HopQueenParticipantDo you know – or are you – a reasonably priced photographer in/serving the West Seattle area? We are looking for someone creative and fun to do an informal shoot when the baby arrives this fall. Would prefer someone who will share all of the images for a set price versus having to select images individually. Thanks for any recommendations!

rosewaterMemberHi HopQueen,
I am a local West Seattleite and a newborn/family photographer. I would be happy to work with you and invite you to check out my work at http://www.rosannanydia.com. My natural light style is often described as editorial and creative. I do offer a flat package that includes digital files, so let me know if you want to secure a date for a session.
Best wishes for a smooth delivery and congratulations!

SueParticipantDonna Ryan at City Mouse Studio in the Junction does a lot of child/family photography. I saw her for professional headshots which I absolutely loved, and saw samples of her family work which were very good. I don’t know her pricing for that type of work, but her pricing for the headshots was very reasonable. Her website doesn’t seem to be working properly in terms of the studio links, but here’s her contact info: http://citymousestudio.com/?page_id=59

EmmyJaneParticipantI’m wondering if City Mouse’s prices are standard for pictures? The sitting fee was what I expected, but $345 for all your pictures was a lot more than what I was expecting. I’ve never had these done so I have no concept, but given we’re about to have a newborn and I was going to get pictures I want to know what to expect!

UrbanFabulousParticipantEmmyJane, we used City Mouse for our daughter because she was on the lower end of the price scale. I found a lot of photographers who wanted far more for newborn pictures. One reason we picked Donna was that her sitting fee is low, and then you can just pick a few photos that you really like. For us it made it really affordable.
I just had my daughter’s 6 month photos taken at Picture People at the mall and it was about $125 for a CD of all the images. I can show you the pictures if you want to compare quality. I thought the woman did an excellent job for the price and can give you her name.
Rosanna, what do you charge for a shoot and CD or prints? We’re looking for family shots this October.

BrianMemberQuality – Price – Creative.
Pick 2 because you can’t have all 3. Anyone can walk up to its subject with a smart phone, a DSLR or heck, even a film in a box camera and get a “good” picture. Toss it at some software if you are halfway computer literate and futz with the color (ooooh Sepia!) maybe blur the edges and then shop a unicorn in the background to make people say awww.
.
Really. These are photos of your family. Your loved ones. If you want lifestyle artwork that will blow your mind you shell out that little extra for a professional who has the experience, equipment and the ability to learn their subjects in a few moments.
Ask yourself, do you want a picture or just an image?

HopQueenParticipantBrian, maybe you mistook “affordable” to mean cheap. I have had some beautiful, professional photos taken by people who love what they do and want it to be accessible to a spectrum of annual incomes. Unfortunately, none of those photographers are available to come to my house in October.
As much as I love my loved ones, the $500 and up price tags I’m encountering (actual photos not included) are out of reach for my budget.

rosewaterMemberHi UrbanFabulous! Thank you so much for asking. I can’t speak for any other photographer as there are many different business models out there and my work is primarily done on location (i.e. in the client’s home for a newborn session or at a nearby area for family portraits), which is reflected in the services I offer. Most of my clients do come as referrals because they are interested in my particular style and the experience of working closely with me on a collaborative project. I’m interested in learning about my clients, their interests and how to best portray their everyday life in uniquely beautiful ways.
At this time, I do offer a session package that includes digital files. My price point for this package may be higher than others, but I work hard to create a complete story for the family so that for example, you’re getting 30 photos instead of 6, which allows you to make a really nice album for your family. Newborn sessions are priced a bit higher because they generally last 2-3 hours to take feedings and breaks into account, but also to allow for time to do family portraits and special portraits of mom/dad with baby. I would encourage you to first look at my work first (or anyone else’s work first) before looking at the price point, but I completely understand how it can be hard to budget for quality photos. Our family saves each year to pay our wedding photographer who has since become our dedicated family photographer, to do an annual family photo session and it’s absolutely an investment that sometimes makes even me blush, but the high quality is truly there and I’ve never regretted spending just a little bit more for photos that I will be proud to pass down through generations.
My newborn sessions start at $400 (includes digital files) and family sessions (1 hour on location) sart at $300 (includes digital files). I say ‘start’ because additional siblings and extended family members increase the time involved so my rates adjust accordingly. I don’t advertise ‘mini’ sessions, but I am open to having that discussion if someone is on a tight budget.
I have been busy enough, that I will most likely be transitioning to a more specialized model in 2014, but at the moment I do have some availability in October.
Thanks again!

suebhounzParticipanthi,
you should check out Shelia addeleman. She has been taking photos of our kids and family since they were born and they are now teens. She is fun, reliable, and a blast to work with.
