More West Seattle barbecue: Brickyard BBQ coming to Admiral

Five months after OK Corral opened in the Triangle area, it’s about to get competition in the West Seattle barbecue business: Brickyard BBQ is coming to 2310 California SW (map), just north of Admiral Pub. West Seattleite Don Kriley says he and brother Dan are hoping to open the restaurant June 1st. It’ll be take-out and sit-down, Don tells WSB; they’re planning to build a seating area to facilitate the latter. He says this will be their first venture in the restaurant business. Side note: After talking briefly to Dan, we realized why the address (which we first noticed while perusing liquor-license applications) looked so familiar: A development proposed for that address has been in the works for a while and even went through Design Review in 2006-2007. We’ll be checking into its status separately.

Looking forward to trying the new place. I could swear though that many, MANY years ago someone used to barbecue on that lot – set up a big half drum and smoke out the neighborhood – anyone else remember that?

There was a BBQ joint just “South” of the Admiral pub about 8 years ago.

Just north is the “young-**ore” – and then Blockbuster.

I remember the 1/2 drum bbq – doesn’t seem like all that long ago…maybe 10 years?

The meatball sandwich place used to be there. I know that people have talked about in on the blog in the past, the sign was up for a long time after it closed.

Gina, that’s exactly what Don Kriley said – there used to be a small sandwich shop there. I was having trouble placing it, myself … but now that you mention it … I found it in the comments on this December 2007 item. Abe’s Place.

I’m having trouble posting comments, so apologies if this shows up multiple times

Any word on what kind of BBQ this is going to be? KC? Carolina? Texas? Memphis?

A new BBQ spot in WS makes me happy :)

Not in West Seattle, but Famous Dave’s in Southcenter is AWESOME BBQ. I was leary because they are a chain, but they are worth the short drive.

Isn’t that the spot where Lady Di Pet Chapperone was before they moved?

Anything to compete with (less than) OK Corral. I’ve given Otis and his shack (Greenwood AND W. Seattle) a number of opportunities to show me my previous meal was an anomaly. I am willing to give BBQ shacks way more chances than most restaurants, as they are by definition, a somewhat more loosely run type of restaurant where quality will sometimes vary significantly. The last straw was when I showed up at 6:30 on a Tuesday night and was given, with no discount or apology, the last bits of rib meat left in the pan. The thin, watery sauce did nothing to support the flavorless strands of ropey rib meat. The sides were over-salted and uninspired, as they had been previously. I am happy for Otis that he has found enough suckers to support him despite his mediocre (at best) product, but please people, inform your palate and reward the better BBQ shacks in the area such as R&L, Jones, Smokin’ Pete’s, King’s (Chinese BBQ), Cedar River Smokehouse, Pecos Pit, Pig Iron just to name a few who deserve more business than Otis.

I have no personal vendetta against Otis, but I am offended by mediocre BBQ and those who reward the producers of same.

Ole’ Ole’ I agree. Bar-B-Q is simple food, cheap cuts of meat and when prepared well, Heavenly. There is no excuse to overcharge for good simple food. Especially if it isn’t prepared well! I know by personal experience. Looking forward to Brickyard.

Sorry, comment time is over.
