For everyone who uses southbound 4th Avenue S. by the stadiums while heading home from work (or other business) — the traffic advisory re: repair work has just been updated – read on:
Here’s the latest news release just in from WSDOT:
WSDOT asks drivers to expect heavy congestion and delays on southbound Fourth Avenue S. in South Seattle until crews complete permanent repairs to construction beams damaged by an overheight semi last Friday. Drivers should strongly consider avoiding southbound Fourth Avenue S., and the I-5 and I-90 off-ramp to Fourth Avenue S.
Crews have closed all but one lane of southbound Fourth Avenue S. at S. Royal Brougham Way and the southbound Fourth Avenue S. on-ramp to Edgar Martinez Drive S., I-5 and I-90. Crews hope to complete repairs and reopen all lanes and the ramp by 6 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 29, in time for that evening’s Mariners’ game. However, if crews don’t finish repairs Tuesday, the lanes and ramp could close again at 11 p.m. nightly until 5 p.m. each following day until the work is done.
Drivers who normally use the on-ramp will be detoured on southbound Fourth Avenue S. to S. Holgate Street and back to Edgar Martinez Drive S. via northbound First Avenue S. Drivers can these take steps to help keep traffic moving:
* Consider alternate routes.
* Allow extra time.
* Carpool or use transit
The damaged beams are supporting construction of a new I-90/I-5 off-ramp to S. Edgar Martinez Drive for the $84.35 million SR 519 Intermodal Access Project. Crews are building the new off-ramp and a bridge over the railroad tracks on S. Royal Brougham Way. The project also includes the recently completed widening of the First Avenue S. and S. Atlantic Street/Edgar Martinez Drive S.
