Congratulations to Schmitz Park Elementary, Concord International

Today’s the day Schmitz Park Elementary and Concord International were scheduled to receive their Washington Achievement Awards – two of 13 Seattle Public Schools honored in the statewide awards. Both were honored for “overall excellence,” and Schmitz Park received additional honors for math achievement. The awards, based on assessment data from the past 3 years, were announced in February and to be presented this morning in Tacoma.

Please note that Schmitz Park has been using a different Math program than the one the rest of the Seattle School District has been using. Hopefully this will cause the school district to consider expanding the use of this program. There is a related notice in the Seattle PI concerning the district math program:

The program being contested is not the one that Schmitz Park has been using.

Yes, it’s true. Schmitz Park is using Singapore Math, while the rest of the schools is using Everyday Math. Hopefully the school district will take notice.

Nice work, to the teacher(s) at Schmitz Park who pushed forward with implementing Singapore Math.

Even I, as a parent, I have an easier time with math after learning Singapore. The magic of the program is teacher ed., parent ed., and a willingness to do what you believe is right. Kudos to the teachers of this school for thinking about the children. Not only do the children have a strong foundation in math, they also learn to lead by example.(their teachers) Start writing letters to the school board. I believe they have been doing this program for 4 years.

Sorry, comment time is over.
