DRUGSTORE TURNOVER: More than just Rite Aid and Bartell

While big changes loom for four freestanding West Seattle drugstores – California Rite Aid and both Bartell Drugs converting to CVS, Westwood Rite Aid closing – change is apparently on the way to at least one other local drugstore too. Our routine check of commercial listings reveals that the Roxbury Walgreens is listed for sale ($3.75 million) or lease, with an availability date of December 1st. It’s a 14,000-sf building on a 53,000-sf site, zoned for mixed-use five-story development. We’ll follow up with the company tomorrow.

Chubby and Tubby was the best place to get Xtratufs in the olden days!

God dam it we just moved transferred all of our prescriptions there ! It’s so flipping frustrating!

Pretty soon there won’t be any pharmacies. It will be all mail order. It sucks.

This looks like a property sale, not a store closing. Walgreens doesn’t own most of the buildings / land their stores are in. So hopefully that’s all that’s going on here.

Chubby and Tubby! When I was young and broke, we got our Christmas trees from there. If you turned the bare spots to the wall and tinseled the heck out of it, it looked fine.

Same here. We used to call them “half trees.” One year I splurged and bought 2 and joined them together. You could have sworn it was a king nobel! One year I still had some shopping to do after I bought the 3.00 half tree and decided in order to avoid someone stealing it out of the bed of my truck, I tucked it into the passenger side of the cab!

One year, when I was about to pay for my tiny tree, the manager surprised me by upgrading me to a beautiful fir he had in the back.  I think they did that for random customers as a holiday gesture.

My favorite Chubby and Tubby purchase was a sign that said “Forget the dog, beware of owner”. I was in middle school back then, so could only afford things under a dollar. #bringbackchubbyandtubby.

C&T was the place to get Chucks in Seattle. They had a whole wall of different ones.

Yes! I used to buy all my Chuck Taylors at Chubby & Tubby. Sometimes they also had some Dickies & Carhart stuff. Chubby & Tubby would frikkin rule the streetwear scene if they came back!

Chubby & Tubby! YES!!! I remember my siblings getting their Chuck Taylor Converse in the back room. I miss this place! Hey, I am not even *THAT* old either ;) – Late 30’s WS gal, born and raised.

Chubby & Tubby was an institution. Absolutely loved that place. Would be outstanding if somehow they could return.

This is great so many still remember Chubby and Tubby’s! My dad was a single father to us 3 and when it was time for new school clothes, winter coats Christmas Tree… C&B is where we headed. We also went to the Wigwam Store but it wasn’t as memorable as Chubby and Tubby’s.

I hope something moves in there are all.  There used to be vibrant businesses on all four corners.  Then Origins moved and we have the forever-under-construction window showroom or whatever that is, the formerly-Bartell’s-now-graffiti-installation building, and soon-to-be empty Walgreens.  :\

Same, my heart breaks at the thought of having not one but TWO empty pharmacy buildings at that intersection.

We always bought our Converse All Star blems at Chubby and Tubby.. The store had about anything you wanted. And agree the Charlie Brown Christmas trees were  a great deal.

I asked the clerk there this morning whether the store was going to close.  He said he had not heard anything about it closing, but he also said about any pending sale of the property, “They have been saying that for two years now.”  Of course, when a store like that does close, the employer probably wouldn’t tell employees until as late as possible.

I check the commercial real estate listings almost daily. Someone may have been “saying” that but this is the first public listing I’ve seen.

Sorry, comment time is over.
