New at North Delridge’s Nucor plant: Stars and Stripes in steel

Maybe you’ve noticed this while driving The Bridge back to West Seattle? Scott C tipped us to it the other day – and now, we have a photo from West Seattle Nucor plant engineer Craig Anderson, showing what he explains is “the new 10′ x 20′ American Flag we installed on the East End of our bag house that is visible from the westbound lanes of the West Seattle Bridge. The flag is one way we support our troops with American Pride. The flag was designed and fabricated out of 100% recycled steel by Nucor and is illuminated at night so it is visible for all to enjoy.”

This is fantastic! I’m sure our troops would appreciate this flag. I for one am glad to see this addition – and love that it will be illuminated too!

WHY!??! Do we often forget which country we’re in? If I weren’t reminded by my local concrete and steel factories, I may never remember.

Very cool. NUCOR is a good community supporter & employer.

Given that the Nucor building tends to get very grimy looking from all the soot etc that they release into our local air, I wonder how long before we can no longer tell the flag from the building?
(It looks very nice now btw)

All that soot? all I ever see is steam they actually have an extensive pollution system

Looks awesome! Nucor recycles, is good to their employees, does civic projects and supports the all volunteer troops. Good on ya Nucor!

As a former troop myself, thank you! Looks great, and adds to the flavor of WS. Nice touch to have it lit too.

I like the flag, but I wish Nucor would do more to clean up the look of it’s site. I’ve heard good things about Nucor supporting the community, etc., and I appreciate that. However, the site is an eyesore (especially bad since it’s the first thing you see driving into West Seattle). Some basic landscaping, paint, and shielding some of the open areas where materials are piled pre-recycling would help.

In Chicago, A. Finkl & Sons does an OUTSTANDING job of maintaining its property in an area that used to be industrial but is now more residential. Check it out: http://www.finkl.com/Tour.aspx

Uh Oh… Proper ratio of height to length of US flag is 1:1.9. So it should be 10 x 19…

(But I think we can give NUCOR some slack here)

I was just about to ask WSB why there aren’t nearly enough American flags around America for me to enjoy.
    .
    Nucor obviously agreed with me.
    .
Let their flag size war with the former FSA building begin.

    Hmmm, what would jesus do?

To alll you people who’d like the earth to be covered in some groomed surface, nature doesn’t look that way, I liked the Nucor building before it was painted, now with the paint and flag we are attracting the Bellevue crowd.

Coming back from the northeast, its pretty customary to always see a flag on ones porch. Its pretty cool and patriotic to see, they don’t need reminders or forgetfulness. They do it with PRIDE. The whole town is usually decked out. Here, we just complain about something.

    BEAUTIFUL FLAG!!!!
    .
Almost as big as the one I hang off my deck on the 4th of July.

Actually the flag IS necessary, as the presence of a steel mill might make you think you took a wrong turn and ended up in China.

  • betsie March 24, 2010 (1:51 pm)

Well the reminders to us are great- but with that large American Flag on the concrete company- THEY IMPORT PRODUCT FROM CHINA……. hmmmmm they aren’t boasting that now ………….are they?

    Nucor- nice flag

Sure… it looks pretty, but let’s get real here. This is hardly about “supporting the troops.”
    .
A flag on a steel mill doesn’t help them get care packages from home, health care when they return, support for education and other needs after service, etc.
    .
I’ve been supporting out troops my entire life, but I don’t need to wave a flag to prove it.

Always good to see Old Glory proudly displayed on a local business, and it serves as a reminder how we’re all bound together under a common flag regardless of our differences.

    Nicely done, Nucor!

Sorry, comment time is over.
