Person found dead on Alki Beach

Thanks for the texts about the Medical Examiner and police near 55th/Alki earlier this morning, after someone was found dead on the beach. The scene was cleared by the time we got there but we’ve since been able to confirm with police that they believe this was a death by suicide. No other details except that there was an initial medical call to the area at 6:25 am.

As always, when we report a case of suicide, we include a reminder that the Crisis Clinic has a 24-hour hotline, 206-461-3222.

If you are having thoughts of suicide and would prefer to chat  online with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline rather than speak on the phone you can go to https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/chat/.  And if you’d prefer to text then text 741741 and type “Home.”

Suicide’s the 2nd leading cause of death for people 15-34.  Sadly it doesn’t get enough attention by medical professionals or the media, it’s still a very taboo subject even in 2018, which is costing millions of lives. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1-800-273-8255, if you’re in crisis and need help, don’t hesitate to call

When I walked by at @7:45 police and ME were there. There was also a kayak next to the body -related?

    • Colin August 13, 2018 (3:52 pm)

I saw them this morning while they were pulling the body to shore. I believe they found the body in the kayak out in the water, but I had not seen the kayak in the water prior. This was right around 6:45 am or so.

No idea. Don’t know anything but what we wrote above. The ME might eventually release the name/age/cause of death … or might not … we check their daily afternoon media releases, and there’s nothing on today’s. – TR

I was riding my bike this am and saw the man in his kayak on the beach. I asked the officer if he was ok? He said no. I havent stoped thinking about him all day.  Wondering……Did he have a heart attack out on the water? This saddens me to no end, to hear he may have taken his own life. Mental illness is real… We have to take the time to listen to people… I mean really listen. Do what ever we can to help them understand they are not alone and there is help.  I am so sorry this has happened, RIP

      Can you describe the kayak?

      • Colin August 14, 2018 (6:36 am)

It was a gray/silver kayak. Looked like it could have been inflatable but I couldn’t tell for sure.

I saw it on a morning walk. It looked like a canoe, not a kyak

I was the 3rd person to arrive at the scene along with another friend. I went to help the first person who is the guy that rents out the paddle boards. He had already pulled the body out of the water on the kayak. It wasn’t until I was up close that I saw he had what looked like a bullet wound in the head. We presumed he had shot himself. There was nothing we could do to help him as he was already dead. The police came very soon after and my friend and I left. I keep replaying both how the poor guy who was dead looked and also how distressed the paddle board rental guy was. In retrospect it was really him that needed help. If you’re passing by and you see him please give him a friendly smile. He has long hair and is Spanish as a first language. He struck me as one of life’s good people.

Sorry, comment time is over.
