2:31 PM: Seattle Fire is responding to a car-fire call listed as Delridge/West Marginal. We’re getting multiple reports that it’s generating a big column of smoke. We’re on the way to check it out.

2:57 PM UPDATE: A BMW is what caught fire and burned. Both people inside got out OK. (Photo added above.) SFD says the occupants thought it might have been an electrical fire.

12:40 PM MONDAY: The diving student pulled from the water near Seacrest on Sunday afternoon did not survive. We’ve just learned that from the Seattle Police report on the incident; as we had noted in an update on the original coverage this morning, Harborview Medical Center said the woman’s family had exercised its right to ask the hospital not to release information, but the police report says the woman, in her early 20s but not yet publicly identified, was declared dead less than two hours after she was rescued. The report includes more information on what happened: Police spoke with the instructor, who, according to the report:
… relayed that he was leading a scuba class with three student divers. (He) told us that once he realized visibility under water was very poor, he made the decision to surface and bring all three student divers back up. (He) signaled and said that all three divers gave a thumbs-up, saying that they understood and would also be resurfacing. Upon reaching the surface, (the instructor) counted only two of the students but could not locate the third. The third student was (the victim). The instructor said that they made it back into shore and two of the other divers got new oxygen tanks to go locate (the victim … while someone) called 911.
The report says that after the rescue operation was under way, a civilian diver found the missing diver in 69 feet of water (yesterday’s information had said it was about 40). She was brought to the surface at about 1:05 pm and CPR began; as noted in our coverage, she was rushed to Harborview right about then in Seattle Fire Medic (Unit) 32. The report says she was declared dead at 2:37 pm.
Our archives show that this is the first diver death in the Seacrest area in four and a half years; the previous one also involved a diver who got into trouble during a class and on a Sunday, 29-year-old Tareq Saade. He was described in our coverage of that incident as having been part of an “advanced dive class.” In yesterday’s incident, according to the police report, another diver in the class told officers that it was their second day of instruction.
11:35 PM TUESDAY: The King County Medical Examiner has identified the diver who died as 22-year-old Patricia Flores-Perez. Her cause of death is listed as accidental drowning.
Thanks to Holy Rosary School for sending photos from this morning’s start of the new school year. As reported over the weekend, and mentioned again in today’s traffic/transit watch, most parochial schools start before the public schools and secular independent schools. HRS sent the photos to share their excitement for the new school year, including, below “some parents seeing our newest Gators starting Kindergarten!”
Also an early reminder from HRS: “A beloved tradition at Holy Rosary that happens in the beginning of the school year is our upcoming festival, WestFest, September 16th & 17th, open to the community.”
Even if you don’t have kid(s) in Seattle Public Schools, you need to remember that schedules are changing when classes start on September 7th. The schedule changes will bring changes in walking, riding, and driving patterns around local SPS campuses. (If you’re new and not sure where the schools are, here’s the districtwide map.)
As we reported back in November – with one big change made public in June – some of the changes are small. More of them are not.

7:02 AM: Good morning – no incidents reported in/from West Seattle so far.
BACK TO SCHOOL: Holy Rosary (4142 42nd SW) starts today, and it’s the first full week for Seattle Lutheran High School (4100 SW Genesee), which started last Friday. Here’s our weekend report on this week’s other starts.
SCHOOL BUS DRIVER PREPS: Thanks to Al for the tip – starting tomorrow, bus drivers for Seattle Public Schools will be out practicing their routes.
ROAD WORK REMINDER: As previewed last night, the Spokane Street paving/safety project – mostly east of the low bridge – continues this week, and includes ongoing bicycle/pedestrian-path detours.
8:25 AM: Couple of Seattle Fire responses on arterials right now – might or might not affect your commute, but we’ll mention them anyway: There’s a medical response at Delridge/Thistle, and a “bark fire” response in the 6500 block of 35th SW, which would be south of Morgan. Each has just one engine assigned, so not major.
8:47 AM: Just got a text about a crash on the eastbound West Seattle Bridge near the 4th Avenue exit – but SDOT says via Twitter that it’s already cleared. No injuries, apparently, as SFD was not dispatched – no callout on the 911 log.

I found some opened packages from ebay and Amazon in a parking garage in the Jefferson Square building. Just in case above reported their stuff stolen.
Seems to be addressed to a Spencer (last name starts with S.) on Fauntleroy in an apartment. And a Janessa (different last name starting with S.) also on Fauntleroy in an apartment … And one to a Mike (last name starting with V), on Fauntleroy.
Unfortunately they’re all empty minus packing slips – which I picked up to try to find email/ phone numbers to these people and have a few.

Congratulations to Rachel Strauss! The photo and report are from the West Seattle Women’s Golf Club:
Rachel Strauss is the 2016 Club Champion of the West Seattle Women’s Golf Club. In the annual two-day tournament at West Seattle Golf Course held August 22 and 23, Rachel posted a low gross score of 167 to take the title for the second year in a row.
In defending her title, this marks the 18th time in 24 years that Rachel has won the West Seattle Women’s Club championship. She first won the title in 1992 and had a 6-year run from 1992 to 1997 as well as a 7-year run from 1999 to 2005.
Rachel is also the 2016 winner of the Greater Seattle Women’s Public Golf Association City Championship tournament held earlier this month at Willows Run Golf Course.
Rachel is a long time resident of West Seattle.

Organizers say this is not only our area’s first festival celebrating Central American culture, but the first one in our state, and they hope to do it again next year.
Tomorrow will be the start of the fourth week of work on SDOT’s lower Spokane Street project – happening mostly east of the “low bridge” – which the city says will “repave, reconstruct sidewalks and curb ramps, and make other improvements along SW Spokane Street from SW Klickitat Way to East Marginal Way S to improve safety for all users.” Below are key points from the overview of what’s planned this week, including continued detours for people on bikes and on foot:

12:32 PM: Thanks for the tips – a Seattle Fire “salt water rescue” response is arriving in the Seacrest vicinity. Via scanner, we’re hearing a report of a diver in distress. More to come.
12:40 PM: Divers have been called in to search for the person who is reported to be missing. An SFD fireboat is on the scene too.
12:49 PM: We’ve just arrived in the area – lots of SFD and SPD vehicles on Harbor between Seacrest and Salty’s, so please avoid the area.
A Coast Guard helicopter has just arrived, flying low, to help.
1 PM: Via scanner, there is a report the victim has been recovered. No word on her condition.
No word on her condition. She is being taken to Medic 32.
1:08 PM: A tweet from SFD describes her as in “critical condition.” We have a photographer on the shore who says that SFD’s public-information officer will be briefing media shortly.
1:22 PM: SFD spokesperson Capt. Shata Stephenson says the diver is in her 20s. She was part of a class when she became disoriented and was lost in about 40 feet of water. She had been missing for about half an hour before SFD divers found her and brought her up. Another diver who was apparently helping is being evaluated by medics.
3:15 PM: No new information since the diver was rushed to Harborview Medical Center by Medic 32. Here’s our video of what Capt. Stephenson said in the aforementioned short briefing onshore:

MONDAY MORNING NOTE: We just checked with Harborview Medical Center’s media-relations department to see if there is any update on the diver’s condition. A hospital spokesperson says her family has chosen to keep that information private, so HMC cannot comment.
ADDED 11:48 AM: The SPD report on the incident says the diver did not survive. Separate update to come.
9:56 AM: Thanks for the tips. In addition to the regular closure of California between Alaska and Oregon for the weekly West Seattle Farmers’ Market, half a block of Alaska west of California is also closed – for a police investigation. It involves someone who died by the bus stop on the south side of Alaska; the Medical Examiner has just arrived for the body. Police will tell us only that the person who died was male. This started with a medical call about an hour ago. That’s all we know so far – more as we get it.
10:08 AM: One thing we can say – this is not a homicide investigation. While the official cause of death and ID will come from the Medical Examiner, they’re already here to remove the body – which wouldn’t happen this soon if it were a crime investigation. The tape has come down and SW Alaska has reopened.

9:16 AM: “Today, you changed a woman’s life.” That’s the message Northwest Hope and Healing executive director Kristina Dahl gave hundreds of runners and walkers as they got ready to head out on this year’s Alki Beach 5K, which started at 9 am.

The nonprofit helps breast- and gynecologic-cancer patients deal with their daily lives as they embark on the fight of their lives. They’re on the course right now – which means Alki/Harbor Avenues are closed for a while – and we’ll be updating.

Back when Seattle City Light started converting streetlights to LEDs, the conversion was initially planned for residential streets only.
Then, the utility decided in 2013 that it would be OK to convert arterial streetlights too, and while the subsequent work began in the north part of the city, this summer, that conversion has been moving full speed ahead in West Seattle.
This past week, we noticed a crew working late at night on the streetlights along the two arterials closest to WSB HQ, California SW and SW Thistle, which are now fully switched over in the Gatewood/Fauntleroy area. So we checked in with Seattle City Light on the conversion status, as well as the reason work was being done at night (while we’re still working at 11:45 pm, seemed a little noisy for residents who sleep more “normal” hours).
Spokesperson Scott Thomsen explained, “Crews have been working nights since June 1. This shift change was done mostly due to Metro trolley routes and to avoid disruption to busy arterial streets when they are most busy and for crew safety.” The night work is expected to end within the next month or so; in the meantime, he says, crews are reminded to be mindful of the noise, but while the “tool they use to loosen and tighten bolts does make a ‘ratcheting’ type noise” – this was the observation made in our note asing about it – “The crew will typically spend less than 10 minutes at any given light.”
Thomsen wasn’t sure how much longer the work, now in the service area south of SW Brandon, will be going on in West Seattle; though we do a fair amount of night driving around West Seattle, we haven’t seen the crews since the work close to our neighborhood around midweek. He says, “The scheduling estimates are not that specific since the crews work in rows across the service territory.”
Around the city: “A little more than 16,000 arterial lights have been converted to LED and our contractor will continue with conversions through December. In 2017, we should complete the arterial conversions.” Checking our archives, this appears to be an acceleration, as it was just last year that West Seattle arterial conversions weren’t expected to start BEFORE 2017.

One more reminder that hundreds of runners and walkers will take over Alki and Harbor Avenues tomorrow morning (Sunday, August 28th), raising money so that Northwest Hope and Healing can continue helping cancer patients. This year’s Alki Beach 5K starts at 61st and Alki at 9 am; if you’re not signed up already, last-minute registration starts by the Bathhouse at 8 am – “runners, walkers, strollers, and friendly leashed dogs are all welcome.” 8 am is also when the course will be closed to traffic, so if you’re going to be in the Alki area tomorrow but not participating, keep that in mind. Looks like perfect running weather – cloudy, not too cold, not too hot.
As first reported here August 2nd, Seahawks star Richard Sherman‘s first Wingstop opened earlier this month at Westwood Village, and a “grand opening” was planned this weekend. We checked back yesterday but aside from some freebies (5 free wings per person until 6 today and again 1-6 tomorrow), they had no official word on if or when Sherman himself might turn up. This afternoon, he did make an appearance, as evidenced by his Instagram selfie published around mid-afternoon.
Meantime, in The Junction …
Musicians from two legendary rock bands visited Thunder Road Guitars (WSB sponsor) on Friday, and TRG’s Instagram feed showed the proof. Cheap Trick was in the area for a concert last night in Auburn.

Five days until the Southwest Design Review Board takes its second Early Design Guidance look at the mixed-use development proposed for 2749 California SW, the current and future site of PCC Natural Markets-West Seattle (WSB sponsor). The “design packet” for Thursday’s 6:30 pm meeting is now available for review – see it here. The project is still in the first phase of Design Review, which deals with size and shape – “massing” – so most of what you’ll see reflects that, rather than full details of what the project eventually will look like. • 2 stories of below grade parking for 40 commercial use stalls and 112 stalls for residential use; access to the parking via the alley.
• Approx 112 residential units over a podium comprised of an approximately 25,000 sf for general sales and services (retail), residential lobby and leasing functions at the ground level.
• Residential outdoor garden terraces and enclosed amenity spaces within the proposal’s three stories above the ground level.
• Existing 11,427 sf surface parking lot to the west of the alley with 31 parking stalls to remain as an accessory use to the proposed general sales and services use (retail).
The meeting, which will include a public-comment period, is at 6:30 pm September 1st at the Sisson Building/Senior Center in The Junction (Oregon/California). If you can’t be there, you can send comments to the project’s assigned city planner – crystal.torres@seattle.gov – who is also the designated recipient for comments involving aspects of the project outside the Design Review scope.

The intense color is from wildfire smoke from the Olympic Peninsula, where four fires continue to burn, according to this update, all blamed on July 21st lightning strikes. Moments after tonight’s sunset, at 8 pm, the National Weather Service “heat advisory” officially expired, after another record-setting day (92 was the high at Sea-Tac Airport, highest on record for this date), and tomorrow’s high is expected to be in the 70s, which is also good for keeping the wildfires from growing.

STORAGE FACILITY HIT AGAIN: Two customers of the Public Storage facility in the 2900 block of SW Avalon Way have e-mailed to let us know burglar(s) have struck there again. One reports, “My unit along with about 15 others were hit overnight or sometime this morning.” She’s on a floor with “secure elevators” but was told that entry was made via emergency-exit stairwells. She says she’s moving her belongings somewhere else. The other victim who contacted us also reported being told that multiple units were broken into. We also reported last Sunday on multiple break-ins at the same facility.
MARINE VIEW DRIVE BURGLARY: Also via e-mail: “Today, around 12:30, my parent’s house in the area of 112th & Marine View Dr SW was broken into. The (burglars), possibly two of them, neighbors think were white males wearing construction vests & driving a dark SUV. Made entry through window & took the stolen items out the garage. Of the stolen items, the biggie was a safe. About 2×2.”

Though Seattle Public Schools, and many independent schools who follow its calendar, don’t start classes until the Wednesday after Labor Day – it’s already back-to-school time for some other local schools:
Local parochial schools usually start and finish earlier, and that’s the case again this year. Checking calendars tonight, we discover that today was the first day of school for Seattle Lutheran High School (4100 SW Genesee). Monday (August 29th) is the first day for Holy Rosary Catholic School (42nd/Genesee); Wednesday (August 31st) is the start of classes for Hope Lutheran School (42nd/Oregon); Thursday (September 1st) is Day 1 for Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School (34th/Myrtle). The only local parochial school that doesn’t start until after Labor Day is Holy Family Bilingual Catholic School (20th/Roxbury), where classes begin on September 6th.
