Update: West Seattle Stadium lights left on overnight, and beyond

9:30 AM: The big, bright lights at West Seattle Stadium have been on all night, since last night’s Seattle PrepBainbridge football game, neighbors say, shining right onto nearby apartments, including the one inhabited by Gordon, who wrote, “We’ve been up most the night, plus I can’t imagine the energy this is wasting.” We don’t know if this was intentional, accidental, or the result of a malfunction, but the WSB’ers who reported it say they tried to call Seattle Parks – and no response yet. We don’t have after-hours numbers, but are trying several channels, after going by the stadium to check it out firsthand (our photo was taken a short time ago – 9:18 am). Our photographer did find a Parks employee at the stadium who said he didn’t know why they were on nor how to turn them off, but would make some calls.

9:09 PM: Almost twelve hours later, they’re still on – we took this photo a short time ago:

One commenter notes they’re usually on a timer, so wonders if it was a malfunction, rather than a mistake. And someone who refereed last night’s game says they were off when he left the stadium.

11:59 PM UPDATE: Went by again ten minutes ago – the lights are now off.

    Oops

  • Courtney J October 6, 2012 (10:17 am)

They’re still on. Hopefully, this can get remedied by tonight!!!

  • Hilary October 6, 2012 (10:21 am)

Maybe if the district didn’t sell the use of the field to private schools on Friday nights and let West Seattle High School play there that wouldn’t happen!

    • WSB October 6, 2012 (10:29 am)

West Seattle Stadium is a Seattle Parks facility, not a Seattle Public Schools facility.

  • Hilary October 6, 2012 (10:32 am)

    Then the parks

  • Anne October 6, 2012 (11:22 am)

Why shouldn’t private schools be able to rent the facility from the city? I’m sure the revenue is needed & welcome . We don’t know yet why this happened do we? So why start pointing fingers?

  • Krm66 October 6, 2012 (11:45 am)

Hilary- not sure how having a public vs private school use the field would make a difference if the lights are turned off or not.

  • Courtney J October 6, 2012 (12:26 pm)

It’s after noon and the lights are still on!!! WTH???

  • LM October 6, 2012 (12:36 pm)

I would put them on some kind of timer, just in case someone forgot to turn them off, but for now how do we turn them off?

  • WSD October 6, 2012 (12:45 pm)

OK, Somebody left the lights on. This is a big deal because??? WHY??? Look who we have in charge and the city we live in. That should explain it. OMG get a life people.

I tried the lighting hotline (Skylogics) we (WSSC) use for our soccer venues, but they don’t monitor the stadium. They gave me a number for another lighting monitoring company that handles Seattle Schools (Control Link), but they said they don’t control the stadium. I called the Parks Duty Officer, but went to an automated message. Don’t know who else to call…

    • WSB October 6, 2012 (2:01 pm)

Thanks, Tim. Seems silly that there wouldn’t be a trouble hotline posted at the stadium or something. Or worse, that (at least as of the last update) the person Patrick bumped into couldn’t find someone who could deal with it?

  • Robert October 6, 2012 (1:41 pm)

Sometimes you’ll notice the Port Crane lights on in the middle of the day – there should be a contact scheme for contacting them about that as well.

  • Kathleen October 6, 2012 (2:26 pm)

Just drove by on our way to Luna Park for shakes (yummm!). STILL ON!

  • boy October 6, 2012 (2:47 pm)

Now if we could get the city to turn off those darn street lights we could save alot of energy if not the world.

  • Rumbles October 6, 2012 (3:42 pm)

Stuff like this makes me crazy!

  • kae October 6, 2012 (4:01 pm)

I will be extremely upset if the lights are still on again tonight. I was up until 4am because of the light pollution entering my apartment and I live on the north side of SW Avalon Way. I can’t imagine living on the south side, facing the stadium lights! I left a message for someone at Seattle City Parks, but it mentioned taking care of things on the next business day. GRRRR!!

    Oh, the Humanity!

  • sgs October 6, 2012 (4:37 pm)

    Eddie, thanks for the laugh…….

  • Brian October 6, 2012 (5:15 pm)

This is the worst thing ever in the history of the world.

  • Jason October 6, 2012 (5:39 pm)

Thanks for the laughs Brian & Eddie, a welcome relief to the pain of my eyes rolling at the other 18 comments. However, from now on I’ll be reporting any street lights on during the day, lights left on at private homes, and other INCREDIBLE wastes of electricity to WSB via text whenever I find them. Suprised we haven’t heard from datamuse on this one yet! LOL

  • Lachlan October 6, 2012 (6:20 pm)

It’s almost certainly an electrical malfunction. The lights are on a timer; as a soccer ref, for our 8:30 & later games, we have a strict end for the games because the lights WILL go out on you if you don’t cease play 10m after the designated end of the match. Something’s broken. What’s stunning to me is that they are so slow in fixing it.

  • Twobottles October 6, 2012 (6:31 pm)

Won’t anyone think about the children?

  • wsdad October 6, 2012 (7:29 pm)

SO WHAT IF THE LIGHTS WERE LEFT ON. By the way Tracy, Thank You for posting my last comment.

  • NativeToSeattle October 6, 2012 (7:56 pm)

Hilary- all those families with kids in private schools pay the same taxes to support public education as the rest of us. Since it is a city park, any school should be able to use it.
    Anyways…are they turned off yet?

    • WSB October 6, 2012 (9:00 pm)

Still on. Co-publisher drove by about 20 minutes ago. (Adding a photo to the story, just for posterity’s sake.) And that, dear commenters who think this is trivial or hysterical, is the point – not even so much “oh, the waste!” but – if there is a problem here, why hasn’t it been fixed, so many hours after people started trying to reach someone? We’ll hopefully get some answers on Monday – wonder if the lights will still be on then.

  • Alki lover October 6, 2012 (8:59 pm)

The lights are still on, shinning into our bedrooms.

  • And Now For Something Completely Different October 6, 2012 (9:16 pm)

Yeah, I understand it’s Saturday, the normal offices are closed….but SURELY there is some ’emergency’ weekend number for the Parks Department to let them know if something is horribly wrong at one of parks. Whether or not you think this counts is moot, the point is there should be SOME way to contact them on the weekends/holidays.

  • jw October 6, 2012 (9:30 pm)

Will the last person leaving the stadium tonight please turn off the lights.

  • Harry Reems October 6, 2012 (10:24 pm)

Perfect night for a pickup game! Beers on me afterwards at The Bridge.

    • WSB October 7, 2012 (12:02 am)

Passed by at 11:50 pm. Now off. Will be very interested to hear what happened.

  • Gina October 7, 2012 (4:42 pm)

Perhaps there is a secret growing operation at the stadium.

  • Ccp October 9, 2012 (11:09 am)

Just to inform people about those lights, they are high pressure sodium lights which actually take more energy to turn on and off rather than leaving them on, so having them on for that long actually used less “electricity” than turning them on and off for a week of typical usage.

    • WSB October 9, 2012 (11:12 am)

Thanks. We still are collecting followup information by the way, and the point for the people we heard from wasn’t so much energy wastage (or non-wastage) but (a) lights blazing in dead of night and (b) why did it take so long to reach somebody? There apparently IS a hotline, per Parks, which so far has provided most of the info I need for the followup – coming up later today.

Sorry, comment time is over.
