In case you’re wondering: Spokane St. Viaduct progress

With another round of Spokane Street Viaduct Widening Project construction closures starting tonight – 10 pm-5 am for the next three nights, WESTBOUND ONLY (which means no bridge access from I-5 or Beacon Hill), and 3 more nights next week – you might be wondering, how’s the construction work going? We have the answer, and a few photos, from SDOT‘s Marybeth Turner:

As 2011 gets underway, work on the Spokane Street Viaduct Widening Project remains on schedule.

The contractor recently completed more than half of all the columns needed to support the widened portion of the deck that extends 42 feet further to the north. The crews have installed nearly three quarters of all support shafts that support the columns (there are a total of 154 in the design).

In addition, the contractor is nearly finished pouring the concrete deck from Fifth Avenue to Second Avenue. The intersection of Fourth Avenue and lower Spokane Street – long impacted by construction under the viaduct – should be restored to two lanes in each direction by March, though there may be occasional short-term lane restrictions after that.

Meanwhile, the big milestone for this year, the opening of the new First Avenue on-and off-ramp, is expected to be reached before the end of this year. We expect the total project to be completed in the spring of 2012.

That ramp will not be a replication of the one that was closed and demolished last year – its entrance is further north on 1st Avenue South, and it’s a two-way ramp. If you missed previous coverage of the project, we have an extensive archive dating back almost three years (find it here).

These improvements are excellent overall and I have hope the new lane alignment westbound will reduce the slowdowns on south I-5 as drivers merging onto the viaduct will no longer be merging as they do so.

One question I’ve always had is why there is no access to 99 from westbound on the Spokane Street Viaduct. Seems like this project would have been a good time to remedy that.

There is a whole different set of plans for the triangle area where the used car lots were. Do a seach on WSB and you will get the answer to your question.

You don’t even have to search, just follow the Triangle link in the CATEGORIES list on the bottom of the sidebar … all the categories with which we tag stories are listed there, and clicking any one takes you to newest-to-oldest archive of our coverage of whatever we tagged with the category in question … TR

Pete, thats to bad. Westseattle missed out on a perfect chance to fix the mornning comute. But hay look over at the big hole in the ground, theres proof that plans can change. Maybe the city can claim one of these empty lots. You know like they did for the monorail or link lite rail. These lots have been empty for several years, why not use them in the mean time for a park and ride. The city could lease the proporty from the owner then maybe charge 2 bucks a day. After all who ever owns the proporty now is’nt making a dime off it right now. Except for maybe a food wagon or a imported veggie market. I know if it were my proporty I would paint some lines put up a gaurd shack and sell some parking.

WSB – Just realized I will be coming back to West Seattle late tomorrow night. The article doesn’t say that westbound Viaduct access from Rt. 99 will be limited, just from I-5 and Beacon Hill. So will I be OK if I come south on 99?

    • WSB January 19, 2011 (4:02 pm)

Yes, you should be OK. Access is only limited for the section east of 99 – so, the I-5 and Beacon Hill onramps are closed (I don’t believe there’s any other way to get to that section). During recent similar questions, folks verified that getting from 99 is just fine, since that dumps you well onto the high rise, none of which is affected by this project. Drive safely! – TR
