West Seattle Weather Watch: Snow talk gets more serious

The National Weather Service has just issued a “Special Weather Statement” talking more seriously about the possibility of snow in the area – this weekend and around midweek. For Sunday morning, they’re suggesting “showery” snow – but then at midweek, there’s “the potential for a widespread heavy snow event somewhere in Western Washington.” You can read the “Special Weather Statement” here. P.S. There’s additional detail in the 3 pm “forecast discussion” from NWS – caps theirs:

THERE IS THE POTENTIAL FOR A WIDESPREAD…HIGH-IMPACT HEAVY SNOW EVENT FOR PARTS OF WESTERN WASHINGTON DURING THE SECOND HALF OF NEXT WEEK…BEGINNING AS EARLY AS WEDNESDAY BUT MORE LIKELY ON THU OR FRI. IT SHOULD BE STRESSED THAT GREAT UNCERTAINTY INHERENTLY REMAINS IN THE DAYS 5-7 FORECAST…BUT THE POTENTIAL CANNOT BE IGNORED.

Nice squall line coming in from the north…just about parallel with Alki beach and coming this way. It paints as rain on the radar though…

Looks fairly ominous here in the west-facing south (over Lincoln Park), too. But definitely not cold enough for snow yet. – TR

    NO NO NO NO

Sounds is supposed to be in the mountains – where Nature wants it to be. :-)

The potential will be ignored by those with a Subaru.

I do look forward to the periodic March of the Penguins re-enactments as commuters shed their vehicles to waddle home through the storm.

  • East Coast Cynic January 7, 2011 (4:40 pm)

Delridge, we commuters will also be shedding a few buses with all the stuck cars and possibly another closure of the WS bridge due to jacknifed trucks and buses.

LOL@Delridge Denizen, and fellow Soob owner Peter.

Yeah right. I thought this was suppose to be the coldest winter of all coldest winters since the recording of cold winters…

    Bring it.

  • nextevent January 7, 2011 (6:17 pm)

This means stay off the buses if you get stuck and pack food and water (and blankets) in your car! No more 8-15 hr nightmares. Komo (sorry WSB you are still my fav) says it could change drastically in 5 days (meaning a non-event) but one of their ‘models’ was calling for 8″-10″ inches!!

The National Weather Service stuff we’ve linked to says the same thing. Don’t take anything for granted till Monday, but again, just in case … better to think this weekend about anything you might need to pick up. Just in case.

    1. What an intriguing sunset!!! I have never seen anything like that in over 20 years of living here. It was: awesome, spooky, and beautiful.
    Anyone else agree?

Yep just got some! I am going over the mountains this weekend but they may come in handy next week!

In spite of the eye rolling from my “better half” I have the emergency backpack in the trunk of my car. I have already decided I would rather walk 3 hours to get home, than sit in my car for 4 hours. : )
See you walking across the low level bridge if it happens.

I’m not worried till the temperature forecast drops. It does need to be below freezing for the snow to stick, people.
