TRAFFIC/TRANSIT TODAY: Monday watch, 7th week of West Seattle Bridge closure

5:53 AM: 42nd morning without the high-rise West Seattle Bridge. Here are the cameras for the restricted-access low bridge (where SPD enforcement continues) and the 5-way intersection west of it:

For general traffic, the main route across the Duwamish River is the 1st Avenue South Bridge (map). To get to I-5, exit onto Michigan at the bridge’s north end. Here are cameras for the bridge and Michigan east of it:

You can also cross the Duwamish River via the South Park Bridge (map), which puts you on East Marginal Way. Here’s the South Park camera:

Check the @SDOTBridges Twitter feed to see if a bridge is opening for marine traffic.

Sounds like it’s gonna be a good day! Can’t wait to have my house a classroom again. Yay.

Bus at maximum. Assuming this bus got cleaned over night than someone was very quick to mess it up again. Back area had seats covered in something sticky and trash on the ground on top of no where to sit more than 3 feet away from others and a lot of people without masks.

When’s the next bridge update? And how do we join the group that is going to put pressure on the politicians for urgency? All SDOT projects need to be put on hold for the WSB!

What group is going to put pressure on politicians the year after an election?

      • WSB May 4, 2020 (10:29 am)

This isn’t “the year after an election” for everyone. Mayor’s up for election next year. Anyway, I assume you are referring to West Seattle Bridge Now; our story and other coverage (including the Friday bridge updates) are easily findable in our archive section

Not sure if you or Phil wants to cross post on NextDoor, but this question has come up there as well.  Doesn’t seem the message is out completely….

We don’t use that platform, whose owners are hostile to journalists.

Uh, no, Derek. All SDOT projects don’t need to be put on hold. However, you very well may need to be very, very patient, because the a repaired, or new bridge, will take many, many, many years.

“All SDOT projects need to be put on hold for the WSB!” Delaying all other projects in the entire City of Seattle to open the WSB a month or two early is poor decision making.

This failure isn’t like putting two bones back together. Structural engineers have to study the section over time to see how the faults are growing. Then modelling has to be generated. Civil engineers around the country will study the model and determine the problems. This is not a minor failure nor are the repairs. Just wait for the engineering survey.

Didn’t we have a local politician(s) who proposed putting all transportation projects on hold after holding their breath until they turned blue if they didn’t get their way? I’d have preferred purple.

Sorry, comment time is over.
