ORCAS: Whales’ Saturday visit

9:57 AM: For the second day in a row, you have a chance to see orcas off West Seattle – Kersti Muul from Salish Wildlife Watch says whales are southbound, south of the Bainbridge-Seattle ferry lanes. Let us know if you see them!

10:32 AM: In addition to the updates in comments (thank you!), Donna Sandstrom from The Whale Trail called to say they’re between Blake and Vashon, visible through binoculars.

It seems they are visiting us more this year (or I’m more observant because I have nothing else going on due to the pandemic!) I know they follow their food source. Is this positive behavior for their survival? Or are they moving trying to find food? (Obviously a question for the experts and WSB!)

They are chasing the chum salmon  runs that happen this time of year.Happens every year, they come down from late September-January off and on.

Watching 5-6 mid-channel just about due west of Lincoln Park at 10:24.  Visible to the naked eye, but better with binoculars.

The Bremerton ferry at south tip of Bainbridge has stopped moving. Good clue to look around the ferry with binoculars.

  • Kersti Muul November 28, 2020 (11:07 am)

They are right in front of my ferry at the Fauntleroy terminal super close to West Seattle side

Which direction are they headed in now? Would like to go see and not sure if I should go towards alki or lincoln park.

The one that I’m able to spot are very close to the Vashon side of the sound and are only visible with binoculars. They are southbound close to Maury  Island or perhaps already there.

  • High Point November 28, 2020 (8:01 pm)

Around 12:30pm we could see them direct south of Three Tree Point along the shoreline of Maury Island. Looked like there were at least 6 or 7, probably more. A sail boat got a really close view. Spouts were viewable by eye but binoculars were needed to see the orcas.

Sorry, comment time is over.
