what’s with this posting thing? I noticed several posters yesterday had the same problem…their posts showed up twice. it looked as if the post didn’t send, so after a bit I sent it again. sorry…any hints or suggestions for the future (other than a bit more patience?)

Can’t make it today, JoB, but I have offered my help and you have my phone number from the Geezers brunch. Also, I have a hat from my Raging Grannies day…wide brim straw with lovely bread and roses theme around the crown…might be perfect for the auctioneer to wear, if you’re interested. I’m on and off as far as energy lately, but will help in any way I can.

Also, I loooove books too. A book exchange would be so much fun.

I’ll second that, JoB. I’m mostly a lurker, but I sure learn a lot from you’all. Special thanks to Ken for answers to several questions I did post. Sometimes I’m a little intimidated by all the brilliant back and forths…but again, I learn a lot.

JoB, try changing the zoom level on your browser window to make the font larger in the composition box. You can change it from 100% to 150% or higher. In Opera it’s top right. In IE it’s bottom right.

It is clear that Obama has captured the hearts and souls of those idealists who support him… and is equally clear that the political enemies of the Clintons are having a field day…

But it still doesn’t make the questions that Hillary raises any less pertinent. You may not like the way she raises them, but you would better support your candidate if you thought more about those questions and how you are going to answer those and more this fall and spent less time indignant that she would raise them at all.

It is easy to forget how many people started this campaign with “anbody but Clinton” … and yet, she still has a great deal of support. I don’t think it’s because she is the “underdog”.

A lot of us supported her before she was one.

We were just saving our money and effort until the real fight began. Who knew democrats would bankrupt themselves before the real fight in November.. and that so many of you would see this as a good thing?

As for Samantha Power.. i don’t find her full remarks any better than the abridged (tho i can see why you do Ken).. but i do think it was a great way to get the core message of the current Obama campaign… (Hillary is underhanded) out there one more time… and so much more convincing when she “apologized” by giving lip service to Hillary’s record.. excellent political maneuvering.

Kayleigh, you are quick to point out that political hacks know exactly what they are doing if it is something applied to Clinton.. why are you less so when attributed to Obama’s staff?

there are clearly two different standards operating here.

Ama Ama, Shadowlands and Blue Willow have been up and running for a while now… anyone have recent experiences to share from any of those spots, or some of the other newer places in WS?

Still haven’t tried Shadowlands but I’m a fan of Ama Ama, especially for their amazing happy hour deals. Blue Willow always seems to be busy but I’ve never stopped in to check it out.

I did finally try a slice of shoofly pie the other day. Wasn’t all that impressed, but I’m going to give Shoofly another shot via their coconut cream.

Bus info by line and route. Links suitable for mobile phones.

The best coverage in West seattle right now is actually AT&T/Cingular. The merger a while back created overlapping zones in much of WS and allows my phone to work in a basement of a plaster and lathe house (otherwise known as a faraday cage)when verizon users have to go out to the front yard.

Each location is going to be different, but since cingular built towers and then merged with AT&T which already had lots of towers, the coverage is better in most places I have tested. (poking around in cell phone software can tell ya some esotheric and interesting things about signal strength and inrange towers.)

However, the concentration of users on the afternoon West Seattle Bridge will often overwhelm the towers between Pigeon Point/Delridge way and the Alaska Junction.

    She apologized.

When is the Clinton campaign going to apologize for the “sinister” nonsense, for the 3am ad, for Clinton’s praise of McCain, for essentially betraying the party with her own ambition?

Hillary as victim? Please. Though she held some of my sympathy once, she’s far more perpetrator than victim now.

    from the wikipedia link above

In a March 6 interview with The Scotsman, she was quoted as saying: “We f***ed up in Ohio. In Ohio, they are obsessed and Hillary is going to town on it, because she knows Ohio’s the only place they can win”.[11] [12] “She is a monster, too — that is off the record — she is stooping to anything…You just look at her and think, ‘Ergh.’ But if you are poor and she is telling you some story about how Obama is going to take your job away, maybe it will be more effective. The amount of deceit she has put forward is really unattractive.” Power apologized for the remarks that night, saying that they “do not reflect my feelings about Sen. Clinton, whose leadership and public service I have long admired.”[13] In the wake of reaction to the remarks, she resigned from the campaign the next day. [14]

my apology for the double post..

i have trouble editing in the small composition box so i always read it in the blue (easy for me to see) box and edit.

generally, the first post is replaced.. but it didn’t happen that way this time.

a writer can never resist editing… but inflicting essentially the same post twice is unnecessary… and unintentional. sorry:(

    This is a RAVE..

for all those people who stick their necks out day after day to say what’s on their mind and to stick up for what they believe in.

Who take the time to inform (Ken and JanS have been especially good about linking us to original info), enlighten and entertain us.

And even to those who challenge us… as long as they don’t cross the line into name calling and slurs… (a little bit of humor goes a long way towards making opposing ideas palatable).

    It’s working.

theHOuse admits he read through 90(?) pro.. and not so pro democratic posts in the Hillary conversation to catch up before throwing his republican bomb:) I don’t know that i would have had the patience to hear everyone out that way had they been republicans:)

We have become proactive… with one person voicing a concern, another posting where to find resources.. and perhaps still another following through to form action that starts the wheels of change turning.

We have formed a community of members who actually want to meet one another.. a community where sometimes bitter opponents can come together on common projects.

We have become interesting.. for every person who becomes a member and posts, it is estimated 9 more simply make our posts part of their day. Ken hints that we might even have the ear of the ear of our super delegates:) how cool is that.

I think this may be a fairly unique experiment in community building.

I am honored to be part of it.

    ok then…

    the video first.

I know filmmakers and digital artists. The conversion to you tube or flash formats can darken and stretch video without any conscious decision at all. You tube is also experimenting with its own conversion to higher resolution video format conversion for some of their older content.

That said, attack ads and tv ads for major campaigns are not usually put together by amateurs. Every angle and frame is designed to include all the unconscious cues (tint, hue, music (including sub sonics) viewers are known to respond to.

The data is therefore inconclusive as to if the intent of the ad was either more or less sinister than the subjective interpretation of viewers in either camp. Of course, objective analysis that supports either side is going to be rejected out of hand by the other. This is the joys of primary season and I hope you all remember how ugly it is by the time it comes round again.

The “unpaid staffer” for Obama was not just any pr flack. She is one of the most respected writers and journalists and professors on the planet.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samantha_Power

Her Pulitzer prize winning book is unique, powerful and disturbing.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Problem_from_Hell:_America_and_the_Age_of_Genocide

She also supported and endorsed General Clark in 04.

I have read and followed her writings, speeches, debates and interviews for many years.

While the ” off the record” request was technically “too late”, most reputable journalists would have honored it.

I happen to agree with the remark in context, but perhaps I don’t view it in the same frame as some.

All politicians are monsters in some ways. No normal person can get through life with the bullet proof ever expanding ego required to run for president, without several hundred or thousand others getting stepped on. Even local politicians have to be pretty well immune to criticism to survive re-election rhetoric around here.

An objective observer who viewed the primary as a contest with fungible rules, would not see anything wrong with the hardball tactics used, and whether it worked or not would be the only criteria used to evaluate it.

However, most of us Dems are not the objective Machiavelli’s who think “The Prince” and “1984” are instruction manuals for world domination.

Our current objective is to throw those bums out and intall our own :)

The House.. Kayleigh missed a big one.. so i will take it up…

Democrats don’t want rich folks to pay more for taxes than they do.. they just want rich folks to pay the same percentage of their income that those who are less fortunate do…

you make less.. you can afford less. you make more.. you can afford more.

That would actually stimulate our economy (according to current Bush principals) because the rich aren’t likely to spend more if they have more in their pockets (you can only spend so much) but the poor are likely to spend it if it lands in their pockets….

so how about (instead of making the rich pay a larger percentage of their income) .. we actually calculate what the rich do pay and charge the rest of us poor suckers the same. We’d spend it!

    Great economic stimulation package!

The trouble with letting insurance company MBA types effectively practice medicine is that a “pre-existing condition” can be a nebulous thing, not scientifically defined.

I had eczema when I was 9 years old. I haven’t had an iota of it in 25 years. If I get it tomorrow, is it a “pre-exisitng condition”? I would tell my dermatologist that I had it as a child, because this fact might help in diagnosis and treatment. If my insurance company were to deny treatment and I could not afford to pay for it (some derm medicines run hundreds of dollars a month), how is any greater good served?

I would now have a painful, uncomfortable, possibly disfiguring condition that might inhibit my ability to be promoted or even *get* work. The open untreated skin might make me at higher risk for a secondary infection (more $ to treat that, right?)

(for the record, I have no eczema at all; this is hypothetical.)

Many conditions and diseases wax and wane, and we should have the right to get treatment at whatever phase they happen to be in. That’s the risk the insurance company takes.

    The House…

“play by the rules of the game”

You may be currently correct if your undisclosed preexisting condition is a diagnosed medical condition… not disclosing that is not “playing by the rules of the game” …of course you won’t get medical care either… but that’s another conversation.

however, your insurance company doesn’t play by the rules of the game… insurance companies are now bumping patients and denying care on suspicion of preexisting symptoms … even those the insured may not have been aware of.

This has even been the case with a woman i know who went to her doctor for symptoms on her previous insurance and was told that she was perfectly fine… she just needed to “get out more” and then was denied coverage by a subsequent insurer based on an “undisclosed” medical condition. One she clearly wasn’t aware she had.

And heaven forbid you actually get genetic testing for the “tendency” to inherit some illness.. like women who want to know if they have the breast cancer gene so they can be proactive about their health.

This is why the law needs to be changed so that insurance companies can’t deny you coverage based on either psychological conditions or preexisting conditions.

Those with preexisting conditions aren’t what’s driving health care costs. We pay more and get less than any other developed country in the world…. when you eat up 3o+% of every health care dollar in administrative costs… that sort of drives costs… and that figure doesn’t even mention the profits generated in every one of the administrative centers your health care dollar passes through…

we die earlier.. our outcome measures (life) for most treatable catastrophic and chronic illnesses are worse… and our babies die at an alarming rate.

    Who is getting cheated here?

No, it is not different. Your insurance company asks you up front to disclose all of your conditions. They have a right to charge you more or not cover you if they chose. If you choose not to disclose, you are the one in the wrong not the insurance company.

Play by the rules of the game.

House, it’s different than taking a sledgehammer to a vehicle. That’s actually insurance fraud and voids your policy.

People can’t necessarily control whether they have a pre-existing condition. We pay (or our employers pay) insurance companies to take care of illnesses. Period. Which is why I think we need a single-payer national government run health plan. But that’s a whole ‘nother thing.

House, you are correct on the second two, but not on the first two. (at least in terms of my beliefs and those of most Democrats I know.)

The group isn’t more important than the individual, but rather that the individual has some level of responsibility toward the group. None of us is an island; we have responsibilities toward one another. This is actually a pretty Christian belief–one even many conservative Christian churches embrace. It’s just that conservatives are under the mistaken belief that private non-government efforts can solve the problems—they don’t they and never will be enough.

The second one: it isn’t correct that government has a responsibility to sustain you. Rather, that government can (and should) provide a safety net. That’s all…a safety net, not a way of life. The universe creates its own random inequalities and capitalism creates even more; a humane society demands a safety net to help people though hard times.

The government has tremendous power and it actually does some things pretty well (NASA, the public libraries, the CDC, Medicare). It’s imperfect, but unlike corporations, government answers to *us* rather than its stockholders. So it’s often the better choice to perform certain functions (like healthcare) that should not be solely determined by striving for a profit margin.

There are things that transcend money and this is a moral belief most Democrats I know have. We believe it as strongly as the Republicans believe in their concepts of morality.

g-d house, you are pathetic! i could explain to you the concept of the public common, but you are clearly too retarded to understand anything that sophisticated. so-phis-ti-cated–look it up.

And, to anyone tempted to flame me, I do not throw the term “retarded” around lightly — it goes toward those who use it–or, as they say in the vernacular (look it up, house) — it takes one to know one.

For very very basic service, one other decent option is Virgin Mobile pay as you go. You can order the bottom-line phone, the Oystr (no camera), online basically for free (you pay $20 but you get $20 prepaid airtime). Then you can “top up” online. We did this for our business phone when we first set it up late last summer after “pledge day” made that possible; we kept it that way till we ported the number to Verizon just a few weeks ago because finally we were using the phone enough that the pay-as-you-go pricing was adding up to more than a semi-basic cell plan (now we have a family share on Verizon for the home and business numbers, both now mobile phones). If you have friends with different carriers, you might have them come over and check the signal strength at your house. Because of West Seattle’s unique topography, some carriers do better in some spots than others. Just so happens that Verizon does better at our house.

Please understand how much I wanted to throw up after reading 92 post about Clinton and Obama. I somehow battled through it.

As the famous Internet quote goes, watching these two nitwits duke it out for the Democratic ticket is like watching the Special Olympics….it doesn’t matter who wins, they’re still retarded.

I would like to point out to Kayleigh in response to her comment about Republicans not understanding what Democrats stand for. I will attempt to summarize.

Here are just a sample of what Democrats believe:

    1) That the the “group” is more important than the “individual”.

    2) It is governments responsibility to sustain its citizens (this could include food, housing, employment, medical needs, etc).

    3) Individuals that are wealthy should pay a higher tax rate for the greater good.

    4) The United States should maintain it’s political positions (Freedon and Democracy) through peace. The military is necessary, but if and only after the opposition has cast the first stone.

Tell me I’m wrong on any of the statements above…
