West Seattle restaurants: Mawadda Café now open

Thanks to Jeff for sending the photo after spotting the OPEN sign at Mawadda Café in the Admiral District. We had gone by just yesterday and noted work still under way – but tonight it’s open, confirms WSB contributor Keri DeTore, who reported our original July story about the popular Mediterranean restaurant adding a West Seattle location. Mawadda is open 7 days a week, 11 am to 10 pm, so there’s still time to get there tonight if you see this soon after we publish it! It’s at 2352 California SW (formerly Museum Quality Framing, between The Cask and Wells Fargo).

The spouse and I ate at Mawadda for lunch today – it was outstanding! Food was excellent and service was super friendly. Welcome to the neighborhood!

Very good food, and a great addition to the neighborhood! We had falafels, sambosas, hummis w/pita, and grape leaves. All delish. The falafels and sambosas were light and not a bit greasy. I had to fight my 4-year old for the last falafel. Everything was fresh and flavorful.

We’ve eaten at Mawadda’s Rainier location for a few years now and are so happy to see them here in West Seattle. No only is the food outstanding they have the best Chai on the planet, yes the planet. And the owner is a warm and friendly man who is very proud of what he does, and should be. Simply outstanding! Agreed.

We are so excited to try out Mawadda! It’s just a couple of blocks away from our house and we’ve been waiting for them to open. Definitely a great addition to the neighborhood!

Just had takeout chicken sandwich, and it might be the best sandwich of my life. Can’t wait to try more!

Do NOT go there tonight! Thanks to the WSB they are buried with customers! Give them a couple days to iron out the kinks…it was pretty rough there tonight. The food was great but it was mayhem.

I’m gonna have to take my friend there for the chicken sandwich. Thanks for mentioning it.

Stopped by here today because of WSB, and was not disappointed: The lamb shawarma sandwich is a steal at $6.99, and everything that came out was very good. The falafel was good: Great texture and preparation, but slightly over seasoned in my opinion. The chai was excellent, and the baklava was pretty good: Pistachio based, instead of walnuts, which is a plus for me.

Their main issue at the moment is being slammed and trying to get their system up and running. There are a few kinks to work out, but that’s not a strike against the place at all (They are just new). Once they get that out of the way and put in a few more tables, it will be a welcome addition to WS.

Went tonight and it took over an hour to get a couple of falafel sandwiches. We’ll be waiting a wile to go back. They seemed to have a full staff working, but they just couldn’t catch up with the demand.

Too many customers and not enough staff. Walked in with a couple in front of us, was offered to sit down so we did, and then a bunch of people came in and the line started. We sat there for 20 minutes and tried to wave the one girl who was trying to run the front by herself and watched as multiple people got their food and left before we finally left ourselves. Food sounded good too bad we never got to try any.

..Chcken Sandwich? Is that what it is called on the menu. Is it on bread or a pita? Any link to a menu? How much does a gyro cost?

No idea if prices are current or not, but at least it will give you an idea.

This is not a fast food restaurant contrary to the way it is set up. It is more like a fine dining establishment without a waitress. As with any quality “real food” establishment, a typical wait time for a meal will be 20 minutes or more depending on how many people have orders in.

Fresh & Tasty food! Every ingredient was fresh and I had, by far, the best Gyro I’ve ever tasted.

Give these guys a break while they learn how to deal with the growing demand for the awesome food. It’s not their first rodeo so expect it to get better with time.

    Highly Recommended

One doesn’t trash a newly-opened restaurant until it’s been opened for at least six to eight weeks, so the staff has developed its “operating rhythm.” Patience is well-rewarded at Mawadda, and for those of us who like beer or wine with dinner, the Cask (right next door) is very accommodating. So get in line at Mawadda, order dinner to go, and nurse that first drink at the Cask. By then, your order will be up at Mawadda, and you can bring it back to the Cask and enjoy a second glass with some of the best take-out ever. So happy that Mawadda and Pan Africa Grill have opened up in W. Seattle!

I was pleasantly surprised today to find not only that the food was great but the ambience also very pleasant. It is evident that the owner put a lot of thought and care into the renovation and interior decor. The furnishings and tilework reflect quality materials and workmanship.
