West Seattle snow aftermath: Wednesday a.m. commute, schools…

(LAST UPDATE, 9:28 AM: Metro just returned to regular routing. No major road problems – but lots of puddling where snow is blocking drains. Forecast warns of urban flooding. Many schools delayed 1 or 2 hours; we are updating the list frequently – see below)

(Refresh for newest pic from WS Bridge [looking eastbound] and Junction; more cams on WSB Traffic page)
The melt-off is well under way. But many will still be affected this morning by the aftermath of last night’s snow:

FORECAST: An urban flooding advisory is in effect because of the melting snow and puddling water as rain continues. Breezy too.

BUSES: **Update, 9:28 am** – Metro has returned buses to regular routing … Sound Transit says Route 560 remains on a “modified snow reroute.” … 8:19 am note: Andy points out the 54 was delayed 10 mins by the low bridge opening for marine traffic.

SCHOOLS: Seattle Public Schools are opening 2 hours late, with buses running on *regular* bus routes (per 5:10 am robocall; read full SPS message on schoolreport.org – and note this means a previously scheduled early release at Madison MS is ***canceled***) … South Seattle Community College in West Seattle is starting 2 hours late. … Holy Family School in White Center is starting 2 hours late. … Vashon public schools are 2 hours late. … Highline Public Schools, 1 hour lateWestside School starts at 9:30 amSeattle Lutheran High School starts at 10 amHope Lutheran School is 2 hours late … Kennedy High School starts at 10:30 am … Shorewood Christian starts at 10 am … NO CHANGES at West Seattle Montessori (we just called) or OLG Explorer West starts at 10 am … Community School of West Seattle is 1 hour late … Arbor Heights Co-op Preschool morning classes canceled … If you know of a school change we haven’t mentioned here yet, please let us know.

ROADS: Still no trouble reported (as of 6:28 am). Official report from SDOT at 4:43 am:

Two to six inches of wet snow accumulated on Seattle streets between 7 pm and 1:30 a.m. last night and this morning. This morning it is raining and the snow is mostly slush. The West Seattle Bridge and the Alaskan Way Viaduct as well as many arterial streets are bare and wet. Other streets have accumulations of slush and there is standing water in places. SDOT crews have been plowing major arterial streets in Seattle and continue to do so this morning, applying salt where needed to speed the melting of slush. …

More commute reports in the comments (thanks for sharing info!). (added) 9 am SDOT update:

Street Maintenance crews worked throughout the night clearing up to six inches of wet snow and slush from major arterial streets around the city. This morning crews are clearing slush that remains on some arterial streets, especially at the tops of hills. Also, more than 30 SDOT employees are clearing street corners in high priority areas such as around hospitals and in business districts.

SDOT asks drivers to use caution when driving where there is still slush on the roadway making the streets slippery, and to be on the lookout for standing water. Residents and businesspersons are asked to check the drains near their homes and businesses to make sure the drains are not blocked by debris so that water can enter easily. Also, residents and businesspersons are encouraged to clear slush from the sidewalks around their property to enable pedestrians to pass by safely.

TRASH/RECYCLING/YARD WASTE: E-mail from the city at 6:13 am says it’s on REGULAR SCHEDULE today, so if you have Wednesday pickup, put it out as usual. … Allied, though, has some changes.

WEST SEATTLE GOLF COURSE CLOSED: Per tweet from Seattle Parks, too much rain for golfing, too little snow for sledding.

More updates as we get them!

Per the Vashon school district website, they are running 2 hours late today.

    • WSB January 12, 2011 (5:12 am)

Thanks, I added that a few minutes ago, from schoolreport.org. Will also add Highline status when we get that. And awaiting Seattle Public Schools …. TR
      .
(added) Seattle decision now in – 2 hours late. Which is the prevailing decision so far around here…

Drove from North Delridge to Factoria starting at 4:40AM this morning.

26th Ave SW was snowy & slushy, but some nice tracks were taking shape for lanes and I didn’t have any trouble navigating.

Delridge Way near the ramps was slushy but seemed to be clearing up, with some snow between lanes. (I was still able to punch through with my civic when turning left onto Delridge Way from the deli mart parking lot.)

Delridge Onramp was wet, with snow on the sides of the lanes. Some standing water was starting to accumulate, this might be the bigger issue later.

West Seattle Bridge was slushy entering from Delridge and through the “weaving traffic” section where folks merge over for 99. Otherwise bare & wet.

Spokane Street Viaduct near I-5 onramps was wet, though there is standing water in the left lane before you reach the North I-5 merging segment.

I-5, I-90 bare and wet with the very occasional strip of slush between lanes.

I’m confused by Seattle Schools just announcing that the buses are running two hours late, What about the school buildings? Are their doors opening at the usual times?

    • WSB January 12, 2011 (6:25 am)

The buses aren’t (the only things) running two hours late, the schools themselves are. We linked to the audio announcement that came out first. The text is at http://www.schoolreport.org (including ECEAP, kindergarten, etc.) – TR

It’s like a big Slushee out there! Stay safe, all.

Thanks JG, the principal just e-mailed us and we added …

How is Admiral from 63rd to the bridge?

  • Sue January 12, 2011 (6:36 am)

Uh, what happened to it all being gone by morning? Now it just looks like a soggy, slippery, crappy commute in store. Last night it was beautiful – I was out in my nightgown catching snowflakes :) But when you’ve got to commute, not so nice anymore.

  • GeHillOne January 12, 2011 (6:37 am)

Though I appreciate the effort, 5:00AM robocall from SPS was a *little* early…ugh.

See? I didn’t even spell my name right – coffeeee ;)

Any news from Our Lady of Guadalupe?

    • WSB January 12, 2011 (6:55 am)

Neither OLG nor Holy Rosary has sent word … no website updates or Twitter either … though that doesn’t mean they haven’t sent updates on family-only e-mail lists or phone trees. I tried calling HR but just got standard recording. Will be trying OLG. – TR

Just drove from 35th and Morgan to downtown, slushy in places, but for the most part no problem what so ever.

  • AJB January 12, 2011 (6:57 am)

What is it looking like going down Highland Park Way?

  • sno-cone January 12, 2011 (6:58 am)

Just drove from Arbor Heights to the Junction via 35th & Alaska – all slush. Easy. And I don’t have snow tires OR a subaru :-)

  • AH Parent January 12, 2011 (6:59 am)

If it says no AM or PM Kindergarten, does that mean all day kindergarten is canceled too, or just 2 hrs late?

    • WSB January 12, 2011 (7:00 am)

Good question. I will see if I can get a reply.

  • Jeff January 12, 2011 (7:18 am)

Just came across 520 to Redmond from Alki. Most of the slush is gone on the highways, there is lots of standing water and fog on 520.

  • CRUZ January 12, 2011 (7:23 am)

Pretty sure Madison is closed today since it was to be a half day already. Is someone able to confirm that? Thanks!

  • HPK 123 January 12, 2011 (7:24 am)

All day K is just that All day K so it would be 2 hours late :)

  • Rockhills January 12, 2011 (7:24 am)

Any info on how Highland Park Way is looking?

  • HPK 123 January 12, 2011 (7:25 am)

    Highland Park Way is fine…

  • Laura January 12, 2011 (7:31 am)

Cruz, SPS just cancelled the early dismissal…got call and email.

  • CRUZ January 12, 2011 (7:35 am)

    Thanks Laura :)

  • CRUZ January 12, 2011 (7:37 am)

    Thanks WSB!

  • Laura January 12, 2011 (7:40 am)

Sorry for confusion, my comment change didn’t go through!

  • Katie January 12, 2011 (7:42 am)

OLG is on regular schedule. It is on their website now.

  • J.See January 12, 2011 (7:43 am)

Does it bug anyone else that the West Seattle Bridge is one of the clearest places, yet the bus reroutes from West Seattle are basically to avoid the bridge?

  • wsgolfer January 12, 2011 (7:44 am)

Has anyone ventured to ride in (bicycle) to downtown yet? Just curious how the bike route is.

    • WSB January 12, 2011 (7:46 am)

Re: the earlier question about kindergarten: Paige in the Office of Public Affairs says YES, *full*-day kindergarten is ON, with two-hour delay. But halfday AM and halfway PM kinder are both canceled.
      .
(EDITED to fix error from my original posting of this comment. Full-day K on. 2-hour delay. Half-day K, both dayparts, OFF. Verified with SPS via e-mail and phone.)

  • CitizenR January 12, 2011 (7:47 am)

HA!!! doesn’t suprise me at all! Our bus system is “stinky” at best!

  • Clementine January 12, 2011 (7:47 am)

I think the information above about the buses running at regular time is incorrect. Buses are on regular routes(not snow routes), but run two hours later than normal. So if you catch the bus at 7:00, it will now come at 9:00. This is for Seattle Public Schools.

  • Meg January 12, 2011 (8:17 am)

Came from Alaska Junction into South Lake Union via 99 about 20 minutes ago – super easy commute, only slippery spots were between lanes on side streets. Also HUGE standing water at some spots on ramp from bridge to 99.

  • Rhonda January 12, 2011 (8:18 am)

Drive on Admiral from 63rd to bridge was fine. Bunch of slush on the side of the road especially turning from Beach onto Admiral. But very driveable (even in my rear wheel drive car). Actually, the hardest parts were getting out of my driveway and walking downtown through the slush and patches of ice.

  • eileen January 12, 2011 (8:36 am)

DH just drove from west of alaska junction to south lake union as well. Said only slushy parts are before you get to the junction. After that it’s just wet but ditto on standing water.

  • CRUZ January 12, 2011 (8:44 am)

Madison does have school, no early release as per schoolreport.org. It states “All early release schedules canceled”

    • WSB January 12, 2011 (8:52 am)

We were just having this discussion in Facebook. The district did not list Madison in its tweet about schools with previously planned early releases, now canceled. But it’s on the district website. So bottom line appears to be (I have also e-mailed the district to verify), Madison starts 2 hours late, ends regular dismissal time, today.

  • Kayleigh January 12, 2011 (8:57 am)

54 to downtown did just fine. It’s super wet and sloppy though. Not the day for cute boots and skirts.

  • chris January 12, 2011 (9:17 am)

While I like sitting at lights looking at Pioneer Square architecture as much as the next person, in what world does it make sense to use snow routes when the roads are clear and wet?

  • clifton January 12, 2011 (9:44 am)

What a fantastic job you do answering peoples questions even before they have though of them!!!

  • toddinwestwood January 12, 2011 (10:02 am)

    SLUSH DAY!!!!!!!!!

  • Sue January 12, 2011 (10:03 am)

J.See, I find it frustrating as well that the bridge is usually a priority to clear – and clear well – and yet buses can’t use it. Our driver this morning clearly didn’t know the reroute route, kept reading the sheet in his hand (paid more attention to it than the road, IMHO), yelled out to ask if he was supposed to follow the bus in front of him, and then had an attitude when questioned about what stop he was stopping at first.
    .
Incidentally, when the bus (54) is on reroute and takes the lower level bridge, is it then supposed to go up the ramp to the higher WS Bridge to get off the next ramp for 1st Ave.? It seems that if the bus can get up that ramp for the bridge, then it could’ve just taken the regular route onto the WSB. I don’t do the reroute often, so I’m not sure that that’s correct or if the 22 we were following screwed up. Just seems weird and that the purpose of the reroute would be to avoid the ramps up to and down off the higher bridge.

  • Jiggers January 12, 2011 (10:27 am)

I’m willing to bet that Mayor McShwinn didn’t ride his bicycle in to work today.

  • JN January 12, 2011 (12:36 pm)

Cycling in to downtown was fine, as long as you’ve got fenders.

Sorry, comment time is over.
