ever go there again, and we have for years. But, this last time — when we were quoted the $150+ (there was the “minimum” $150) — was a horrible experience. They wanted to replace the rear view mirror with a $272 parts plus labor mirror instead of just recalibrating the compass, which was all that was required, etc., and it went downhill from there.

We had a busy weekend with the garage sale and all, so we’ll look for that loop and hope we can find it. I don’t recall feeling such a thing when I had my hands back there trying to see if I could retrieve the item that went behind, but we’ll try again now that we know there is one. This is a 2002 Outback.
