West Seattle, Washington
01 Friday
Quick updates on tonight’s West Seattle High School basketball playoff games:
GIRLS WIN: The Wildcat women beat Holy Names 53-39 at Nathan Hale, per the update just in from Seattle Times (WSB partner) sports reporter Sandy Ringer. The game was close until the fourth quarter, when, she reports, Holy Names failed to score. Photographer Steph Brusig was at the game for WSB and we’ll have another report later with photos. (Update: Here’s that link.)
BOYS LOSE BUT STILL IN IT: Earlier, the WSHS boys lost to Lakeside, 68-50, but they are still in it, with a game at 5:45 pm tomorrow vs. Bainbridge, loser out, winner to districts. That game will be played at Garfield HS.

Here’s a chance to see the Mariners this year while giving a boost to local high-school athletes! From Caryn Johnson:
The West Seattle Boosters are supporting a fundraising event for the West Seattle High School baseball team. The team is selling tickets for $12/each to an upcoming Seattle Mariners baseball game (Mon, June 22 vs. the Kansas City Royals at 7:10) to raise money for the team as well as to qualify to play at the annual High School Baseball Classic at Safeco Field in the spring of 2016.
If you would like to support the West Seattle High School Baseball team please e-mail wshsmarinerstickets@gmail.com. Someone will be in contact with you on how to purchase tickets. The fundraiser is due to end at the end of April, so purchase your tickets now. Last year the team was able to sell enough tickets during the same fundraiser to qualify to play at Safeco Field this spring. West Seattle High School will be playing Sedro Woolley on Saturday, March 28th at 12:30. Admission to this event is FREE!
We look forward to a great season this spring and will keep everyone posted on game dates, times and locations. Thank you for your support. Go, Wildcats!
The high-school-basketball postseason is on. Chief Sealth International High School‘s boys-varsity team played a loser-out game against Ingraham tonight – a team they had handily defeated in the regular season, and beat again tonight, 74-49. L.J. Burns led Sealth scoring with 18 points, followed by Hafid Yassin with 15. Tomorrow night, coach Colin Slingsby‘s Seahawk boys play at Lakeside, 7 pm.
The big local sports story over the weekend was the West Seattle High School girls-varsity basketball team ending the regular season with a perfect record in their conference and head coach Sonya Elliott being named Metro League coach of the year for the second time in three years (WSB coverage here). Coach Elliott says their first playoff game is Wednesday night (February 11), 7:30 pm at Nathan Hale HS, against the winner of tonight’s Holy Names/Ballard game. P.S. Our partners at The Seattle Times have published the full Metro brackets for girls and boys.
ADDED: The Times’ latest rankings have WSHS at #2 statewide for girls’ 3A.
Thanks to Lynn Ogdon-Perrine for sharing news of Chief Sealth International High School‘s boys-wrestling results at the Metro League tournament, plus word of CSIHS hosting a big subregional tournament next Saturday:
Results from boys’s Metros are in. The following boys will be representing Sealth at Sub-Regionals on 2/14 :

CSIHS is at 2600 SW Thistle.
The West Seattle High School boys’ varsity basketball team is looking ahead to a postseason game against O’Dea next Tuesday, they announced the day after a hard-fought loss to Franklin.

(WSB photos/video by Tracy Record)
Standing at right above, that’s West Seattle High School girls-varsity head coach Sonya Elliott, who has been honored as Metro League Coach of the Year for the second time in three years, according to the school’s announcement on Twitter. Another tweet says junior Lydia Giomi has been named league MVP. Our top photo is from right after the team ended the first stage of a stellar season with a 62-20 victory last night over the visiting Franklin Quakers. In case you haven’t seen the Wildcat women play yet this year, here’s a minute we caught on video:
As the final home game of the regular season, last night was also Senior Night:

An especially poignant Senior Night for Coach Elliott, whose departing senior mainstays include her daughter Charli Elliott:

Also honored, Emily Fiso …

Annalisa Ursino …

Rachel Devore …

And Kristine La:

On to the game.

Fiso scored the first five points and finished as the scoring leader with 18.

Lexi Ioane was next with 15.

P.S. The cheer squad’s seniors were honored too – including the new Miss Seattle, Taryn Smith, who sang the national anthem before each game:

We’re now waiting to hear when/where the girls will start postseason play.

Another local youth-sports league has just opened up signups for its next season: West Seattle Soccer Club. WSSC’s Tim McMonigle tells WSB that spring soccer registration will continue all month long – but if you’re not signed up by month’s end, it’ll be “space-available basis” only, so the sooner you sign up, the better. Find info/links here.
The West Seattle Racquetball Association is looking for a place to play. Commissioner Ben Weagraff explains,
“We are a group that started with a handful of racquetball players and now have nearly 60 members. We play two tournaments a year at the YMCA (one for singles and one for doubles) plus many times a week and every weekend. We represent all levels of play and a cross-section of the diverse community that is West Seattle.” They’ve known for a while that the Y (WSB sponsor) is dropping racquetball (as mentioned here) as part of its renovation. Weagraff says they had planned to move to the under-construction LA Fitness but have been told it won’t have racquetball courts after all. So, he says, “While this is not a crisis of epic proportions, our group is wondering if there are other options on the Peninsula for us to play racquetball — it truly is a great and empowering, albeit under-appreciated, sport.” Suggestions, anyone?
More local fans! Starting with the ultimate pre-game rally, in Upper Alki:

Thanks to Barb for inviting us to her neighborhood, where members of the Seahawks’ drumline Blue Thunder played for a pregame rally a short time ago!
Yes, part of the group did go to Arizona. But others who stayed home had a few gigs like this one.

As for the neighbors – it’s not every Super Bowl Sunday you get to make some great memories BEFORE the game.

Elsewhere in West Seattle:
From the inbox, two more sets of young fans – from Manuela:

From Deborah:

Now, a case of fan creativity: Ian sent “a photo of West Seattle’s own Michelle Heck‘s snackadium. Note the iPhone jumbotron!”

And we just found this on Instagram – @Webcami’s photo from Alki:
Go, Hawks!

Oh so close to game time! Two more scenes of spirit – above, Lynn Hall spotted Seattle Fire crews in a photo-op moment at Don Armeni late this morning; below, another stunning view-above-the-clouds from Gatewood photographer/pilot Long Bach Nguyen:

editor@westseattleblog.com if you have something to share!
Big snack spread planned for The Big Game? In honor of that abundance, here’s something more you can do in the next few hours: Score a touchdown against hunger by contributing to one or both of two local churches’ Super Bowl-linked food drives. Before 1 pm or so, take a nonperishable item or two or three or … to Tibbetts United Methodist Church (3940 41st SW; WSB sponsor; backstory here) and/or Peace Lutheran Church (39th/Thistle; backstory here).
P.S. The food drives are part of our West Seattle Super Bowl Spirit list – see it in full here.

They’re on the run again for a Super Bowl Sunday tradition – the West Seattle Fat Ass 25K/50K, billed as “a no-fee, no-shirt, no-aid, no-whining type event,” the most hard-core fun run of the year. It’s also “no roads closed,” so you’ll see the ~200 runners – including the group who sent the photo – along sidewalks and paths in the next few hours, one round-trip to/from Lincoln Park for the 25K, two for the 50K, scheduled to have started around 8 am.

Game Day is just hours away, and Seahawks spirit is everywhere. The Friday night fog couldn’t even stop it, as Craig Young‘s photo above shows – and the photo Mike Russell tweeted:
Sunset #fog from #WestSeattle was cool, but nighttime fog, well… #Seattle @space_needle @westseattleblog pic.twitter.com/CIeEKuazwC
— Mike Russell (@mikerussellfoto) January 31, 2015
This next photo was sent earlier today by the West Seattle Trader Joe’s crew:

And James shared this image of two young 12s in his household:

(added) Spirit at Denny International Middle School – assistant principal Patricia Rangel tweeted photos with the Lunch Ladies:

Anything to add? editor@westseattleblog.com – meantime, here’s our list of notes, including where to watch. It’s not all-inclusive, so be aware that if you try to go anywhere after about 2:30 pm tomorrow, particularly restaurants that you wouldn’t expect to have the game on, you just might find them closed. It is a bit of a holiday, after all.
At West Seattle High School on Friday night, the Wildcats played host to the Bulldogs. First, the girls-varsity team with yet another win:

(WSB photos by Patrick Sand)
That’s junior Lexi Ioane, who led with 18 points and 10 rebounds in WSHS’s 55-39 win over Garfield. Senior Emily Fiso was next with 15 points:

Junior Gabby Sarver, who led in assists with 6, was third in scoring, at 8 points:

In the nightcap, the boys-varsity team lost to Garfield, 82-58. Sophomore Nate Pryor topped the Wildcats’ scoring with 20:

Senior Andre Moore was next with 18:

The regular season wraps up with home games next Friday against Franklin – girls varsity at 6:30, boys at 8.
P.S. A “Blue Friday” sighting among the band:

Another busy Friday night of home games around the peninsula. First, at Chief Sealth International High School:

We caught up with the cheer squad for the first time in a while. They rallied the crowd through a nailbiter in the nightcap, as the Sealth boys-varsity team beat Roosevelt, coming back for a 54-51 victory, after being down 29-22 at halftime. Top scorer: Senior Ahmed Mohamed with 14, followed by Alloney Burris, also a senior, with 12.
Earlier, in the girls-varsity game:

That’s junior Allison Hadaway, who led scoring with 18 points, half the Seahawks’ total as they fell to the Rough Riders, 56-36.
The regular season ends next Friday night with Sealth hosting Eastside Catholic – girls varsity at 6:30, boys at 8.

The actual raising of the 1,500-square-foot “12” flag at Delridge/Andover was only one of the attractions during today’s midday rally, second year in a row, co-presented by two companies with their corporate headquarters in West Seattle’s biggest office building, Metropolitan Market (WSB sponsor) and Bartell Drugs. The crowd yielded sights such as the 12th Dude:

The 12th Buzzcut:

And of course, many variations of Skittles:

The flag made its debut last year, just before the Seahawks’ first Super Bowl win. Here’s hoping it’s a 1,500-square-foot good-luck charm helping them “Re-Pete.”

The West Seattle High School girls-varsity basketball continues to be one of the top teams in the state, 14-2 after winning again last night, though head varsity coach Sonya Elliott reports it was close:
We beat Bishop Blanchet 51-48. It was a battle. We were up by 3 going into the half and then came out of the locker room blazing, ending third quarter up by 11. Blanchet fought back in the fourth and we pulled off the 51-48 victory. Scoring: Lydia Giomi 13, Lexi Ioane 10, Emily Fiso 10, Charli Elliott 9, Gabby Sarver 9. We play Garfield at West Seattle High School this Friday, January 30th, in a Quad game with the boys:

Last year, just before the Seahawks’ first Super Bowl win, the giant 12 flag made its debut at Delridge/Andover [map], in a rally hosted by Metropolitan Market (WSB sponsor) and Bartell Drugs, whose corporate HQs are in the building. This year, they’ve just invited you to help them rally again, 11 am-1 pm this Friday (January 30th), raising the 1,500-square-foot flag at 12:12 pm (of course!). Along with cheering the flag and showing off your own 12thness, the announcement says rallygoers will find product sampling from both companies as well as cheer card/poster giveaways and more. See you there!

Ballard visited West Seattle High School on Friday night:

The Wildcat girls’ sizzling season (13-2) continued with another win, 57-33. Leading scorer (top photo), Emily Fiso with 16. Lydia Giomi was next with 12, then 10 from Izzy Turk (updated photo below):

Lexi Ioane had to sit out the second half with an iced ankle after a pileup toward the end of the first half, but head coach Sonya Elliott expects she’ll be OK for next week.
The WSHS boys-varsity team closed out the night with a victory, too – 47-35:

Another huge night (noted here) for the Wildcats’ Nate Pryor:

Head coach Keffrey Fazio‘s varsity team is now at 9-7 on the year.
For their first games next week, the Wildcat varsity teams will be at Bishop Blanchet – 7:30 pm Tuesday for the boys, 7:30 pm Wednesday for the girls.
West Seattle’s two biggest high schools had full slates of basketball home games Friday night. At Chief Sealth International High School, the Seahawks hosted Lakeside. First, the girls-varsity game:

Lakeside went away with the win 78-46, over head coach Katie Jo Maris‘s Seahawks:

Allison Hadaway and Sydney Thomas had 12 points each as top Sealth scorers.
In the nightcap, the Sealth boys stayed close for the first quarter and then Lakeside started to widen the gap.

(At right, Sealth’s Khaleef Griffin)
Final score, Lakeside 74, Sealth 57, for head coach Colin Slingsby and the boys’ squad. LJ Burns led Sealth scoring with 14. They play at Ingraham on Tuesday night, 7:30 pm; the girls will be at the same school, same time, on Wednesday night.
