5:04 PM: We’ve been getting questions about an Alaska Airlines jet flying over West Seattle, accompanied by a smaller plane. It’s a “photo flight,” we’re told via Twitter.

5:16 PM: Added a photo texted by James Tilley, atop this story – thank you!

I love that you guys are always so on top of it. I’m stuck in traffic in Belltown and saw the planes flying, so I immediately thought, “Give it five minutes and I bet WSB will post what’s going on.” Sure enough. :)

Thanks WSB! My kids were outside and saw the planes flying low and close together and you are my go to for the answer!

If not for people calling/texting, we wouldn’t have known … and then thanks again to “Woody’s Aeroimages,” who tagged us on Twitter with info just as we were starting the process of trying to figure out what was going on … TR

They just changed their livery (paint scheme) and I’m so used to seeing flight test planes with photo chase planes it didn’t even cross my mind when this formation flew over me in the Costco parking lot!

Brand new airplane.  Delivered to Alaska Airlines from the Boeing Seattle Delivery Center on 21 Mar.

That’s Clay Lacy’s photoship. It’s a Lear 25 he’s used since the late ’60s to photograph and film, well, everything. Most movies you saw in the ’70s and many from the 80s and 90s used Clay and his aircraft for the video. And it’s still the thing. Lacy Aviation at Boeing Field is the home for it, but it’s used all over the place. Great sighting.

Sorry, comment time is over.
