UPDATE: Why Madison Middle School was sheltering in place (updated late Friday night)

9:05 AM: Police are at Madison Middle School after an incident described in this note sent to families:

Good Morning Madison Families, at approximately 8:25 am students reported a vehicle approached some students in an unfriendly manner in the front of the school and sped away. Seattle Police were immediately notified and we escorted all students inside the building. We are currently sheltering in place and have extra SPS security on site. We will notify you when our SIP is lifted.

The note didn’t describe the vehicle but police in the area are currently looking for one described as a light-colored 4-door Hyundai Elantra.

9:18 AM: The initial dispatch was that a “suspect in a mask pulled up to the school and pointed a gun at them.” Four people in all reported to be in the car (described above), with the armed person described as a “Hispanic male, late teens,” dark clothing including a ski mask-style black face covering.

10:04 AM: No word of any arrest(s) but the investigation continues; commenters report the “shelter in place” has been lifted.

12:55 PM: Just to note, we have of course requested followup info both from the district and from SPD and will add whatever we hear back.

5:45 PM: Still no word from SPD. The district provided us with the message Madison principal Dr. Robert Gary sent to families at day’s end, but it contained no new information about the actual incident.

11:45 PM: Just got the police report narrative. It says, as we wrote above, the initial dispatch was that “suspect with mask pulled up to school, pointed a gun at RP (reporting party), last seen driving northbound on 45th … suspect description Hispanic male, late teens, black balaclava [ski mask], all black clothing.” The report says the person who reported a gun was pointed at them was a Madison staffer, not student. Then 911 got “a call from a parent saying her daughter told her that occupants of the vehicle are trying to sell narcotics to students and threatening to shoot up the school. This complainant has limited information, says daughter is in the office with staff now.”

The officer who wrote the report subsequently arrived at Madison, talked with the principal, who aid “he called after a staff member … advised him that suspects in a white vehicle had pointed a firearm at (the staffer).” The officer wrote that the staffer said they were in their vehicle “approaching the school when (staffer) noticed a 2010s (redacted) sedan with tinted windows parked facing SB on 45 AV SW near SW Hinds ST. XXXXX stated the sedan was obviously stopped speaking to students who were on the sidewalk and (staffer) stated the students appeared scared. (staffer) pulled up behind the vehicle and the vehicle reversed and pulled up beside (staffer, who) yelled at the occupants stating “what’s up?” when the driver of the vehicle pointed what appeared to be a silver firearm in (staffer’s) direction saying “what’s up?” back in an aggressive manner. (Staffer) told the kids to go inside of the school. The vehicle then took off. (Staffer) advised the kids to let the principal know and to call 911 and then assisted in getting the kids inside of the school to lock down. (Staffer) described the suspects as all HMs, with tanned skin, wearing all black clothing and balaclava’s showing their eyes and noses.” The report says two students talked to police, with the principal’s permission, about what they saw; they said the people in the car “offered to sell them marijuana” and “continued to circle the school approximately three times.” The report says these students did not report seeing a gun “but stated they were told by friends that the occupants had firearms.” It also says officers “were unable to locate the teen whose parent called in stating that the suspects threatened to shoot up the school” and that “the principal was unaware of a student making these remarks.” That’s where the report ends; the only other info we’ve received is from a district spokesperson who says “an SPS Security Division Lead was placed at the school after the incident occurred and stayed for the remainder of the school day.”

hi everyone! me & my friends are at Madison middle school right now. we’re currently all sitting in our first period everything seems to be chill from inside. We will keep you guys updated.

    • Fellow Madison Mom May 30, 2025 (9:32 am)

Thank you for the update Amelia. Glad you are all safe!

    • Gratitude May 30, 2025 (11:22 am)

Thank you for the timely info Amelia. You have contributed to many a family being “chill” with you. So sorry you kids had to experience this today, though. Please Spread the Peace & Kindness, everyone. In gratitude 🙏🏼

My 7th grader heard that “drunk teenagers with a gun tried to take kids”, which is a huge contrast to Dr Gary’s message. Staff may need to try to do damage control to try to quell some of the more inflammatory rumors

    • Robert May 30, 2025 (10:29 am)

That is mostly true, just they were high, not drunk. I have an eyewitness account.

    • student May 30, 2025 (10:55 am)

yeah that didn’t happen at all, I was outside when it happened. they were driving around badly, doing a lot of swerving. they drifted around the corner too. I do know they asked a kid if they wanted dr*gs, and when the kid refused, they sped away.

    • Madison student May 30, 2025 (11:30 am)

Yeah many of my friends were followed for blocks on their walk to school being threatend and offered drugs even when saying no over and over again.

  • ConcernedWSParent May 30, 2025 (9:24 am)

What I don’t understand is if you have Madison sheltering in place, why are Lafayette Elementary students out at recess? Shouldn’t the other schools within a few blocks radius also be sheltering as well? It doesn’t feel like a safe situation to allow schools just blocks away to be “business as usual” if the middle school is locked down…

    • Steve May 30, 2025 (11:23 am)

WSHS, Alki (Schmitz), Genesee are all close enough to warrant a shelter in place. If it was a credible threat of someone brandishing a gun towards kids from a car SPS should be concerned enough to do that. Especially if the car’s location is unknown and it’s driving erratically.

      • ConcernedWSParent May 30, 2025 (11:06 pm)

I couldn’t agree more. If any threat is significant enough to warrant a shelter in place for one school, certainly any school in that area/neighborhood should also be notified by SPS and requested to SIP as well especially when they have no idea where the suspects are. Hardly surprised to see yet another failure of this school district.

  • Orb May 30, 2025 (9:29 am)

As a parent of a Madison middle schooler, it’s concerning that a gun being pulled out on middle schoolers is considered “approached in an unfriendly manner.” Not sitting right with me.

    • LT May 30, 2025 (10:00 am)

I am not sure if the gun story is accurate, however. In a tense situation, details are not well-understood and then can get embellished. I suspect the incident was more serious than indicated in the message to families but less than the rumors flying around the school. This is why I think the admin needs to be more transparent. If they hedge, the rumors will just get bigger.

      • Madison Student May 30, 2025 (4:11 pm)

When we got inside, we usually wait by the door till school starts to get comfort period, but instead they all just ushered us down to lunch room, and there were already rumors spreading about a guy selling guns and drugs, which freaked everyone out, and was absolutely no explanation for anything that was going on.

    • Thomas May 30, 2025 (10:03 am)

If that in fact happened. Which we do not know. The description of what a child overheard happened isn’t a reason to jump to conclusions.

      • Orb May 30, 2025 (11:57 am)

If you read the initial dispatch reported by WSB, “It was that a ‘suspect in a mask pulled up to the school and pointed a gun at them.’”Unsure why you think anyone is jumping to conclusions when it was literally called into dispatch as such.

        • Alki2o6 May 30, 2025 (3:38 pm)

          Exactly.

  • Madison parent May 30, 2025 (9:47 am)

I agree this is very concerning, before Dr. Gary sent out that email/text. My high schooler sent me a police report saying a car pulled up and was pointing a gun at Madison middle school. Idk why he didn’t add this information to inform all the families of what actually happened!!

  • Madison Parent May 30, 2025 (9:52 am)

Sending support to the staff and students at Madison today!  I am sure they are working on a safety plan for after school today.

  • Anonymous May 30, 2025 (10:00 am)

I’m a 7th grader at Madison. 1st period is being held longer than usual because of the shelter in place. Everything’s fine, Dr. Gary came into our class and said everything was under control and there’s no need to worry and that police are working on locating the car. A kid in my class was there and communicated with the kids in ski masks. He said they were in the car the whole time. He also said the kids in ski masks were going around asking middle schoolers if they “wanted drugs” while driving along 45th and stopped every time they saw a kid. He said he never saw that they were armed. At 10:00 right now, shelter in place is no longer in affect. Hope this is helpful :)

  • amelia May 30, 2025 (10:00 am)

we just got out off shelter in place, we are all joe heading to 2nd period like normal.

  • Jared May 30, 2025 (10:01 am)

Shelter in place was just lifted, I was on the phone with my daughter.

  • Tracie May 30, 2025 (10:03 am)

10:00 AM text: Police informed school students are safe and and release shelter in place. Students will continue with learning and activities.

  • Pinto May 30, 2025 (10:06 am)

Not surprising they were masked teenagers in a Hyundai. How many stolen Hyundais have ended up in W. Seattle either crashed or abandoned? Sounds like these kids were out in a stolen car partying all night and decided to terrorize middle schoolers waiting to go to school. They are probably long gone by now. Hyundai owners, is there a way to track your vehicles? If not, recommend getting an AirPod and hiding it in your vehicle

  • Madison student May 30, 2025 (10:10 am)

The shelter in place ended at 10:00. there is a police car outside rn.

  • Robert May 30, 2025 (10:10 am)

No change to schedule, just shorter 2nd. Glad everyone’s safe

  • WestSeattleCoug May 30, 2025 (10:17 am)

I wonder if this Elantra is related to the one mentioned in the post on the Admiral 7-11 robbery last night? Coincidence?

    • WSB May 30, 2025 (10:23 am)

I have no information on whether it was or wasn’t but there are still multiple mentions of Hyundais and Kias daily/nightly in dispatches around the city, more so than any other car makes – early today (after the 7-Eleven holdup) for example there was a report of a light-colored Elantra crashed seven minutes after one matching its description was stolen in Sunrise Heights ,,,

  • Emily May 30, 2025 (10:29 am)

I am in second period right now after the shelter in place was lifted. It was very very unclear what was happening in the moment and there were absolutely no adults near where they gathered us in the lunchroom. people are saying that they got offered drugs by the people and rumors are spreading that have not been regulated well. The teachers didn’t even let us on our phones while the shelter in place was going on and before that. We would get yelled at if our phone was ringing from our parents who were concerned. We thought it was a school shooting and it was scary.

    • Alki2o6 May 30, 2025 (12:10 pm)

Goodness, that is so scary. I hate this world sometimes and I’m sorry that the adults seem to have let you kids down. So many adults keep letting kids down; we need to do better for the kids. Thank for the concise information, take good care.

  • Maybe? May 30, 2025 (10:32 am)

Could this be the vehicle? STOLEN SILVER ELANTRA: Megan’s 2012 silver Hyundai Elantra was stolen in North Admiral between Saturday and Wednesday. License plate BKY4563; distinctive feature, “the taillights are melted from a fire in 2020.” If you find it, call 911 and refer to police report 25-144801.

    • student May 30, 2025 (11:00 am)

I saw it go by, it was white, not silver, and it had a paper lisenseplate, like it was rented or newly bought or something

  • RickB May 30, 2025 (11:03 am)

Ah, the “well-regulated militia” on parade today. So grateful for the Second Amendment.

  • Anonymous May 30, 2025 (11:20 am)

Glad its over, but let me just say I appreciate the updates from the kids in the school!  They actually seemed to have the most knowledge of what was happening and communicated pretty clearly.

    • Alki2o6 May 30, 2025 (12:10 pm)

      Totally!

  • Madison Student May 30, 2025 (11:55 am)

People are over exaggerating, nobody thought it was a school shooting

    • ok May 30, 2025 (6:48 pm)

      right 😭

    • Student June 3, 2025 (11:43 am)

For real. We just joked about it in first period with our teacher, then she gave us candy. All these parents are overreacting so much lmao.

  • Alki2o6 May 30, 2025 (12:12 pm)

Elementary  kids were outside 2 blocks away during this, shame on SPS!!

    • Madison Parent May 30, 2025 (12:48 pm)

Why shame on SPS? The facts aren’t straight. There was no gun.

      • Alki2o6 May 30, 2025 (3:22 pm)

Reports of a gun, dangerous driving, offering kids drugs, following kids….enough caution to shelter in place….but no thought to give the elementary school 3 (three!) blocks away a heads up?! Seriously.

    • ConcernedWSParent May 30, 2025 (11:15 pm)

I 100% agree with you. The kindergarteners and 1st graders were outside for recess while the SIP was started. Shame on SPS for not taking the threat more seriously and keeping all students in the neighborhood indoors while they worked through the incident.

      • MMSStudent June 3, 2025 (11:47 am)

This is insane. Why would they shut down a school that didn’t have a threat against it? Madison wasn’t even under threat really, the people in the car (to my knowledge) never said anything specific about Madison, so why stop them? I really think people like Alki206 and Conceredwsparent need to think logically about this. Do better. No one was harmed, so why shame the district that protected the kids during this. I hope you can get this point through your head.

  • jollyroger May 30, 2025 (12:25 pm)

At 8:45 there was no urgency to get students being dropped off to get into school ASAP. No site of district security or staff out in front or on the south side of the building.

  • Olive May 30, 2025 (4:06 pm)

    What does Hispanic mean?

    • Mike May 30, 2025 (4:23 pm)

      Hispanic – Spanish-speaking ancestry/culture – ex. Spain, Mexico, Chile
Latino – Latin American origin (regardless of language) – Brazil, Mexico, Peru

    • CarDriver May 30, 2025 (4:40 pm)

Hispanic refers to the race of the suspected perpetrators. I’m surprised someone hasn’t complained that it’s racial profiling to name the race.

  • Madison student May 30, 2025 (4:28 pm)

There were already rumors spreading about what was happening before school even started, because they held us down in the lunchroom instead of letting us go to our first period classes even though the lunch room is way more dangerous if there was a threat

  • anonymous May 30, 2025 (6:32 pm)

madison student here, other student in my class said that her and her friends got asked if they wanted weed, and when they said no car sped off

  • WSB May 30, 2025 (11:40 pm)

JUST got the police-report narrative. Adding above as fast as I can summarize.

  • Autumn May 31, 2025 (9:54 am)

On the bright side, it’s encouraging that none of the Bulldogs said “yes” to wanting drugs!

  • mom May 31, 2025 (10:32 am)

Thank you to the alert staffer, we appreciate you

  • W.C May 31, 2025 (9:30 pm)

This sounds like a group of people I recently saw at WestWood Village in front of target, I was walking towards target and was next to Ross when a car flew by too fast they whipped around the parking lot and then came by my way all of the young men in the car were wearing ski masks and one of them leaned out of the window to hell something at some people walking into target, then they drove off really fast. They were definitely in a lighter colored sedan, but I was too slow to react and grab the license plate number unfortunately. They might be the same people up to no good in West Seattle. Best to keep an eye out and report what we can find out I bet.

Sorry, comment time is over.
