West Seattle coyotes: Totem pole, Morgan Junction sightings

Three coyote sightings to share tonight – two in the same spot, so may well have been the same coyote – read on!

First, Cheryl reported in three tweets at midmorning:

Just saw a big ‘yote chillin’ on the lawn of the totem pole lookout park on 35th & Alaska. Surveying his world I guess. … Would’ve taken a photo, but I was driving & there was nowhere to stop & park along 35th. Have to say, he was big… Much bigger than the skinny little ‘yotes we had back in SoCal & AZ. Healthy, thick coat, alert & definitely NOT afraid

Then we received this note from Brad:

Just thought you’d like to know that each of the last two mornings around 8 AM, I spotted the same coyote in the open field just south of the Totem Pole on 35th and Alaska. This morning, it appeared to be just watching traffic, then ran up the hill like it was playing.

Later on, my wife spotted the same coyote still in the same place at around 9:40 AM. Don’t know if folks are still worried about this guy, but I assume it is the same one (or of the same family, at least) as the one in Longfellow Creek.

From EK:

I was out (Monday) morning around 5:30 walking the dog, and a Coyote was walking straight up the middle of Morgan. No sooner did I spot it, it spotted us and made a quick right and headed up 39th.

We try not to run a coyote report without an informational link – so this time around, we’ll bring one back from the WSB archives.

My husband and I saw probably the same coyote Monday morning about 8:25 am at The Totem Pole Park. It was at the bottom of the burm closest to the houses. I agree it was on the chunkier side so is definitely eating well. It just seemed to be watching the traffic go by. We live right next to Camp Long and I have to say it’s the first one we’ve seen in the 8 years we’ve lived here.

I too saw this handsome coyote south of the totem pole last Friday morning when I was on the bus. Healthy coat, tall and well fed. Hope people can leave him alone.

Please keep in mind that “well fed” and “nice coat” means he’s been chomping CATS.

Please, please don’t allow your cats outside! And please, please don’t feed them!

Our coyotes don’t fear people anymore because they see people has providers of food. Secure your garbage. Coyotes are predators that can, and have, attacked children. They are not cute little pups that live outside. No one wants to say “I told you so” when they attack your dog or child.

If you see them, remind them that they should fear humans. Yell at them and scare them off. It’s best for everyone, including them!

Sorry, comment time is over.
