Highway 99 tunnel-machine update: ‘Taking a break’ for cleanup

(Image downloaded from repair-pit camera after 5 pm today)
22 feet down, 35 to go for the Highway 99 tunnel machine, one day after it broke through the wall of the pit from which its cutterhead will be lifted for repairs. But it’s idle for now, as explained in this late-afternoon update from WSDOT:

After a few days of steady digging, Seattle Tunnel Partners is taking a break from mining so crews can clean out the bottom of the access pit. As expected, a mixture of dirt, concrete and water came into the pit along with the tunneling machine during Thursday’s breakthrough. Crews are using vacuum trucks and other tools to remove the material.

Once Bertha’s cradle is cleaned off, crews will continue moving the machine forward. Bertha must travel an additional 35 feet before STP and manufacturer Hitachi Zosen can begin the disassembly process. Since mining resumed late Tuesday, Bertha has moved nearly 22 feet.

Meantime, the SDOT director’s report we mentioned in an earlier story includes a few related notes. For one, SDOT director Scott Kubly writes, the city’s plan to independently evaluate the Alaskan Way Viaduct is proceeding: “Initial consultant scope, to be completed by early to mid-March, focuses on technical review of 2010-2014 studies of the viaduct and serviceability/safety for use of the viaduct structure.” Later in the report, he writes, “Bridge engineers responded to a report that concrete had fallen off the Alaskan Way Viaduct near Seneca Street. No significant defect was noted and it appears to be the continued minor deterioration of the aging structure.” (The date when this happened wasn’t mentioned.)

So here we are ,so far a year and some months behind schedule. STP already sued for a boatload of money and won. Now the machine has entered repair pit, and almost as it was breaking thru, they announce another delay. Remember when this was proposed? “Seattle Taxpayers will not have to pay cost over runs”. So who does pay? If you look on WSDOT they show in a video how repairs will be made. The interesting part of video is plans to reenforce the drill head and other apparatus. Why wasn’t this stuff specd out originally?

Seems to me they probably could rebuilt (re engineered) the Viaduct with all this money, plus a pizza and a six pack! But Seattle will do most anything to placate Developers. I still don’t think this tunnel was in the best interest of taxpayers.

Of course the viaduct could have been re-built or replaced, but removal has been on the agenda for decades.

I am impressed Bertha cut through the 20 feet of concrete with the broken seal. I think they brought new bearings.

CASE IN POINT LOOK AT THE COWARDLY RATS ON THE CITY CONCIL ABANDING SHIP. WHAT WE NEED IS A BIG CITY MAYOR TO MAKE BIG CITY DECISION’S.. BOTTOM LINE PULL THE PLUG.
BUT THAT IS MY OPINION I COULD BE WRONG. WHAT????

Hey, YOU dig through 22 feet of concrete and then tell me YOU don’t have to take a break!

for those against the tunnel, it is clear we can’t just keep the viaduct (it’s another cypress street viaduct with over 40 fatalities). what are the proposals? people keep mentioning bridges but that too is prone to cost overruns and development snafus. wanna hear ideas.

This town has and probably always will be run by fools. That neither plan for or care about the future. i.e. Building the convention center over i5 making darn sure that there is no way to expand thee major commerce/transportation corridor. Then what is their plan you ask? Well according to WSDOT it is to do nothing. According to them “you can’t build your wayout of congestion”. What if other major metropolitan cities Manhattan or Los Angeles took the same do nothing stance. I think not. Oh and by the way Metro has a new job opening a bathroom czar. The pay is almost 100 grand a year, yet another great use of taxpayer money’s. What a joke!

Great job Bertha! Hope the repairs go smoothly and you are back to work soon!

@Gary Gores – you are simply wrong. There has been NO lawsuit at all. A Dispute Review Board (DRB) is a NON-binding process that attempts to quickly/cheaply resolve these kinds of problems on construction projects. If the parties are unsatisfied with the decision of the DRB, they can still go to court where a BINDING decision will be made. Chill, dude.
    .
@dsa – no, rebuilding the viaduct would have been really, really stupid. The old viaduct would have been torn down for the entirety of constructing the new one – imagine 3 years with no SR99 at all. And we would have – here comes the ugly truth – still had a seismically vulnerable structure (granted, less unsafe than the current viaduct). And a new viaduct would have obliterated the central waterfront, because it would be built according to modern highway/seismic requirements, so it would have been almost twice as large a structure as the current viaduct … but it would have still fed into the same, constrained Battery St. tunnel as now. Again, deal in reality dude … chill … it will all work out.
    .
@WSRob … you crack me up. Go with the all-cap crazy. Rock on.

This is an incredibly important project for Seattle. I am happy to see it progress. Underground transportation will be vital to our infrastructure. We are running out of surface space. If it’s going to start, it’s going to start with this tunnel.
