WHALE-WATCHING: Northbound orcas off West Seattle

Thanks to Kersti Muul of Salish Wildlife Watch for another alert about whales heading this way – they’re northbound, south of Fauntleroy, right now. These are transient killer whales again. Let us know if you see them!

P.S. Kersti warns of “choppy seas,” so not optimal viewing this time.

Is there a mailing list or notification I can receive when the whales (or anything interesting) are spotted off WS?  I live on Beach Drive and could step out my door to see the whales (or an aircraft carrier) but my WSB checks always seem to be 30 min late!

Some of the local marime-mammal advocates have said they were working on one, but I haven’t seen any announcements yet. I would like to say we could do one but we are stretched to the breaking point with what we do as it is … we are very hesitant to take on “push notifications.” There is probably a way to rig a notification whenever we publish something tagged “whales” – https://westseattleblog.com/category/whales – TR

The Orca Network Facebook page is usually very good at providing real-time info, with watchers posting frequent updates on location, direction, speed etc. Not every post is relevant to WS but I’ve had a lot of luck by adjusting my FB settings so I see new posts from them first.

I was going to ask the same thing… I’ve tried setting up Google alerts but have never gotten them to work for this

They made a nice close pass at constellation before heading into the fog, westward at the Alpha Tango Buoy
