2 years after Hurricane Katrina, its survivors are still struggling. In about a week, right here in WS, you’ve got two ways to help: The Total Experience Gospel Choir is leading a benefit at Kenyon Hall on 7/8, and advertising right now for more musicians to join in. If you can’t help with that, at least mark your calendar to drop by and chip in — there’ll be good food as well as good music — 1-9 pm a week from Sunday.

Jake Nickels faces a judge, as his lawyer confirms he’s indeed living at the family home here in WS, and therefore should be allowed to drink while awaiting trial (?); the judge is reported to have disagreed. (Perhaps he’d seen the motto on this cached version of the defendant’s MySpace.)

TUESDAY: One last event in memory/honor/celebration of popular WS waiter John Hartley (photo at right), who died suddenly last month — John Hartley Memorial Karaoke @ Skylark, 9 pm-1 am. Free; donations will be accepted to help his roommate stay in the house they rented together; singers will be encouraged to share stories and memories.

West Seattle-based naturalist Stewart Wechsler is featured in a Times article today about a plant restoration project at Seward Park. He also does naturalist work at other city parks including Camp Long here in WS. We first met Stewart while chaperoning a school field trip at Camp Long some time back; when it comes to the troubled state of our natural world, he is truly one of the people who, to paraphrase the saying, lights a candle rather than cursing the darkness.

A commenter on this post asked if anyone had a photo of John Hartley (popular local waiter who died suddenly last week) to share; Jessie from Skylark kindly sent the one you see below. Just too good a photo to cut down to a head shot. Jessie also says that, while the date is not yet set — it’ll be sometime in mid-June — there will definitely be an official benefit, featuring at least six bands, to raise money for John’s family. Meantime, reminder that the service for John is 10 am this Saturday @ Burien Free Methodist Church.Ã‚Â (And the official obituary has just appeared @ NWsource.com.)

But two more things to note: #1, the location of Saturday’s service has been clarified, as Burien Free Methodist Church; #2, one of the anticipated fundraisers for his family is detailed here (update: this is an unofficial individual gesture by that performer and doesn’t necessarily apply to anyone else on the bill that night).

Many people have dropped by here to read and/or post about John Hartley, the popular JaK’s and Skylark waiter who died suddenly last week, at a ridiculously young age. Tonight we have word from Jessie @ Skylark that services for John are set for a week from today (Saturday, May 19), 10 am at Burien Methodist Church. (Jessie also notes that Skylark will not open till 3 pm that day.)

Two weeks after we lost another true WS original, it’s time for the final tributes. Visitation for former city councilmember Charlie Chong is 4-7 pm tonight and 4-6 pm tomorrow night at Howden-Kennedy; vigil service is 7 pm tomorrow and funeral Mass at noon Saturday, both at Holy Rosary. According to CharlieChong.com, everybody’s welcome; the site also has information on where to make donations in Charlie’s memory.
