TRAFFIC ALERT: Two big jams just east of here

1:32 PM: If you have to head east of West Seattle – you might want to wait a while. Traffic feeds are tracking two big incidents – one a crash that has blocked all of eastbound I-90 near Rainier Avenue, one a crash that has blocked much of southbound I-5 at Spokane St. (the West Seattle Bridge). And big backups are reported with both. Even once the scenes are clear, backups take a while longer to dissipate.

2:42 PM: The I-5 crash scene is clear, per WSDOT, which says the I-90 crash scene is in cleanup mode.

The smoke from the RV in the I-90 E tunnel is so it is affecting 1-90 W air quality and visibility

Two MVAs involving vehicles on fire, less than two miles from each other, hitting the 911 log within a minute of each other. Weird coincidence.

We came through the tunnel (in a morohome) westbound at about that time without any idea it happened and then promptly crawled through the backup for the car fire near Spokane Street. The joys of traffic in the big city.I’m not surprised at the eastbound crash in the tunnel. The lane configuration and signs in that area are confusing, it’s dark and narrow. And if you’re following Google maps voice guidance, it would have you believe that you must stay left, instead of it being OK to stay right at the barrier, causing drivers to panic merge. Glad the driver got out ok.

Maybe this is some key evidence supporting the idea that you should know where you’re going and drive like a normal person rather than having Google tell you to drive your car into another vehicle because you’ve got no idea what you’re doing on the road.

I hate driving through that tunnel.  Lanes are too narrow for the speed limit.  Weren’t the lanes narrowed years ago to add an additional lane of traffic?

Tracy – no the eastbound lanes were refurbished and used from the original tunnels!
