West Seattle’s precinct to host next Drug Take-Back Day

If you have unwanted, unused, expired prescription medication, best thing to do is get rid of it through a safe, official, no-questions-asked dropoff, and the next one in West Seattle is coming up two weeks from today, 10 am-2 pm on Saturday, October 26th, at Seattle Police’s Southwest Precinct. Operations Lt. Pierre Davis shared the announcement today, and says that if you have items to dispose of, “Simply bring them to the Southwest Precinct during the aforementioned date and time and your precinct desk officer will do the rest.” It’s a matter of safety, convenience, and even ecological prudence – dumping medication down the drain, or flushing it, contaminates the water that is eventually drained back out into Puget Sound (wastewater treatment doesn’t get everything).

And if you don’t want to wait a whole year next time, here is a page that has a list of locations throughout Washington where you can dispose of prescription and over the counter medications:

Thanks, Stef. They actually do these twice a year but yes, it’s great to know about the year-round spots. Bartell Drugs in White Center is the only one in our area. – TR

Ask your physician also. Sometimes they will take medications no longer needed, especially if they were the prescriber.

Some pharmacies offer a service as well but it appears to cost as you buy a mailer and send your stuff off somewhere for disposal.

This is something that probably should be a required service at pharmacies as they are the logical spot to dispose of old and unwanted medicines.

thanks for the heads up. If we’re out of town that weekend can we drop them off earlier, or just wait until the next one.

I don’t believe they’re set up to accept dropoffs in advance – and the front desk isn’t always open. You can wait until the next one or take them any time to Bartell Drugs in White Center, which is a year-round dropoff spot. – TR

Sorry, comment time is over.
