‘West Side Wall’ murals painted out. But their champion promises a comeback

By Tracy Record

Where what’s likely West Seattle’s longest retaining wall once sported these murals along its street side …

… and art like this along its block-long alley side …

… it’s all now a drab gray that was blank for about a day until it drew this protest:

We got tips about this last weekend. The wall story on the north and west sides of the CVS/ex-Rite Aid lot (5217 California SW) dates back almost three years – here’s our first report from 2023, about what was given the name the “West Side Wall.” We learned shortly afterward that not only was renowned West Seattle muralist Desmond Hansen the creator of the baseball mural on the SW Dawson side, but also shepherding the evolving multi-artist project on the alley side.

That’s who the first reader to tell us about the paintout, Jared, contacted when he discovered it a few days ago. He told us Hansen was on the case. We contacted Hansen directly and met him at the wall this afternoon to talk about what happened and what’s next.

The situation is “really unfortunate,” he told us. “This alley was a great place” to make art. Not all graffiti-style, either.

He says someone complained to the city, the city sent CVS an abatement letter, and – not knowing the history behind the wall art, since it wasn’t anywhere in writing – the corporation hired a paint crew.

As soon as Hansen heard about it, he got busy contacting CVS management. “CVS is supportive,” he said – that included the acquisitions director, whose portfolio included this store (converted from Rite Aid last summer), and district manager. He says they’re in contact with the city and restoration can start once they have an acknowledgment in writing that it’s not going to generate another abatement action.

The “West Side Wall” was more organized than it might have appeared to casual viewers, Hansen explained – the alley-wall art rotated – an artist who came to work on the alley might decide which was the “ugliest” of the current crop and paint something new in that space. Meantime, he said the artists policed the work to ensure “no hate,” among other rules.

He and some of the artists also did weeding and trash pickup periodically – including syringes and mini liquor bottles – and Hansen said he’d also moved along some people who tried to camp in the alley, which stretches from Dawson to Brandon Streets, with back yards and garages lining the west side.

Before talking to Hansen today, we had sent an inquiry to CVS corporate to ask if they indeed had initiated the paintout; the reply came at the end of the day today from corporate communicator Amy Thibault, who confirmed it was them: “The wall was recently painted after we received complaints from community members about graphic and offensive content. We’re in touch with a local artist and the city about the wall and evaluating potential ways to ensure local artists can continue showcase their work in a way that all can enjoy.”

We also inquired today with the city Department of Construction and Inspections – which handles this type of complaint – but haven’t heard back yet.

Hansen says part of the situation might be a “blessing in disguise” – he expects this will lead to a written record of the art agreement, to avoid something like this happening again, at least as long as CVS is leasing the property (which is owned by an unrelated investment firm that Hansen said he tried to reach but couldn’t). He says he probably won’t re-create his baseball murals, instead considering featuring Kraken hockey or Sounders soccer, maybe even the once-and-future Sonics. But first he’s going to continue checking in daily until the situation is resolved: “I’ll do whatever I can to get this wall back.”

That would include, if there was a way, talking with whomever complained, to listen to their concerns and explain what a place like this means to artists. (If that’s you, you can reach him through his website.)

This is such a shame – it was beautiful work. Hoping this can lead to some reasonable protections. Desmond, you’re the best – appreciate everything you do for our community!!

We live on the block behind CVS and LOVED this art wall. We walked past it at least weekly, and enjoyed both the Mariners mural and the glimpses of the rotating mural in the alley. We were sad and baffled when the art disappeared.  Thank you WSB for the excellent detective work in finding out what happened. We hope Desmond Hansen is able to work out a written agreement so “remediation” does not happen again. And, we look forward to new art….maybe featuring the Torrent?

  • Yma March 31, 2026 (9:32 pm)

I’d assumed the paint-over was wholly corporate CVS initiated. How sad to learn is was a complaint from one of our own community. I’d never seen any offensive content and the Mariner wall brought a smile every…single…time I drove by. I do hope whomever was upset by this communicates with Mr. Hansen so that we can have an idea of what caused offense & can all enjoy art & expression here again.

Read the post…someone complained and the city caved and sent an “abatement” letter to CVS.

      Seattle “passive/aggressive” Karen strikes again.

ONE person doesn’t like it, so the WHOLE of West Seattle can’t see it.

Happy to hear this will continue. If local sports are featured, please remember the Storm and Torrent!

    • Bill#1 April 1, 2026 (2:31 am)

      Why not the Mariners?

      • rc April 1, 2026 (8:56 am)

This is like when someone says oh I love pancakes, and the first comment is why do you hate waffles?

Im thinking of designing and painting a mural that embodies all the seattle sports teams that have existed as well as music icons all in one big painting. That is however if they let the wall be reinstated.

    • B April 1, 2026 (8:03 am)

And Reign! Mural celebrating all regional sports including women and men would create more cheer.

          Yes please!!

Gotta include the Seattle Metropolitans, the first American team to win the Stanley Cup (in 1917).

    • Seattle sun April 1, 2026 (8:47 am)

Yes! Please include our fabulous sports teams that are also WOMEN!

    • AJ April 1, 2026 (5:26 pm)

I’m personally not a fan of sports.  With that said I have no problem with not including sport murals.

Don’t forgot our champion rugby team the Seawolves!

I’m not going to be shopping at this CVS or any other until they make this right. They replaced art with a drab gray wall and our city became uglier because of it. Bring back the beautiful art

    • Beepee March 31, 2026 (11:03 pm)

Kind of unfortunate that a lot of people need to get medication from CVS , but who really shops there anyways ? Those murals are some of the best in the city, bringing joy and pleasure to everyone who gets to see them.  Not once did I see something offensive in the material/mixed media displayed on those walls.  They were so good that I think amature street artists were too stunned to even attempt placing “their art’ over them.  Not to mention having grown up right across that alley way, I don’t think anything could have made this little spot in West Seattle look nicer than the nursery just a stones throw away.

    • Bill#1 April 1, 2026 (2:35 am)

      Ditto!

    • aRF April 1, 2026 (6:34 am)

Your anger at CVS is misplaced.

    • Anne April 1, 2026 (6:48 am)

Did you even read  the story? They received an Abatement order from the City-they were following the law-but are working to get that order lifted so  painting can resume. So instead of doing nothing -CVS is trying to fix this-I’m grateful & will go out of my way to shop there & support a business that supports art & artists.

    • Desmond April 1, 2026 (6:04 pm)

I’ve heard a few others say this too. Your voice is definitely heard. I hope this art wall gets reinstated whole heartedly.

  • WS Res April 1, 2026 (12:11 am)

graphic and offensive content”   Well done everybody.  You’ve saved the neighborhood from… pictures of baseball players.

    • Bill#1 April 1, 2026 (2:35 am)

      Another ditto!

    • Desmond April 1, 2026 (6:05 pm)

Ya its astonishing what people think is offensive.

  • Suzanne April 1, 2026 (2:06 am)

It’s incredibly disappointing that one neighbor caused this wall art to be painted over. I walk that route often because it was so fun to see. This situation reminds me of the beloved goats along Jacobsen, and the one nearby neighbor who made it her mission to force the family to sell the goats by claiming it was a petting zoo and therefore not allowed in the city (it was not. She simply found a loophole in the regulations and used it as a cudgel). One grumpy neighbor shouldn’t have the power to do this when something brings so much joy to the rest of us.I’m surprised that CVS acted so quickly in response to this complaint without really looking into it. The work was strikingly beautiful, all of it, and a joy to see.
Desmond, if you need a petition to make sure this doesn’t happen again, let us know. I’m sure that one neighbor will be outnumbered by hundreds of us who want your work, and the work of others on that wall, to continue without having to fight for the right to display it.

    • ITotallyAgreeWithYou April 1, 2026 (1:41 pm)

Suzanne- it sounds like it was the city who acted so quickly in sending CVS an abatement letter and CVS just responded to that. It was the city who should have dug a little deeper into the situation.

    • Desmond April 1, 2026 (6:08 pm)

A petition is the next step if CVS doesnt step up for the artist community i will need to show the many voices that are so disappointed by the decision they made

      • Ex-Westwood Resident April 2, 2026 (12:30 pm)

The decision was NOT theirs, CVS, to make.

The decision was made by the CITY, who acquiesced to a neighborhood snowflake/Karen about the depiction of Seattle sports team as being offensive.

This is why we can’t have nice things in this city.

In the effort to appease one person, you end up turning on MANY.

The city should have told that person to “pack sand, we’re not going to do anything about it until we receive MANY, MANY more complaints from DIFFERENT people about it.”

  • ws April 1, 2026 (4:08 am)

Sad to see this had happened.  It would be amazing if maybe hansen would maybe consider featuring one of the amazing pro female teams we have here.

    • Desmond April 1, 2026 (6:10 pm)

Definitely i will feature the storm too. I have a plan for a great mural to be painted that embodies so much of Seattle. All at no cost to CVS either i might add. Or the neighbors.

      • Art of appreciation April 4, 2026 (11:34 pm)

Desmond, thank you for helping make our neighborhoods better with your fantastic art. Please, when this restoration is approved,  have WSB post a link so that the community can contribute to pay the costs of restoration.

  • Claire Swazey April 1, 2026 (7:46 am)

I’ve seen many abatement filings in my job, but never for a mural. I’m very surprised that the city would do that.

    • Desmond April 1, 2026 (6:12 pm)

This was what people at CVS said happened. Not sure what to believe right now. There is a lot of dumb founded fingers being pointed and nobody wanting to own up to who ultimately made the decision.

  • Claire Swazey April 1, 2026 (7:47 am)

  • MorganJunction11 April 1, 2026 (8:19 am)

We were saddened to see this painted over when we rode our bikes by on Sunday. My 4 yr old always loved to see “Julio”. I hope they can bring back this amazing art again.

  • Kirsten April 1, 2026 (8:27 am)

Whomever complained should be ashamed of themselves. They should be fined and required to pay for the artist’s time and paint to redo it. Did the City even come out to look at it?

    • Desmond April 1, 2026 (6:17 pm)

Pretty sure we know who it was. There has only ever been one person who has shown hatred to me when painting there. Ultimately they know who they are and the darkness that consumes their heart. I bet they felt emboldened when the wall got painted and loved every minute of it. True hatred for art this person has. I bet they have never taken the time to do any clean up in the alley there. I personally have spent many days removing sticker bushes, taking trash to the dump and sweeping just to get the wall visible enough so more people will feel safe and a sense of pride in that alley.

      • Neighbor of Westside wall April 1, 2026 (7:35 pm)

Hey I don’t think its that person, I’m convinced it’s someone else. I think the one that turned this in is new.

      • Neighbor of the West Side Wall April 2, 2026 (9:12 am)

Also have you checked in with the dude who did all the tiny circles?  He might need some support, that was a crazy endeavor

  • Jake April 1, 2026 (8:36 am)

I’m so sad about this. I loved taking a detour walk from Me Kwa Mooks up to The Void or Junction and detouring here to check out this wall.  I hope we can center other artists and not just Desmond only on this too… I have plenty of friends needing commission work.

    • Desmond April 1, 2026 (6:24 pm)

Im only one of maybe 100+ artists that have painted there. All of us painted there on our own dime. Nobody has been commissioned to paint there. Once the wall is reinstated anyone who wants to paint there should be able to. Im just one of the artists that is going to extra lengths to see that it gets reinstated and this time have a written agreement. Im one of the few that is not willing to just let this go. Others have their oen way of not letting this go as you can see someone wrote a big message on the wall and like i was telling CVS this could escalate fast if they dont do whats right for the artists that love to paint there.

  • wander April 1, 2026 (8:49 am)

Come on, this is art. It was not graffiti, it was not offensive (do you really hate baseball that much?). Glad Hansen and CVS are working it. Excited to see the next mural!

  • Neighbor of the West Side Wall April 1, 2026 (9:17 am)

I live on the alley sharing the art wall, immediately across from one of the most active areas.  I didn’t complain, and no one else I know has admitted to complaining, most of us celebrated the art.  Back when Desmond started the whole thing, it took a minute to understand the full concept, but now that we have lived with it and have seen it working, I don’t know where the objections are coming from.  While its a shame that everything was painted over, most of the art was rotating and painted over cyclically.  A written, firm agreement, with expectations included, will be welcome and I’ll sign off.

    • Desmond April 1, 2026 (6:28 pm)

Well while i love the admiration i was just one of the many artists to start painting there. I just happened to be one that took a lot of pride in keeping the alley clean and doing what i could to make it a good experience for the artists as well as the neighborhood. Thank you for your kind words.

  • MC April 1, 2026 (9:43 am)

Desmond has created some beautiful tributes around our community. It would be great if he could add women athletes to the mural too as they are a vital part of Seattle’s sports.

    • Desmond April 1, 2026 (6:30 pm)

That is definitely in the cards should CVS and the city give us the official green light to paint there again.

  • Neighbor April 1, 2026 (10:24 am)

I wasn’t fond of all the content on the alley murals, especially when they painted a big ass glock in this family neighborhood. But still it was better the open invitation again for ridiculous graffiti thanks to the complainer🤦 I’m almost certain I know who you are

    • Desmond April 1, 2026 (6:33 pm)

Appreciate your honest opinion and words. We were all doing our best to make sure nothing hateful or offensive was painted.

  • Nancy Schutt April 1, 2026 (11:25 am)

Fine art museums who plundered artifact from many cultures in 1800s, are now returning themIn 2026, local museums should get busy protecting and collecting Hansen’s work

  • NS April 1, 2026 (12:10 pm)

I’d like to suggest the Reign or Torrent.

    • Desmond April 1, 2026 (6:35 pm)

Yes it is definitely going to happen if the powers that be let us paint there again. I will do a big piece that embodies all walks of life from Seattle.

  • millerab6 April 1, 2026 (2:43 pm)

Another voice to bring back the static and rotating art so the City and CVS management know how much it was loved! It made the neighborhood so special.  When you add back some sports figures, including more women, may I also suggest Josh Naylor as well to bring those Canadian tourists up to the Junction from Alki and downtown. :)

    • Desmond April 1, 2026 (6:37 pm)

Good idea. Note taken. Definitely going to paint a nice mural on the street side that is inclusive to all the northwest.

  • Illustrated April 1, 2026 (3:01 pm)

Someone said it was OFFENSIVE? Where??? To who??? I’d like to see what that person’s McMansion looks like.

    • Desmond April 1, 2026 (6:38 pm)

Me too my friend. Me too.

  • Sharpie April 1, 2026 (6:36 pm)

I have enjoyed that alley’s unsactioned  murals many times over the last few years.
I have also witnessed taggers tagging in the alley like seen in the half cropped third photo.
I have occasionally turned around to avoid interacting with some people hanging out there.

I can see how someone might make a complaint with needles and trash showing up.

Is tagging also art or how does tagging fit in?

  • Desmond April 1, 2026 (6:49 pm)

I will do whatever it takes to bring this wall back and add beauty to what use to be a dreary surrounding. You all should have seen what that alley looked like a few years ago before we started cleaning up and painting there. 4 ft of sticker bushes lined the wall that were full of syringes and liquor bottles, broken glass everywhere and you could barely even drive through there. I personally did many dump runs and any time individuals weee trying to start encampments there I would convince them to vacate and even pick up all the trash accumulated and leave behind. All the artists would be told by the neighbors that they loved the art and always looked forward to seeing what new art was painted. I had one person tell me how until we cleaned up the alley and started painting there she was previously scared to walk down the alley. Because of the wall there are many people who have traveled to paint art there many of which are famous professional artists. I will say also that for most kids who are interested in painting this gives them a place to do so without feeling like a criminal. This was a place for mural painters and not just taggers. There is a big difference and Im not sure many people who have been fed tons of propaganda around graffiti know that. Thank you all for showing your love and support. Hopefully we will have good news about it soon.
