BIZNOTE & TRAFFIC ALERT: Repairs planned for sewer-line collapse that has temporarily closed Poggie Tavern

(WSB file photo)

Poggie Tavern proprietor Joel Stedman says he and the staff are extra-bummed the tavern can’t be open this holiday week to share holiday cheer and festive decorations. The Poggie’s been closed since a sewer-line problem was discovered this past weekend, and it’s turned out to be bigger than suspected – after consulting with multiple plumbers, they learned that a line had apparently collapsed. It’s part of their building, the city has told them, not part of the public infrastructure, but it stretches out into the street, so when repairs start first thing tomorrow morning, they expect a lane closure out front (if you haven’t been to The Poggie, it’s on the west side of the 4700 block of California SW). Stedman says they’re hoping it can be fixed by the weekend but could take more than a week – especially with the holiday – so they’re not sure how soon they’ll be able to reopen, but he’s confident that things will “be all right” before long. He says other owners of local establishments in old buildings have been offering commiseration and advice, and he’s really appreciative of that. Anything else the community can do? we asked. One suggestion: Patronize their sibling establishment, Larry’s Tavern (3405 California SW), which Stedman and wife Margo Beaver opened more than a year before taking over The Poggie in early 2020.

TRAFFIC CAMS, WEATHER, TRANSIT: Thursday watch; 99 tunnel reopens after power-outage closure; update: why it happened

8:00 AM: The 99 tunnel is closed both ways because of a power outage.

8:20 AM: WSDOT has no estimate for reopening.

9:09 AM: Don’t even try to head toward downtown (unless it’s by bike or Water Taxi). One reader tried and finally gave up after little progress: “All roads leading in are at a standstill.”

9:23 AM: We haven’t heard a cause for the outage but for the record, here’s its footprint, from the City Light outage map, where it’s listed as 167 customers despite the outage zone’s extensive sprawl:

9:49 AM: Note that 99 access is closed far before the tunnel – for example, the ramp from the eastbound, West Seattle Bridge, and also to the south, SDOT just tweeted: “NB SR 99 is closed north of S Idaho St. All vehicles must exit at S Spokane St.” The main problem for the tunnel, per an AlertSeattle message, is that the outage is affecting its ventilation.

9:56 AM: City Light map shows most of the outage has just been resolved. We’re watching to see how soon the tunnel will reopen and will continue updating here until resolved.

10:30 AM: Still closed.

10:47 AM: WSDOT has just announced that the tunnel has reopened.

11:51 AM: We are following up on some questions raised by this. For the simple one – what caused the outage – SCL spokesperson Jenn Strang says it was “a wire that came down at 4th S and S Hanford this morning.”

1:05 PM: We also asked WSDOT about why the tunnel didn’t have backup systems. Spokesperson RB McKeon said, “There is redundancy in the system and we would normally receive power from the north end. That switch gear has failed and although our emergency generators kicked on, they are not designed to run the ventilation and some of the other systems.” McKeon added that “… we are also in touch with the manufacturer of our switch gear and have asked them for an assessment and recommendations. We are not aware of any other occasion where this has occurred.”

Earlier:

6:03 AM: Good morning! It’s Thursday, November 20, 2025.

WEATHER + SUNRISE/SUNSET

The forecast for today: Chance of more rain, then cloudy, eventually clearing, high in the low 50s. Sunrise will be at 7:22 am; sunset will be at 4:27 pm.

UPDATE: Police investigating hit-run on Alki, child injured

3:08 PM: Police are closing Alki Avenue between 61st and 62nd after a hit-run crash that is reported to have injured a 2-year-old child. The victim is reported to be ‘awake and alert’ so the initially large SFD response is being reduced. Police are looking for a gray Toyota RAV-4 with a dent on the passenger side, plate possibly starting with CDX.

(Added: Photo by Cami MacNamara)

3:27 PM: Police just told dispatch that they’re reopening Alki Avenue. Medics were taking the child to a hospital; we’ll be following up with SFD for an update.

4:25 PM: SFD tells us the victim was a 5-year-old boy who was in stable condition when taken to Harborview Medical Center. We’ll follow up with SPD to find out whether they found/find the driver.

1st Avenue South Bridge:

Delridge cameras: In addition to the one below (Delridge/Genesee), cameras are also at Delridge/Juneau, Delridge/Henderson, Delridge/Oregon, and video-only (so you have to go to the map), Delridge/Holden and Delridge/Thistle.

MORE TRAFFIC CAMS: All functioning traffic cams citywide are here (including links to live video for most); for a quick scan of West Seattle and vicinity-relevant cameras, see this WSB page.

See a problem on the bridges/streets/paths/water? Please text or call our hotline (when you can do it safely, and after you’ve reported to authorities if they’re not already on scene) – 206-293-6302. Thank you!

UPDATE: Bus breakdown on Admiral offramp from West Seattle Bridge

5:49 PM: Thanks for the tips, even before we heard the dispatch – a Metro bus is reported to be broken down and blocking the Admiral Way offramp from the westbound West Seattle Bridge.

6:56 PM: Commenter reports it’s cleared.

UPDATE: Crash at 29th/Trenton

10:34 AM: Thanks to David for the photo. A three-vehicle crash at 29th SW and SW Trenton, west of Westwood Village, means you’ll want to avoid that area for a while. No major injuries reported but we’ll follow up with SFD, which did send an engine but cleared it relatively quickly.

11:15 AM: Police just told dispatch the intersection is temporarily closed in all directions for cleanup/tow.

11:32 AM: And they’ve just updated to say it’s all clear, open all ways.

12:22 PM: SFD tells us they treated a 58-year-old woman at the scene, not life-threatening injuries.
