Update: Fire at notorious 36th and Morgan house blamed on ‘spontaneous combustion’

(UPDATED 12:52 AM with fire’s cause)

8:09 PM: Firefighters are just starting to arrive at a possible house fire at 34th and Morgan. They’re reporting smoke and flames. We’re en route. Firefighters say the house is boarded up – so at this point, they are fighting it “defensively,” not going in. Westbound traffic is blocked on SW Morgan, so avoid the area.

(This and next two photos by Tony Bradley)
8:16 PM UPDATE: Our crew arriving at the scene says this is not at 34th despite the radio transmission – it’s at 36th and Morgan, a house that has been the source of trouble in the past.

8:24 PM UPDATE: The fire is in the basement. Though initially, noting it was a boarded-up house, firefighters were not going in, they are now searching and so far have not found anyone inside. Traffic at 35th and Morgan, and westward, is blocked. No report of injuries.

8:37 PM UPDATE: Also no sign that anyone had been inside, we are told at the scene. The Fire Marshal is en route to investigate. Meantime, we finally had a moment to dig up the background – it was last October 4th when we first reported that the house had been boarded up, five weeks after neighbor complaints had come to a head with a stolen-property case.

8:54 PM UPDATE: With the fire basically out, they have finished searching the house. Nobody inside. Neighbors tell us they have seen a couple people coming and going recently, though (which as discussed in comments had been noted even after the house was boarded up). The street is likely to open within 45 minutes or so, and authorities are trying to get Metro buses through, since this is on the 128 route.

9:05 PM: Police have just announced via radio that eastbound SW Morgan is reopening.

12:52 AM: SFD says the fire was started by “spontaneous combustion of improperly-disposed-of stain rags,” with damage totaling $30,000.

Watching fire crews flying in over the bridge right now.

  • wsmama3 May 12, 2013 (8:13 pm)

Neighbor house – what we call “The crack house”. Fire and medic here. Advising to close windows if you are in the neighborhood – home is known as a drug house.

  • Renine S May 12, 2013 (8:15 pm)

It’s not at 34th and Morgan. It’s at 36th or 37th. I live on 34th and Morgan and can see it from my window to the west.

  • EJ May 12, 2013 (8:17 pm)

    FYI, 36th and Morgan

  • ~~Hockeywitch~~ May 12, 2013 (8:20 pm)

I live right across the street… first house on the corner of 36th and Morgan behind the UHaul. The old drug house that people were finding stolen property at is burning… Was napping when the sirens stopped way too close to home… Taking some pictures and video

  • Peeb May 12, 2013 (8:20 pm)

Just saw that this is actually the boarded up crackhouse at 36th and Morgan…this is probably the best possible outcome for that place.

    • WSB May 12, 2013 (8:22 pm)

Yes, our crew noticed that SFD was discussing an erroneous address – we recognized it as soon as we saw it – and we have updated the story. The radio transmissions were wrong. Not a good outcome if anyone is injured or worse in there, however.

  • wsmama3 May 12, 2013 (8:24 pm)

It’s the corner of 36th & Morgan – all traffic being diverted so avoid Morgan hill.

  • Mat May 12, 2013 (8:25 pm)

As soon as the address was restated as 36th and Morgan I figured it was this house. I live near by and see it when I run. That thing can’t get torn down soon enough as far as I’m concerned.

  • TMQ May 12, 2013 (8:33 pm)

On a drizzly night. I sense an insurance claim around twelve hours from now. Agreed WSB–I really hope nobody is found in there.

    • WSB May 12, 2013 (8:36 pm)

Fires do happen in the rain. Co-publisher Patrick Sand, who’s out there now and is our usual first responder for breaking news, can attest to that. The one on 35th in the ground-floor apartment recently was also on a rainy night. Just a datapoint. So far, by the way, no sign of anyone having been in there. And now (scanner discussion) they are trying to correct the live 911 log, which even to this moment still shows “34th/Morgan” as the fire location. – TR

  • wsmama3 May 12, 2013 (8:38 pm)

I called in to 911 and was told I was not the first caller – a taxi driving by called it in too.

It’s supposed to be vacant – BUT we’ve seen people in and out. Less so than a year ago, but still I hope it was empty tonight. There was a lot of smoke & flames and I would not guess anyone could survive that.

  • wsmama3 May 12, 2013 (8:41 pm)

Bus 128 just got sent back down Morgan.

  • Bruce May 12, 2013 (8:41 pm)

Was just at the scene and monitoring the scanner. Fire is under control. They were just making sure the breaker was shut off and clearing out.

    • WSB May 12, 2013 (8:49 pm)

Co-publisher Patrick is still there and we are continuing to update the story. I’ve just added a few more photos courtesy of Tony Bradley, focusing on the firefighters’ work. – TR

Just came back upstairs…they are sending Engines home now.. Channel 7 just left my bldgs parking lot..
They were breaking out the plywood covering the windows and venting.. LOTS of White Smoke.. never black…

  • Morgan May 12, 2013 (8:56 pm)

I wish it had burned to the ground, that house is attracting attention that we don’t want. I expect it was the neighbors that cleaned up the graffiti on it 1-2 weeks ago.

  • X May 12, 2013 (8:58 pm)

Fires don’t just “start” after months and years of being a supposedly vacant house.

Hope it gets razed with the quickness now. Nothing but trouble.

  • wsmama3 May 12, 2013 (9:03 pm)

Neighbors said the power had recently been turned back on (and mail service) for a “vacant” house.

  • Ssf May 12, 2013 (9:10 pm)

I drove by in the last week and noticed someone sitting on the front stairs. Which I thought was interesting because I knew it was a trouble house and that it had been boarded up.

  • ~~Hockeywitch~~ May 12, 2013 (9:12 pm)

I agree Morgan… The house has been nothing but trouble. With the boarded up windows, it was JUST BEGGING for more trouble…Glad no one was hurt… It could have been much worse. Thank you SFD for getting there so fast and doing what you do..

  • ~~Hockeywitch~~ May 12, 2013 (9:27 pm)

Another Engine just left… There is only the one in front of the house and the one on the Morgan side of the house still there now..

  • Watchdog May 12, 2013 (10:26 pm)

Too bad it didn’t burn to the ground. It’s a problem for sure, but lets hope they tear it down now.

And yes, there has been someone inside. There was a plastic chair out front days ago that has moved around the yard.

  • Nitro May 12, 2013 (10:36 pm)

So now what? Will it be allowed to exist in this current state, or will the property owner be required to tear it down due to it being a safety hazard?

    • WSB May 12, 2013 (10:47 pm)

Too soon to tell; we of course will follow up. Not to be discouraging, but there was a house toward the south end of Delridge which stood empty and charred for about four years after a fire … we finally noticed a few months back while at Pho 88 across the street that it was gone.

  • Steve F May 13, 2013 (8:08 am)

Ill glady volunteer to bring a saws-all and a sledge and help raze it. Or call the bulldozer driver in Anacortes to come help…

  • jns May 13, 2013 (9:36 am)

I’m not familiar with this house, but I almost had an incident with some stained rags last summer. Luckily I caught it before it fully combusted, keep those things in a bucket of water or out of the sun!

    • WSB May 13, 2013 (9:53 am)

We have reported other fires in which this has happened – I recall one in the Beach Drive area a couple years ago. If I can find a safety tip along the lines of what you mention, I’ll include it in followups.
      .
Also, I have just heard back from precinct liaison Deputy City Attorney Melissa Chin, who is following up today, but says she understood that the house was potentially to be reoccupied by members of the family who owns it – which could explain the power, renovation work, etc. Stand by for more followup.

  • Sassy May 13, 2013 (9:52 am)

It’s clearly unsafe, and not doing any favors for the neighbors – hope they are able to tear it down soon. It’s a great location!

  • Yardvark May 13, 2013 (10:02 am)

So glad to hear that no one was inside.

Hopefully, that building will be torn down now. Are there actions that the community can take to make this happen? It’s horrible to have the remnants of an abandoned crackhouse still standing in the neighborhood.

Any chance we could convert this space into a community playground or something similar?

  • wetone May 13, 2013 (10:31 am)

Spontaneous combustion from improperly disposed solvent and stain rags happens a lot. Warmer weather and or room temp makes things even worse. Never throw rags in a pile or in a combustible bag or cardboard box. Seen a lot of fires started by this. Research for proper disposal before using these type of products is always best.

  • wsmama3 May 13, 2013 (11:29 am)

Yardvark – I’d LOVE that – a little pocket park and would be first in line to make it something different – but the owner (and her power of attorney) don’t want to sell. Melissa Chin, the police, Tim Burgess and his staff have all pushed for the owner to be responsible with the support of the neighbors in the community. While we are happy to have less illegal activity at the house, it’s beyond frustrating to have an owner who can’t see what has happened to her home. It’s sad really.
We’ve heard for six months that someone is moving in – which for those of us here is just another excuse for bad behavior in and around the “home” again.

  • Unknown May 15, 2013 (9:41 pm)

All of you are ridiculous this may have been a problem house so you say at one time but its still someone’s home. And for those of you who think the house should be destroyed what if the tables were turned you should be thinking positive instead of creating all this hate and negativity

  • publicgood May 16, 2013 (1:06 am)

What is ridiculous is that we allow people to own property who do not demonstrate the resposibility to take care of it. If it is their house, why don’t they go live it and take care of it or clean it up and rent it out. After a certain period of degeneration neusance property should be condemned and seized. Sell it at auction to a first time buyer. Build a park.

    • WSB May 16, 2013 (3:36 pm)

Actually, that’s what apparently was in the works – the family fixing it up so family members could live there.

  • Patricia Ingram May 18, 2013 (1:21 am)

I am the daughter in law of the 98 year old owner of this house. I have been reading these comments here and in other newspapers. Fair warnig, my husband and nephew have been slandered in some of the comments. We are in the process of contacting our attorney because of these accusations. So if you do not have true information about any of this, I would not advise anyone to be putting anything in writing. Because you may have to prove it in a court of law. Including any of you who have commented about razing this house. Because if anything happens to it, I am sure the police will be interested in you. And thank you all that have given this family the benifit of doubt.

  • Sick and Tired May 18, 2013 (4:22 pm)

Patricia: Thank you for your post. I’m glad that you’ve decided you care enough about this issue to start the “process of contacting [your] attorney,” whatever that means. Does this mean you care enough to actually do something about this nuisance property? If you had the slightest idea of what your family members were allowing to happen on this property for the better part of the last decade, you would be doing something about the problem, as opposed to making vague (not to mention specious) threats to sue and sic the police on them–?!?!. None of the neighbors feel any animosity toward your family. We’re just sick of being victimized by the inhabitants of this house.

  • Anne May 19, 2013 (1:50 pm)

From what I read about the above statement, It sounds like one of those “concerned” neighbors has slandered the owner’s son and they the son and wife are planning to take him/her to court. If the owners are wrong and are not being subjected to harassment, then I hope these neighbors have 100% concrete proof that all the stories being told are true.

  • Raven May 19, 2013 (2:40 pm)

I’m sure there’s a police report to validate that stolen property was found in the boarded up ‘vacant’ house. Too many problem houses like this provide sanctuary for criminals and druggies in neighborhoods that are home to working families and children.

  • Sick and Tired May 20, 2013 (8:04 pm)

Anne: Please share a link to “what [you] read about the above statement . . .” I’d be interested in reading it.

  • unknown 1 May 21, 2013 (1:46 pm)

I bet u would so that everyone on this blog can read the lies and keep this bs going.I only viewed this blog because of seeing family members upset.I would like to know why it is that u people think that the home owners po has not been in close contact with the detectives and city, I know different. It is horrible that neighbors have been misinformed of the communication with the properties PO.unsure of what my comments will do I feel that neighbors should redirect back to the detective and city. The word nuisance is a pretty big word in a court of law and to my knowledge that house was boarded up by the home owners po because of neighbors concerns brought to there attention by city and detective. The house by city standards must not of fit the criteria to the legal description of a nuisance by the city or i would assume that there would have been some record of that. The homeowners po was at that house as soon as they were informed of the fire and started immediately clean up.. “I” feel as to what they do to or with that house is none of any of your business.

  • Sick and Tired May 21, 2013 (9:21 pm)

“unknown 1”: Are we supposed to know what “PO” stands for? (Parole officer?)

And the house became the neighbors’ business when it became a public nuisance. “Nuisance” is a “big word,” but it also has a definition–so break out your dictionary. In fact, “nuisance” is an understatement for the activities that were taking place at this property, so please inform yourself before you defend the people who allowed these problems to come about. The neighbors were begging for the owner to behave in a responsible manner and address these problems for YEARS. The fact that the City had to step in and shut the place down shows how extreme the situation was. So the neighbors suffer for years while their pleas for help fall on deaf ears. And now that the house gets some public attention, and now that the city is going to hold the them accountable, suddenly they all care about what is going on at the house? Too little too late, though you’re welcome to clean the place up and sell it to someone who can handle the responsibility at any time.

Meanwhile, this poor 98 year-old woman has had her home (which did not look so bad 7 years ago), which is possibly her only asset, reduced to a pile of rotting wood and ashes surrounded by rat-infested trash heaps. She’s the one who should be hiring an attorney, by the way.

Then comes the threat of a lawsuit–apparently to try to scare neighbors into not talking. I suppose this should not be a surprise considering the track record, but an apology may have gotten more traction with the neighbors at this point.

In any event, if the family actually contacted an attorney they would have gotten a little lesson in free speech (it still exists here in America), not to mention a lesson in the difference between libel and slander.
