82 mph on the West Seattle Bridge – but wait, there’s more!

For the first time in a while, Seattle Police have published a “speeder of the day” update on SPD Blotter. 82 mph on The Bridge this time – but that’s not the only thing they were cited for

Cited?! This guy should be arrested and his car donated to someone with freakin’ insurance. You’ll note that Washington is one of the very few states that allows folks to obtain a DL or renew registration without actual proof of current insurance.

Seems to me that having a “speeder of the day” with a top speed is sending the wrong kind of message. They should publish pictures of the kind of crashes their top speeders could have caused. Here’s one for 80 mph: http://img.thesun.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00889/SNN1631B-_380_889325a.jpg

Just goes to show – pass all the laws you want but
it takes enforcement to make them effective.
    Thank you SPD.
    Please keep at it.

I’m with Kelly 100%. By publishing a “speeder of the day,” some may take that on as a challenge. Show the possible results for a reality check — for all of us, not just folks who are speeding. It’s a reminder of how vulnerable we are on the road, which is a good thing.

They should call it “best revenue generator of the day”.

Of couse it was someone with no DL or insurance going 82 mph…..they have no regard for anyone else….jerk.

They are ticketing westbound this morning.

Coffee, now that is the type of comment we need to be reading. Imagine a world where we had constant speed trap updates. Then we could all do 85 over the West Seattle bridge or 15 for that matter. Going under the speed limit can cause accidents too, people! And Ricky Bobby, best revenue generator of the day? Heck yes! More like whose getting screwed today? Ok ok 80 something over the bridge with no license or insurance is plain silly.

I agree, adding a corresponding photo to the speed would be a great idea. It might also help for the police to keep such things handy to show the speeder, though I doubt many of them would care, as they aren’t thinking too deeply to drive like that in the first place.
    .
Saw a speeder like that yesterday, and hoped they wouldn’t crash and ruin some safe driver’s day.

Cited with no insurance or ID? WTF? Where’s the word “arrested” in that blotter.

  • marty April 13, 2011 (12:06 pm)

Our “mandatory insurance” law is totally useless. States that are serious about it require proof of insurance to get plates and force the owner to surrender the plates if insurance stops for any reason. That’s the only way to get these irresponsible jerks off the road.

I saw the SPD with drivers pulled over this morning in BOTH the west and east bound directions of the West Seattle Bridge. I applauded them in my car! More of that, please.

  • Mark K April 13, 2011 (4:33 pm)

Almost 40 MPH over the speed limit, no valid drivers license, no proof of insurance.
    .
The SPD Blotter doesn’t say exactly if this driver was simply cited, or arrested. Exceeding by that amount, I’d hope arrested. Couple in the other two infractions, they SPD had darn well better have arrested the driver! After all, if the officer let the driver just motor away, wouldn’t said officer be complicit in the commission of a violation (or two – driving without a license and driving without legal proof of insurance)?

Heading east on the WS Bridge this morning I witnessed a fellow stop his small, red SUV in the left lane of traffic, just before the onramp to I-5 to get out and talk to the driver behind him. I was pretty far back, but it looked like he was shouting at the driver. Before long he got back in the car and proceeded to drive off. A cop came up behind him but I didn’t see whether he got pulled over.

As if traffic isn’t bad enough on the bridge, please don’t stop to get out and converse!

I love these stories, please continue to post them.

I was driving down 35th a few weekends ago when I saw the infamous SPD white minivan. I was driving 35 mph at the time but the poor guy who blew past me probably didn’t even notice the camera flash from inside the minvan.

Keep cracking down on these goofs.

John Smith – I wouldn’t call the speeder a “poor guy”. I’d call him a jackass who deserves to pay every penny of the ticket he gets.

Sorry, comment time is over.
