MAILBOX ALERT: West Seattle Junction drive-up/ride-up box out of service again

3:27 PM SUNDAY: If you have something to put in the mail, you won’t be able to use the drive-up/ride-up box outside the West Seattle Junction Post Office for a few days. We don’t know the backstory, nor do we know when it went out of service, but the sign on the side says “lock replacement Monday or Tuesday.” So we’ll check back. (Thanks to Lora for the photo/tip.)

10:08 AM MONDAY: We just went over to check – back in service already.

I wonder how much trouble we would get into with the feds if we installed bollards on all four corners to protect it from cars ?

  • Kc April 7, 2019 (4:15 pm)

Bollards would be great 8 bags of concrete donated by a local lumber yard at moonlight the only question would be who did it… but who would care Done. Except this is a lock issue not a wayward driver. So says the note

Aside from the lock issue, the box is beat up from being hit. Bollards are still warranted.

The sign implies the lock is the problem. I think the last time was the same thing and someone apparently had lost the key. Maybe the same thing this time, or someone broke it trying to steal the contents.

Found it closed around 11am on Saturday.  I wasn’t trying to use it but I did grab a letter from a disabled senior citizen who was trying to use the box and brought it inside for him.

I would have thought by 2019 we would have figured out the mailbox.

You would think in 2019 there would be much less use for a drive-up mail box in the first place. Never understood the reason it’s there at all actually… The extremely few times I need to mail something I have both the time and energy to walk the 30 feet inside, or use the mail box closest to my house.

For the love of Cliff Claven can we either have a drop box that no one screws with, or keep the lobby open 24 hours?  This is why we can’t have nice things West Seattle…..

I agree with Swede and yes I understand there are people who can not walk very good or at all for whatever reasons so a drive up is convenient for them but should they really be driving?Lets look around for cars with USPS blue on the bumpers and fenders…  or let’s just put that thing out of its misery and get rid of it.

Momosmon, you don’t seem to understand that difficulty walking does not mean an inability to drive,. And does not mean the people who need the drive up  are senior citizens as your ageist comment is implying.

    • momosmom April 8, 2019 (10:24 am)

AA, My apologies but I did not mean it in that manner, I myself am  close to being a Senior (63yrs) or wait maybe I am already a Senior ha, ha! it just seems there is way too much money spent on that drive-up box not to mention all the damage and insurance claims because of that box…put it out of its misery.

    They need a hide-a-key

I’d say the comments for announcements of new pizza places and the “out of order” mailboxgives me a chuckle every single time.  πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Parking is a major obstacle to using the indoor mailbox not the unwillingness to walk. I really appreciate the convenience of the drive up, drop off box. I have a handicap placard  but there is only one space for those of us in need and often occupied. Thank you for keeping the box!Grateful

Good news, it’s back in service already (as just updated above).

Sorry, comment time is over.
