SEEN FROM WEST SEATTLE: Submarine passing Alki; stadium rainbow

Two sights sent by readers a short time ago:

SUBMARINE: A texter sent that photo of a submarine as it passed Alki Point, headed toward Bremerton.

RAINBOW: While the Mariners are playing right now at Toronto, their stadium back here at home is receiving a rainbow. Thanks to Kelly Malloy for the photo! This follows an unexpectedly sunny afternoon, but more rain is likely on the way.

Here are a few shots of the sub. I’m still not used to seeing these, so it always excites my inner child.

Was lucky enough to fly over this around 5pm, en route to Paine Field. Pics don’t show the (much smaller) Navy or Coast Guard escort boat tagging along.

Saw the sub off of Alki Pt this eve.  Sub plus close-in fishing vessels (tribal ??), plus rainbow made for a photo-worthy sight.  Anyone know what kind of submarine?  Looked pretty big, but Trident (ballistic missile) subs typically don’t prowl lower Puget Sound since they home port out of Bangor and hence use Hood Canal, instead.  Attack or Cruise Missile sub going to/from Bremerton seems more likely, but the size made me wonder.  Thanks in advance.

If you zoom in on the aft section of the first photo from Steve, you may see the distinctive curves of an Ohio class. These visit once in a while, presumably for maintenance.

They don’t “visit”, there are at least four of them permanently homeported at Naval Base Kitsap – Bangor

Go Navy! I was married to a Radioman on 637-Class Submarines (Fast Attacks), and when I see a boat I get misty!

Sorry, comment time is over.
