West Seattle Black Friday: Westwood Village line, and other notes

Just received that photo from David Rosen of SlickPix Photography, who says he’s been in line at Westwood Village Target since 11 pm. David says the line’s still growing – despite the rain – and the first person in line has been there since 6 pm. According to the ads we’ve seen, Target’s opening at 4 am. (photo added – by the time Target opened, the line stretched all the way around the corner past Barnes and Noble and alongside Chico’s!)

As for other WV bigboxes – Bed, Bath & Beyond is also opening at 4 am, Staples opens at 6 am. And if you’re shopping at the Westwood Barnes and Noble today, there’s a Bookfair benefiting Roxhill Elementary School – use the coupon that’s linked here (which is good at the store through December 3rd) and tip the gift-wrappers (tips benefit Roxhill, today only).

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THE BIGBOXES: Many West Seattle independent stores are rolling the welcome mat out further than ever; we’re rolling out Version 1.0 of a special local holiday-shopping guide in the next few hours – stand by for details!

SEALTH BAND IN MACY’S PARADE: The big downtown parade later this morning is scheduled to feature the Chief Sealth International High School Marching Band again this year, according to the lineup in a news release from parade sponsor Macy’s (which also describes the parade route). The parade starts at 9 am; doesn’t appear anyone’s televising it.

Target was the most organized ever. In at 4:30 out at 5:20 and even got everything on the list. Line was very long but it only took 16 minutes.

Staples was great too! Served the guests in line Starbucks and donuts. There was an abundance of staff on hand and everything seemed to go really smoothly. Bravo, Staples. Target seemed frantic, even in the 6am hour. Also plenty of staff around to help. Long weekend ahead, I suppose!

I went to Target this morning when they opened. I have to say that it was so pleasant. There were SO many Target employees helping out. Both the shoppers and employees were cheerful. Yes, it was crowded and the lines were long but I still felt that I was in and out quickly and left with a smile on my face.
I once went to Walmart for Black Friday… NIGHTMARE! That store is horrible to begin with and then add the Black Friday madness. I swore I’d never do it again. But I was pleasantly surprised with Target this morning.

I will add though that if one is going to spend today or this season – spend as much as possible in west seattle! lets support our local businesses and help them survive this crappy economy. We have seen far to many places close down in the last year-I want our small, local businesses to be healthy and thriving-

I’m kind of mystified as to why people line up to shop at 4:00 A.M. I’m not knocking it, just curious. What do they have in the wee hours that they wouldn’t also have at 10:00 A.M. or noon or 3:00 P.M. or later? I went to Westwood at around 10:00 and it wasn’t that busy. No big lines, just a slightly fuller parking lot than usual, and everyone seemed pretty mellow.

Sarelly – Apparently there are limited quantities of some of the so-called “doorbuster” items. We didn’t realize it till several years back, when a member of the household was the fourth person in line for a laptop deal at Staples – and missed out because there were only three of them in the store. All subsequent early morning Black Friday forays have been strictly for photo-taking purposes!

People lining up in the wee hours to get into . . . wait a minute . . . TARGET !!
    .
West Seattle, where is your dignity?
    .
No, wait. Don’t tell me. It’s in Aisle 7G. By the cleaning supplies.

Hey RedBlack… have you EVER had anything good to say about this community or the people that live in it?

  • alkistu November 26, 2010 (4:40 pm)

Hope it was all in good spirits and no “Black Friday” tragedies. Remember tomorrow is “Small Business Saturday” Without the massive media coverage that Black Friday recieves these small businesses could really appreciate your loyalty. Also remember the “Green Saturday” option with the Money Free Shooping Spree at Camp Long tomorrow at 4pm. Sustainable West Seattle is the sponsor and has the details at their website.
    Happy Green Saturday!
