West Seattle Weather Watch: “Snow” falls into the forecast

Yes, we know various “long-range forecasts” hinted at snow, but the National Weather Service didn’t have the word anywhere until “possible snow showers” appeared in the latest outlook for Saturday night. Would be ideal if that happened after the West Seattle Junction Hometown Holidays Tree Lighting (5 pm tomorrow, Marty Riemer, Endolyne Children’s Choir, first drawings in the $6,500 Junction giveaway, be there, Farmers’ Market parking lot). Note the photo at left of the “little” Junction tree, taken by WSB’er Creighton last year in the midst of the Big Snow (this year we’re told they’ll just light the big one to its north). 2:33 PM UPDATE: SDOT says it’s brined the roads in case of ice/snow:

Following the new winter weather response plan, SDOT crews have proactively applied salt brine solution to roads and bridges to address icing concerns and be ready for any possible snow.

In addition to applying the brine solution, which remains effective for several days unless it rains, crews have also been responding to reports of localized ice on side streets formed by groundwater seeping onto roadways.

With possible snow flurries forecast for tonight and early tomorrow, SDOT trucks are being fitted with plows and spreaders, and will be ready if needed. Crews will be on call throughout the weekend. Residents and businesses are reminded, if a storm does occur, of their responsibility to keep adjacent sidewalks clear of snow and ice.

Oh please let it snow!! I’d be thrilled if it was like last year too- I loved every minute of those storms, waking up to see snow everywhere so many mornings in a row.

The first few days are cool, I had a cornice on my roof and some really unusual snow-drifts last year, and had a great time snowshoeing home from work, but after a week of it I am SO ready to have the snow level retreat a bit. 1000′-1500′ is about perfect.

I’ve stocked up on all the essentials! Luckily, last year when I was running low on food La Rustica was open. It is within easy walking distance, so I was set :)

The comments here, me thinks, reflect a minority. The only reason I don’t want it to snow is because I hated hearing people whine about it.

Noooooo! Wait ’til Nickels is gone!

It’s nice to know I’m not the only one who still gets excited at the mention of potential snow in the forecast!

Fun to talk about, but I never pay any serious attention to the forecast more than 3 or 4 days out… seems hard enough to make an accurate forecast even that far away.

I like snow for one or two days, it’s pretty and fun and different. Then that’s enough. But then I really dislike below-freezing temperatures.

“ideal”? shame on you ;) – I vote for LATE night, after holiday get-togethers!

NWS still says “AREAS OF LOW CLOUDS AND FOG THIS MORNING…OTHERWISE MOSTLY SUNNY. HIGHS IN THE LOWER TO MID 40S.”

That’s not what I see out my 12th floor window downtown!

“In addition to applying the brine solution, which remains effective for several days unless it rains”

    but it is raining now.

Yup. Bad timing. I swear, the drops started moments after SDOT sent their news release. Jinx!

We used to get snow like last year about once every 15 to 20 years. So if the weather around here does what it has done as long as my memory, we shouldn’t have snow like that again for another 15-20. I LOVE the snow here in Seattle. Even our snow last year was nothing compared to the snow in Boston, or D.C.
    Love snow.

I’m a snow-lover, too! Never got tired of it last year or any year. I even love driving in it. I love the sound of the snow crunching under the tires. I drive an Outback that loves the snow as much as I do, so that helps. Snow is the only thing that gets me through long, hot, miserable summers like the Summer of ’09. Some people get SAD in the winter, but I have it in summer. I can’t stand sunshine and warm temps. Yeah snow!

Sure, a little snow – Switzerland on the Sound. A week of $*#&ing snow followed by rain? Not so pretty.

Enough for the kids to slide in for a couple days, great-go for it. Enough for the buses to slide for two weeks? Nah…been there, defrosted the gutters (on “spare” vacation days), done that.

No snow this winter, please. When not going to work isn’t an option, let’s just stick to cold and rain. We’re not set up for it in this town (as last year proved). Either that, or we need to import folks from upstate New York or Boston or Denver who understand how to make snow work in an urban environment.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! I love it!

Sorry, comment time is over.
