Brian LauranceMemberI’m working with the editor of a national automotive publication, and an upcoming issue will focus on historic Buick dealership architecture.
As recently as the mid-1990’s, the now-defunct Huling Bros. Buick dealership on Fauntleroy in West Seattle still wore huge, red neon “Buick” scripts on the facade, dating from the 1940’s or 1950’s. The dealership resisted corporate pressure to remove the vintage signage in favor of the modern sign standard.
I would love to locate any vintage photographs of this dealership structure, showing the Buick scripts on the facade.
Can anyone help? My e-mail is: brianL@americanconstco.com

miwsParticipantHi Brian, have you tried contacting the Huling Family?
I know I’ve seen pics from around the ’50’s, but don’t exactly remember where. Perhaps it was in the West Seattle Herald, (not sure if there’s ever been any from that era posted here on WSB), or perhaps Huling had some posted on the Showroom walls. (About 16 years or so ago, I worked part-time for the guy that did the Janitorial work for Huling. It was fun to hang out in those old Showroom/Service buildings with such a rich, local history, and not be pressured into buying a car! ;-) )

johnnyblegsMemberTyping the address into the King County Parcel Viewer just produced that one photo of the red neon Buick sign. I would follow Mike’s advice and contact the family if you’re looking for more than that.

miwsParticipantGood call on Parcel Viewer, Johnny!
Having pics on the site is so relatively new, that didn’t even cross my mind.
Gonna go take a peek now!

miwsParticipantI also just checked the UW Image Library, and Seattle Municipal Photo Archive, (both great places to lose oneself for hours looking through old, local photos!), but no luck.
After I first saw this thread, I Google imaged “Huling Bros”, and several placeholders came up, but would have taken forever to load on my dial-up, so I don’t know if there’s anything there that would work out.
No luck at History Link either.

KevinParticipantYou might want to take a look at the book “Westside Story” which was originally published back around the 1970’s. It is a coffee table sized book that is full of area history, pictures, and includes advertisements from many local businesses.
There are probably many copies still floating around. I know that John’s Alki Style Barber Shop on California has a well read copy in his waiting area.

SueParticipantBrian, you might want to also check the new book West Seattle (Images of America Series). I haven’t seen the book yet, but could have some photos (or the authors might have photos they didn’t use): http://www.amazon.com/West-Seattle-Images-America/dp/073858133X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1288972335&sr=8-1

miwsParticipantYes! Duh! *slaps forehead*. Westside Story!
They have a then current (1987) ad of Huling’s on page 193, which has an image of Huling Buick from 1956.
The book is also available at the West Seattle Library, (Admiral Branch), although I believe it’s for in Library use only. Not sure if the other Westside Libraries (Delridge, Highpoint, Southwest) have copies as well.
