dhgParticipantOur cousin saw about 200 kids at her door and had included Halloween-themed pencils in the mix. I was very surprised to hear that kids got excited over the option of going for the pencil instead of the candy. It seems some kids are short on school supplies and it was much appreciated. So, next year, consider adding some school items into the basket.

seaopgalParticipantWe did pencils one year, and they really went fast. This year it was the NECCO wafers … I think mostly because they looked different than the usual little candy bars in the bowl. Of course, I’m not sure they’ll actually like the NECCOs once they try them.

MercyMoiParticipantMy kid likes the pencils, molded erasers, spider rings, and glow sticks/bracelets/necklaces (which are particularly fantastic on dark trick or treat expeditions!). He’s gotten small key chains and tiny wind-ups, too. As a parent I appreciate the non-candy options – thank you for considering some. Kids know treats go beyond sugar…toys make great loot!
And as an FYI, for those who in their spirited generosity are giving away straight up sugar candy, I know we’re not the only family who throws those Starburst, Laffy Taffy, Gobstoppers, etc. right into the trash when we get home. We teach gratitude for everything, of course, and we also teach our kid to go for the chocolate-y items – the lesser evil. Poor kid has experienced enough fillings for his age.
And by the way, thank you to everyone who makes trick or treating so fun! We love getting to chat even briefly to our neighbors.

sunshineParticipantPlease don’t throw the candy away! Check out this link for several ways to give it away to a good cause.

geogirlMemberMercy our kids should make a trade. My peanut allergic son would gladly take all your sugar bombs in exchange for his chocolatey bars of death. :)

nighthawkParticipantMy kids really love the toys, pencils, stickers and such. I wish more people handed them out.

AimParticipantConsider it done! I’d be thrilled to hand out non-candy options next year. Toys, spider rings, creepy crawlies, pencils, pens, and general whatnots are on my list. Thanks for the good ideas. Those of us without kids who like to hand out goodies sometimes need a little guidance. I have NO CLUE what’s popular. :)

GinaParticipantI handed out little super balls this year. Seemed pretty popular.
