TRAFFIC/TRANSIT TODAY: Last Friday in August; weekend reminders

(SDOT MAP with travel times/video links; is the ‘low bridge’ closed? LOOK HERE)

(Click any view for a close-up; more cameras on the WSB Traffic page)

6:43 AM: Good morning. We start with a transit cancellation – Metro just announced Route 57 leaving The Junction at 7:06 am is off:

It’s one of three cancellations Metro has texted/tweeted this morning so far, first one in West Seattle.

6:51 AM: Reminders for today and the weekend:

Road-work projects continuing – Fauntleroy/Endolyne Triangle and lower Spokane Street east of the low bridge.

Weekend road closure in West Seattle – Alki/Harbor closes for the Alki Beach 5K, which starts at 9 am Sunday.

Weekend lane closures for Aurora Bridge inspections:

Saturday, Aug. 27 – Two northbound lanes across the Aurora Bridge will be closed from 6 to 11 a.m. One northbound lane will remain open to traffic. All southbound lanes will be open.

Sunday, Aug. 28 – Two southbound lanes across the Aurora Bridge will be closed from 6 to 11 a.m. One southbound lane will remain open to traffic. All northbound lanes will be open.

Also: Two weekend paving projects in Tacoma will reduce lanes – on I-5, and on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge – which could also have an effect on the Fauntleroy-Southworth ferry runs, WSDOT warns. Here’s the full alert.

6:57 AM: Another cancellation just texted/tweeted:

Metro says it’s a hiring issue – as explained in our traffic/transit coverage yesterday.

7:10 AM: And now, a text/tweet announcement that the previously mentioned cancellation has been canceled – so the run is back ON:

7:28 AM: Ten minutes warning for this one:

8:59 AM: We’ve been covering the Triangle gas leak separately; the response should be winding down now.

Wow. Two in a row. Metro is back in fine form. Hope no one living in Admiral needed to get to work this morning.

So now we have 2 of 5 total Metro cancellations in West Seattle.  We certainly seem to continue to suffer a disproportionate percentage of cancellations.

I’ve still never felt like I’ve received a sufficient response  from Metro as to why. Especially frustrating given how much money I feel I pay for such inadequate service.

Well, it was two in a row, and then they canceled the second cancellation. I’ve never seen a canceled cancellation announcement until this week (this is the second such “never mind” in the past few days).

Why is it always the 57, especially given that it’s the only bus for people on Genessee Hill?

  • Laura August 26, 2016 (7:47 am)

Seriously, people, PLEASE complain to Metro and complain to our King County reps. Maybe no one can do anything but  not having our voices heard will certainly get us nowhere.  Especially those of us who have only ONE choice of routes, like deep in the heart of the 57. We need to all be a squeaky wheel so Metro can sure in the future we’re not stuck with temp drivers and there are enough backup drivers who know the route and can sub in. Two canceled 57s is HALF our morning buses. How is that even an acceptable option? I ask again–and again and again–would they do that to the C or the 120?

Yes, I think people that rely on this route should raise their voices.  I am not familiar with these frequently cancelled routes.  But yes, the 120 does seems to come ALL the time.  (especially when you’re waiting downtown for a 125, and you watch the 120 come by a few times before the 125 ever shows up).

However, even though the 120 is so frequent, it is well-used it seems.  My spouse was passed by 2 120’s headed downtown the other morning. Those 2 didn’t stop to pick him up because they were full….

My #57 (leaving California/Admiral at 6:55) was half empty today, again.

  • Olivist August 26, 2016 (8:03 am)

My comment was no sufficient response received from Metro. As your link shows, they’ve been using the same “ramp up on hiring” excuse for an excuse for 10 months now.

Oh, and that 2nd 57 cancellation is 2 in a row for that route  something they are quoted as stating they “don’t” do.

It’s time to vote with your walket closed.

911 log seems to list major gas leak. is it at the YMCA site?

  • Busless in West Seattle August 26, 2016 (9:16 am)

Taco Time must be a Sponsor of SDOT as the camera has their sign prominently displayed

    • WSB August 26, 2016 (9:18 am)

The cameras change often. I think in this case they were trying to see if the gas-leak road closures were within view (they weren’t) … that camera is usually pointed closer to the bridge entrance, which is why it’s in the regular lineup. – TR

I remember the shortage of drivers and the ramp up of hiring as the excuse for the problems about 10 months ago; then those missed route issues seemed to clear up, only to just recently rear their heads again.  I’m wondering if its not just a case of retiring long term drivers, but also newer drivers that can’t/don’t want to deal with our horrendous traffic conditions.

I don’t take Route #57, but it does seem to get canceled a lot.  I’m sure lots of people with jobs have given up depending on the bus and switched to alternative methods of transportation.   Given how Metro works, their next step will be to cancel the route for “lack of ridership”.   That’s what happened to us in Arbor Heights.

Sorry, comment time is over.
