csw2119ParticipantI am 50, female, married, spiritual, dog lover, democrat, 50lb over weight, looking for another lady or two who would like to start off on the right foot this Jan. I am going to take a spiritual approach to weight loss, focusing on what I want, making a committment to reach a healthier weight this year. If we do it together, we will have an automatic support system, and have a better chance at success. I like to walk, play tennis, used to salsa dance. Drop me a line, let’s get started and set our goals. Morgan Juntion

i’m guessing you aren’t a 50+ female with a weight problem.
i’m also guessing you won’t know how condescending you sound till you get there.
csw2119
I’m in.. tho i can’t exercise with you…
you can reach me at joanne at brayden dot org
and i bet i know a lady or two who would also be interested.
i don’t know that i am ready to drop 50 pounds… some of those pounds are busy plumping out wrinkles… but i am willing to work my way in that direction 5 pounds at a time..
December 16, 2009 at 4:50 am #684171
pigeonmomParticipantvelo_nut’s comments did come off as extremely condescending.
December 16, 2009 at 5:25 am #684172
bfranklin4206Membereat alot less and exercize more!
December 16, 2009 at 5:26 am #684173
JanSParticipantwell, then, let’s just ignore him – lol…it’s gotta be a “him” :)
December 16, 2009 at 5:57 am #684174
velo_nutParticipantWhy did that sound condescending?
December 16, 2009 at 8:10 am #684175
jellyfishMemberIf it was a truly easy thing, Velo_nut, no rational person would be overweight. However, other factors are involved, like genetics, hormones, and emotions. Some people can’t do this without a support group. I applaud the original poster.

FranciParticipantSounds good, I’ve been thinking that finding a walking partner would help me get those walks in on a more regular basis. You can reach me at fpease at gmail dot com.

velo_nutParticipantSorry Jellyfish… it’s all in your head. It’s science-
Exercise and burn more than is consumed. “Genetics, Hormones and emotions” is another way of saying “Lack of willpower and laziness”
Society needs a kick in the head and start looking at overeating like smoking.
I too applaud the OP but I’m saying, why wait?
December 16, 2009 at 4:01 pm #684178
velo_nutParticipantand JanS… I have no idea what “it’s gotta be a him” means.
December 16, 2009 at 4:08 pm #684179
LucianMemberVelo.. Try to find the willpower to stop your holier-than-thou trolling. Self restraint encompasses more than consumption.
December 16, 2009 at 4:16 pm #684180
velo_nutParticipantIt’s not trolling. You are being overly sensitive and are missing my point.
what is offensive by “eat less and exercise”?
December 16, 2009 at 4:53 pm #684181
In2theknightMemberI have re-read velo’s comments and still can’t understand how it came off as being so offensive (and seriously, what is the point of turning this into another her vs. him thing? The gender bashing thing on BOTH sides is getting old. You don’t want it done to your gender, so why do it to the other?). Last December I posted the below text on WSB and people replied that they understood and agreed with it. And what I posted is just a long version of what velo posted. So take velo’s comment as tough love.
Warning: this post is not going to be for the super sensitive at heart.
I am tired of hearing ppl say what they are GOING to do starting the 1st of the year. “I’m going to stop smoking”, “I’m going to start working out”, “I’m going to start eating better”…”on the 1st of the year.” WHY?! What is a good reason…no…excuse that ppl can’t start the journey to achieve their goals today?
The simple fact is January 1st is just another day in your life. It’s not a day that the sun’s rays will be stronger so to give you more energy to start working out. It’s not a day that you will win a million dollars as long as you stop smoking on that day alone. It’s not a day that food portions will magically become smaller so you can start losing weight. It is just 1 out of 365 days in a year.
“New Years Resolution” is nothing more than a nice, sugar coated way of saying “procrastination”. Because that’s all it is. It’s ppl knowing that they want to change something about themselves and their lives but putting it on hold until a specific day.
One random day last Sept, I don’t even know what day it was, I just decided out of the blue to get out and run on the West Seattle track. And from that day, I have kept to that almost every single day for the last 3 months. I am proud to say that I am 30 pounds lighter today because of that decision. Had I made a New Years Resolution about what I was GOING to do, I wouldn’t be able to say I lost 30 lbs until next April.
START THE JOURNEY TO YOUR GOAL TODAY. That way when you reach your goal, you will have done it 3 days ahead of schedule.
You want to start an exercise plan? Stand up, dress accordingly, and go outside NOW. You want to stop smoking? Go find the cigs in your house and throw them out NOW. You want to lose weight? The next time you have a chance to eat, make sure you are putting something healthy in your mouth and it is a small portion TODAY. Not this coming Thursday, but TODAY. If you need a support group, you reach out to your friends, family, WSB or you can PM me to be your support TODAY.
Ultimately 1/1/2009 doesn’t mean anything at all when it comes to living your life the way you want. It is nothing more than just another 24 hours.
In conclusion, don’t let my final sentence offend you. Instead, look at it as tough love/encouragment-
Either put up, or shut up…TODAY.

JoBParticipantthis was not the day to make me cranky…
for some of us, weight loss is not so simple as cranking up the stereo and hitting the gym… nor is it as simple as watching what passes the lips.
there are new studies that show that high fructose corn syrup triggers fat retention in the cells surrounding the heart.. and oh yeah. the belly. if consuming high fructose corn syrup can alter fat content, it is highly likely that some of those hormones raging through bodies can do the same…
there are names for these conditions.. and they aren’t just a rationalization for the overweight.
I don’t need tough love. I need better chemisty and a little understanding. I need someone to solve the mysterious puzzle of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome so that i can once again become the athlete my body was born to be. Even at 60.
And although our stories aren’t identical, i am not alone.
most days i try to see those who are so insensitive as to think they know more about what is happening with another person’s metabolism and health as frightened children whistling in the dark…. if it’s their fault.. it can’t happen to you.
but today.. no… i simply see those kinds of comments as insensitive at best and cruel at worst.
if you really want to encourage someone to move towards more healthy habits, you don’t blame them for their inaction.. you don’t ridicule them and call it tough love…
you belly up to the bar and realize that there but for the grace of god go you.. and you offer a little compassion…
and if you can’t bring yourself to do that.. you shut the f… up.
understood?

csw2119ParticipantHi velo nut
I don’t think you meant your comment as condescending, you are just young and probably healthy, and didn’t realize it is a challenge for many of us, men and women. When you are young, weight loss is fairly easy. As you grow older, your body changes, women have about 5-10 years of hell to go through with menopause, and weight gain is very common, among an array of other things. We all know the equation – food +exercise, the problem is, it’s not easy. We all have to eat. I hope you enjoy the hell out of your young years and I hope you are always blessed with good health. One last comment, the end of the year/begining of the new year are especially spiritual times of the year, releasing the old year, setting goals looking forward to a new year. For me, it’s just the right time to make many changes and committments. C

nuniMembervelo_nut – welcome to the most sensitive blog in the universe :)
December 16, 2009 at 8:09 pm #684185
JoBParticipantnuni…
now isn’t that a hoot?
labeling people who struggle with their weight as lacking personal willpower is simply tough love…
but exposing the lack of sensitivity or understanding of basic medical principals of those who do so is being too sensitive…
yeah… right.
December 16, 2009 at 8:16 pm #684186
nuniMemberJoB, I believe velo_nut’s original comment was directed at the OP who appears to be able bodied yet people are jumping down his/her throat for being condescending.
December 16, 2009 at 8:48 pm #684187
KBearParticipantIs this a good time to ask whether “loose weight” is any easier or harder to lose?
December 16, 2009 at 9:00 pm #684188
GenHillOneParticipantmeh, about as good a time as asking if that kitty’s human doesn’t watch its calorie-to-exercise ratio or if it has a medical issue that makes a weight control more of a challenge (or if it’s just the camera angle – DO love monorail cats, for the record); just as the OP addressed @16, it isn’t always so cut & dry
–
to those who go for it, more power to you!
December 16, 2009 at 9:38 pm #684189
velo_nutParticipantI’m 35. So not old but at the same time not young.
The wife and I are active as you could see on my website http://www.twowheelsandotherthings.com. I race for a local Seattle Cycling team and my wife raced as well. Years of cycling, running, U frisbee, hiking, swimming, golf, sailing, Snowshoeing and others has taught me a few things…
1 – Don’t waste time or money in a gym.
2 – Exercise IS fun and can be done at all times of the day
3 – Eat when you are hungry
4 – Eat GOOD FOOD
5 – Florescent lighting sucks your soul
Don’t ever con yourself into exercising. Do it because it’s fun.
JoB – Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is mainly caused by poor diet and lack of movement. HFCS reeks havoc on peoples system and is the leading cause of CFS and child obesity. It is VERY easy to cut HFCS out of ones diet. you will feel better almost immediately!!! :)
December 16, 2009 at 9:42 pm #684190
swimcatMemberI don’t think velo_nut’s orginal comment was condescending either. I also just think there is no time like the present to start something- why wait? You just get further entrenched in the old bad habits and it just makes it harder to implement a healthy change.
My only advice to those starting an exercise routine soon- please ease into it the first month!! If you see a trainer, tell them you are VERY out of shape. They always start people doing the craziest stuff, lifting weights that are too heavy that leaves them sore and unable to move. Don’t go gung-ho all at once. Make subtle changes and it will be easier to handle. Good luck! And just start NOW!
December 16, 2009 at 11:14 pm #684191
charlabobParticipantVelonut, I’m happy all your activities have taught you and “the wife” (g-d do people still say that?) a lot. I’m sorry sensitivity and tact don’t seem to be among the things you learned. I don’t think you started out to be condescending –I do think lecturing JoB on how to cure CFS was, um, not your best move ever.
December 16, 2009 at 11:28 pm #684192
velo_nutParticipant” “the wife” (g-d do people still say that?) “
You mean people used to say that? I thought I was cutting edge!
I have all the sensitivity and tact I need, thank you very much. It’s amazing how much people automatically know from reading a font on a computer screen. I’m probably one of the nicest, down to earth and kind people you would ever meet in person.
Lecture is a bit of a stretch and trust me. I have made worse moves. Then again, haven’t we all?
