West Seattle weekend scene: C & P Coffee party pours a cup of gratitude

Pete and Cameron Moores, proprietors of C & P Coffee Company (5612 California SW; WSB sponsor), presided over a party Sunday – to say “thank you.”

Signs like that one in the shop invited customers to celebrate the coffee house’s future, secured back in March when the couple bought it from their longtime landlords, who had put it on the market in January, promoted as a “terrific development opportunity.” Crowdfunding and more ensued, culminating in the $1,265,000 purchase. Sunday’s celebration included cake, the Marination food truck, and even a poem:

That was a collaboration between poets who have participated in PoetryBridge readings, among the many regular events at C & P (you can see their calendar here). We stopped by late in the party, so we asked Cameron if we’d missed any big announcements; no, she said, it was just all about the gratitude

TRAFFIC ALERT: Another crash at Highland Park’s problem intersection

(WSB photo)

No major injuries but two cars are damaged after colliding at Highland Park Way and Holden. The Highland Park Action Committee continues trying to get traffic calming for this intersection and took a mayoral assistant on a walking tour earlier this week for a firsthand look.

West Seattle weekend scene: Early solstice-sunset watch with Alice Enevoldsen

Though the summer solstice isn’t until Thursday, Solstice Park still provided a sunset show when NASA Solar System Ambassador Alice Enevoldsen held her quarterly gathering a few days early.

As Alice explained on Saturday night, the sunset time only varies a few seconds from day to day this time of year, so the special path at the top of the park still lined up with the setting sun. Scott Scowcroft condensed that part of the viewing into this short video:

As shown here last night, though, the most dramatic feature of last night’s sunset was the cloud configuration just afterward:

Summer officially arrives at 3:07 am Thursday (June 21st). Alice had to bump up her quarterly viewing because of a scheduling conflict this time, but watch for word of her next sunset event greeting the arrival of fall!

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Stolen black Chrysler 300; car prowls

Two Crime Watch reader reports:

STOLEN CAR: A reward is offered:

I know it’s a long shot but please keep your eyes out- My husband’s car was stolen last night from our street in West Seattle (SW 40th Ave and SW Oregon). It’s a black Chrysler 300 with Iowa plates 599 WWI. Please contact 515-402-9823 with information.

And if you see it, call 911 first.

CAR PROWLS: From Sharon:

> Several cars on 34th Avenue SW, between Findley and Juneau, were broken into sometime between 6pm and midnight (Friday, 6/15). Tools and glove box contents were stolen. Be on the alert for car prowlers in the area. Police report has been filed.

READER REPORT: Close call in Fauntleroy Park

The photo and report are from Mara:

Today my husband and I went into Fauntleroy Park and were enjoying our packed lunch along one of the trails and sat on one of the park-made platforms. There is a breeze going thru the trees and didn’t seem like much wind really. Then we heard cracking start, and lo and behold, a tree top was heading our way! We jumped up and it didn’t get near us thankfully. But the entire top of a tree came down! Be careful – the trees are dry and we saw bigger branches on the trails as we headed back that were not there beforehand.

It indeed doesn’t take a windstorm to bring down a tree limb – hot, dry weather (today got into the upper 80s) can do it too, according to a variety of references we found like this one.

If you haven’t been yet, there’s still time to get over to the center at 26th/Barton … this is scheduled to continue until 5 pm.

 |   Utilities | West Seattle news

1:28 PM: Thanks for the tip – City Light says more than 80 homes lost power at midmorning on west Charlestown Hill. “Equipment failure” is listed as the cause, and the restoration estimate is 4:18 pm – could be sooner, could be later.

3:10 PM: A few homes have their power back – City Light’s map has downsized the outage to 69, though it’s also changed the cause to “investigating.”

5:48 PM: Outage over since last we checked, per SCL map.

The ‘prank’ that wasn’t so funny: Best of Hands Barrelhouse asking for help after theft left iconic cow damaged

(WSB photo, May)

One month ago, we reassured you that the future Best of Hands Barrelhouse would be keeping the iconic cow atop its building at 35th and Webster, while warning that it might disappear for a while for some sprucing-up. Part of its absence was unplanned, the Best of Hands crew says – it was briefly cownapped last week and taken to Chief Sealth International High School as what they say was a “senior prank.” They got it back but not without complications, according to this open letter they sent us today:

While we appreciate a good senior prank as well as the next person, I’m reaching out to the community here because in the process of stealing the cow, the kids broke one of the legs. Those who were involved with the prank also scaled our brand new electrical install in order to get on the roof (we now need to inspect this for any damage they may have caused). As many in this community know, we have spent over a year and tens of thousands of dollars bringing the iconic building up to code so that it can house a new endeavor. The actions of these individuals is highly disappointing, as it shows a complete disrespect for personal property, private property, and the West Seattle community at large. To add insult to injury, we had just finished cleaning and re-painting the cow the Monday before she was stolen. We will now have to take hours out of our busy schedules to do so again.

We know people have information about who is responsible for the prank, and we are asking them to step forward so we can hold the pranksters to account for their actions. If nobody comes forward, we will be getting the police involved. As for what the consequences should be for damaging our property and our landlord’s property (Clearview Eye & Laser), we have discussed compensation for the broken leg (and anything else that may have been damaged) and community service. We understand that these students will be graduating on Thursday, and would like to have a resolution before then. If college-bound, I don’t think dodging this responsibility will look good to the schools these individuals have applied to/been accepted to, as in this day and age, many colleges will revoke acceptance based on poor 4th quarter performance and extenuating circumstances.

We thank you for your time and help.

Sincerely,
Best of Hands Barrelhouse

UPDATE: Early-morning police activity

12:28 AM: Two things:

*If you heard “gunshots or fireworks?” noise around midnight, according to police radio communication, it was fireworks, 24th/Holden vicinity.

*Thanks for all the tips about a search in northeast Arbor Heights. We know it involves both KCSO and SPD but we’re not sure yet what started it, so we’re heading over to see what we can find out.

1 AM UPDATE: We have found multiple officers on 28th and 30th south of Roxbury. Two said the search was related to a convenience-store robbery but wouldn’t/couldn’t say where. We have gone by several stores, no obvious signs of trouble. A K9 team was out on 28th when we went through. That’s all we have – no descriptions of who’s being sought.

2:50 AM: Unrelated incident, so far as we know, but it’s still early-morning police activity, so we’re adding … the sirens in south West Seattle this time are because police are now looking for a burglary suspect in South Delridge. We missed the exact address but one of the containment points is 18th/Henderson. The description of the suspect so far is black, male, 6’2″, 220 pounds, no shirt, no shoes, possibly bleeding from broken window glass.

3:29 AM: Still searching.

5:34 PM UPDATE: KCSO spokesperson Sgt. Ryan Abbott tells us this started as a shoplifting attempt by three juveniles at the 28th/Roxbury 76 station minimart. They tried to steal some candy; “When they were stopped by the clerk, one of them produced a handgun and threatened to shoot the clerk.” The search never did turn them up.

CRIME WATCH: Student robbed; white Jeep stolen (update – found!); package taken

Three West Seattle Crime Watch reports tonight:

STUDENT ROBBED: Thanks to the parent who forwarded the letter sent tonight to Chief Sealth International High School and Denny International Middle School families, about a crime that happened Thursday and was reported Friday:

We would like to let you know about an incident that occurred in the Sealth/Denny neighborhood that was brought to our attention yesterday. It occurred on Thursday afternoon at approximately 2:00 PM when a Sealth student was on his way home and was approached in a threatening manner by two youth from another school. They robbed him of his cell phone and made him take off his shoes but did not take them. The student and his parent reported the incident to the school yesterday morning and the police were called. They took the report and will follow up with an investigation.

No other details – the rest of the note to families consists of safety tips. We’ll be following up with police.

JEEP CHEROKEE STOLEN: From Kala:

My Jeep was stolen in West Seattle last night around 11 pm near South Seattle College. I am out of country for two more days, I have friends and family looking out and contacted the police but need all the help I can get! It is a white ’92 Jeep Cherokee, I have attached a recent photo.

I have various things in the Jeep, clothing, camping items, etc., but not too worried about those. All paperwork is in the Jeep (not smart on my side). Hopefully can find in one piece.

(Update: Plate BBA7439 … Monday update: Found in Burien.)

PACKAGE TAKEN: Security video from the 6700 block of Beach Drive:

The sender says they have verified that this was not a retrieved misdelivery. If you recognize the person in the video, the police report # is 18-218524.

ROXHILL/HUGHES PLAYGROUND: Moving a mountain … of wood chips

 |   Sunrise Heights | West Seattle news | West Seattle schools

Thanks to Jenny Rose Ryan from Friends of Roxhill Elementary for the photos and update from today’s wood-chip work party, two weeks after volunteers built the new community-powered playground at Roxhill’s future home, EC Hughes Elementary:

Thanks to about 30 volunteers, we made great progress moving this giant pile of wood chips underneath our new playground for Roxhill Elementary at E.C. Hughes. There’s still a bit of work to be done to prep the other half for the safety surface, so we did what we could. We are so grateful for neighbors, friends and community members who came out to chip in.

WHALE-WATCHING UPDATE: Now off Alki Beach

This morning’s sighting post was a long time ago so we’re starting a new one – multiple reports of orcas visible off Alki Beach right now. While one report has them around 58th and Alki, they’re also reported to be heading north.

Celebrations of life for Mark ‘Monk’ Hubbard next Friday

Last weekend brought the shocking news of West Seattle-based skatepark legend Mark “Monk” Hubbard‘s untimely death. This weekend, his family sends word of memorial plans:

In celebration of Mark “Monk” Hubbard, his friends and family want everyone around the world who’ve been impacted by Mark’s life and work to head to their local skatepark on Friday, June 22nd to skate, picnic and remember.

For those of you who can attend our local celebration, we will be at the Delridge Community Center & Skatepark 3-6 pm. Please bring your own blanket, food basket, and favorite stories.

Delridge is one of the many skateparks designed/built by Mark Hubbard’s firm Grindline. He was 47 years old.

CLOSURE ALERT: Southbound 99 to be closed part of next weekend

Looking ahead to next weekend, one major closure you might want to plan for if you’re heading off-peninsula: Southbound Highway 99 is scheduled for a full closure from 9 pm next Friday night (June 22nd) until 6 am next Sunday (June 24th), between Battery Street and Lander Street (functionally, that means all the way to the West Seattle Bridge), as part of tunnel-related work. No overlapping major I-5 closures that weekend, according to the WSDOT list.

VIDEO, PHOTOS: Morgan Junction Community Festival 2018, as it happened

(SEE THE FESTIVAL SCHEDULE – entertainment, activities – here)

11:06 AM: Perfect almost-summer day at the Morgan Junction Community Festival, presented by the Morgan Community Association, spread across multiple spots in and around Morgan Junction Park (west side of California, just north of Fauntleroy)! The performances have begun:

The food vendors are up and running – The Tamale Guy, Jones BBQ, and Sweet Bumpas Ice Cream are in the lot on the north side of Beveridge Place Pub:

And kitty corner from the park, West Seattle Thriftway (WSB sponsor) is serving up a benefit barbecue with proceeds going to keep the festival free and fun.

While you’re wandering, be sure to see the vendors and community groups behind Whisky West (WSB sponsor) and Zeeks Pizza:

Along with local business, a few local departments/agencies are there – Sound Transit (got questions about West Seattle light rail?) and the Department of Neighborhoods (kicking off this year’s Your Voice, Your Choice voting – more on that post-festival). In the heart of the park right now – Bubbleman!

Lots of ways to participate, not just watch – like chalk art:

We’re in a row of booths just north of the park, with the West Seattle Timebank, Emergency Communication Hubs, and kids’ arts and crafts. The festival’s on until 4 pm – more coverage to come!

12:19 PM: Second musical act of the festival!

Here again is the schedule for the day. Many activities are continuous – face-painting, kids’ art, etc. – so no matter what time you drop by, you’ll find something happening. You’ll also find public-safety personnel, including SPD:

At left is the Southwest Precinct’s longtime second-in-command, Operations Lt. Ron Smith, who’s on his farewell tour of festivals – he’s retiring at month’s end. On the south edge of the park, artist Desmond Hansen started his mural-painting early and has drawn an audience:

1:08 PM: Speaking of painting, if you’d rather do it than watch, one of this festival’s unique activities is under way – the Splatter of Morgan:

You can come down and blast paint at the canvas draping the fence at the future Morgan Junction Park addition, just north of where we are. Another unique activity, the Bark of Morgan dog parade and contests, is coming up at 2 pm. Meantime, another SPD delegation:

1:21 PM: Every year we’ve boothed at festivals, we’ve had a standing offer: Candidates who stop by get photographed. First candidate of the year, Shannon Braddock, who’s running for the open 34th District State Senate seat, just stopped by:

She and other candidates will be at the <strong>West Seattle Democratic Women‘s forum June 18th and the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce‘s forum later in the summer (date to be announced). Speaking of politics, the festival’s emcee, MoCA vice president Phil Tavel, confirms he’s considering running for City Council again next year (he finished third in the crowded August 2015 primary).

2:14 PM: We’ve had a city official visit too, interim Neighborhoods director Andres Mantilla (a West Seattleite):

And a small but spirited dog parade has gone by:

More live music right now, too – Deal is onstage.

Festival’s on until 4 if you haven’t been here yet!

2:37 PM: The Tamale Guy is sold out of tamales. And the SFD engine that was here, 32, just had to leave on a call, minutes after we snapped a photo:

Medical call, according to Real-Time 911. Speaking of medical, while you’re here you can find out about Good Med Direct Primary Care (WSB sponsor):

Drs. Ryan Campbell and Wendy Hueners can tell you all about their unique model for keeping you healthy. You’ll find them and other local businesses, organizations, etc., behind Whisky West/Zeeks. In the park, meantime, we looked in again on muralist Desmond Hansen:

Thanks yet again to all the kind people who’ve stopped by to say hi and thank us for our work – community collaboration has been what WSB’s been about for more than a decade now, and we appreciate the continuing tips, questions, suggestions … westseattleblog@gmail.com, or text/voice 206-293-6302 any time.

3:30 PM: Final half-hour for the festival. Gary Benson is onstage – mellow music for a mellow afternoon.

Also just talked with a couple more people who stopped by – Donna Sandstrom from The Whale Trail, who is on the governor’s new task force about orcas, saying it’s time for bold action to try to save the Southern Resident Killer Whales; Karimah Edwards from Seattle Parks, telling us they’ve had a good day of talking to people about the future development of Morgan Junction Park’s expansion site to the north. Look for an online survey starting next week, with options for park design and potential elements (we’ll write a separate story when it goes live).

4 PM: The festival’s officially over – but live music will stretch out a little longer; Servants of the Rich missed their slot earlier, getting caught in multiple traffic jams while headed this way from the south, but they’re here now. We’re headed out. Thanks to MoCA and festivalgoers/participants for a great day!

West Seattle whale-watching: Orcas in our area

9:48 AM: Thanks to Kersti Muul for the tip – take your binoculars and look toward Blake Island, where a sizable group of orcas is reported to be passing, southbound!

12:06 PM: They’re still southbound, Kersti reports – and they’re transient orcas. Now off Burien’s Three Tree Point, she says.

7:57 PM: And now they’re northbound, seen passing Alki a short time ago, per comment and e-mail.

CRIME WATCH: Early-morning gunfire? Hear it on security video

One more early-morning incident that woke up more than a few people early today – suspected gunfire heard in South Delridge, Westwood, and as far north as Sunrise Heights. This security video is from a camera near 17th and Cloverdale. We couldn’t find a police report number showing that any evidence of gunfire had been found; if anyone reading this knows of a related report number, the video’s owner was wondering how to call it to police’s attention in case the vehicle seen going by in the background was related. Meantime, just a reminder, if you think you hear gunfire, call 911, because the more calls they get, the more chance they have of figuring out where it happened and if there’s any damage/evidence.
