WEST SEATTLE BEACHES: Low-low tides today through Monday

(WSB photo, low-low tide last month)

Today is the first of four days that’ll bring very low tides (we like to call them “low-low tides”) to local shores – -3.0 feet at 11:14 am today, -3.4 at 11:56 am Saturday, -3.2 at 12:39 pm Sunday, and -2.8 at 1:23 pm Monday. If you go to the beach, tread lightly – the low-low tide leaves many creatures vulnerable. Best way to admire is from a distance – you can walk Alki and marvel at how far out the water recedes, for example.

Thank you for taking that angle on the low tides and increasing awareness of protecting the tidal creatures.  I know that low tides call people out to experience them, I’ve done it, but with increasing awareness of the destruction of many feet, hopefully people will be more sensitive and consider how they enjoy the low tide.

THANK YOU to all the dog walkers at Lincoln Park that leashed their dogs this morning. I saw two types of sea stars out on Vashon last week and it was a very welcomed sight.  We’re so lucky to experience the type of wildlife we have in this region. Yesterday I was driving on Marginal Way and a Bald Eagle flew RIGHT OVER my car and over the intersection carrying a rat in his talons. I took that as a very good omen! Thanks for your wildlife postings WSB.  Always appreciated.

Thank you for this conservation-minded message! The Seattle Aquarium Beach Naturalists will not be out on beaches (yet) as usual for these low-low tides, but please visit their website for some great resources, including a printable field guide and a short video outlining best practices for visiting with our intertidal underwater neighbors (great to watch with kiddos!) https://www.seattleaquarium.org/beach-naturalist-program

Thanks for including the Beach Naturalist information. It’s a great program and great place to learn about the AMAZING variety of creatures that we live with, like the Shaggy Mouse Nudibranch!

Hello!! Thank you for your information. How long does the low low tide last? For example, today it starts at 11:56. At what time does the sea come back to its normal tide?Thank you!!

If you follow the link in the story, you’ll see the tide chart. The moment of lowest tide is just that – a moment – then the tide starts flowing back in, gradually, until it peaks at the next high tide, and then it starts receding again …

Sorry, comment time is over.
