From the WSB Forums: Fighting graffiti; weekend sales

FIGHTING GRAFFITI: This thread regarding graffiti vandalism at a local school is an excellent example of what the WSB Forums – and discussion here in the WSB news section too – are all about, at their best. It started with a citizen concern about getting police to pay attention to a problem; other members joined the discussion, we secured some information, the original post’er followed up, and now more action is being taken. Read about it – and/or join the discussion – here.

WEEKEND SALES: Reminder that yard/garage sales (and business sales too) can be listed free in the WSB Forums’ Freebies/Deals/Sales section – sale season is starting to ebb but there are a few for this weekend listed here.

I’m laughing and yet annoyed to see this at the same time. In the forums thread posts somebody says “If you need to talk to a cop, swing by the Dona Queen donut shop on 4th Ave. S. It seems like there’s always several squad cars parked there.”

It’s funny because it’s a donut shop but incredibly frustrating because I’ve seen the same thing. I noticed this numerous times as I was getting some Arby’s food and saw 4 cruisers and 3 parking patrol vehicles show up at the same time. 3 days prior to that 5 motorcycle cops and 3 cruises showed up for a powwow at Jones BBQ around the corner from that location.

You want to report something, go to those two locations, that’s where your SPD is at.

To be annoyingly technical about it, that’s not “our” SPD – in the sense of the larger dept., yes, but that’s not in Southwest Precinct territory. FWIW. The police here have different break spots – for a while Caffe Ladro was popular in the evening but I haven’t seen ’em there lately – then there was the stretch when Starbucks in Morgan Junction was the hot spot, including the day officers subsequently caught a bank robber quickly at the kitty-corner Washington Federal – TR

you people are idiots…your cops are treated like second class citizens (read the comments)so they have learned to go to work, don’t make waves, and go home (vast majority live outside the city). Every other week a nice paycheck arrives. Since the inception of an over-active OPA Officers have learned that if you do nothing, nothing happens. If you do something, a citizen complaint usually follows. So don’t blame them, blame yourselves for the way you treat your Officers and the ultra-liberal twits you elect to run your city.

One thing to remember, is that police officers and firefighters don’t have the luxury of the guarantee of an uninterrutped lunchbreak, or “coffee” break, that the rest of us normally do. If they’ve just ordered their meal, and are waiting for it to come up and they get a call, they have to leave immediately. Same goes if they have just received their meal, and taken only a bite or two. Admittedly, I don’t know if they usually order it to be packaged for possible take-out, should the need arise, but their mealtime is being interrupted.

    .

Also, I believe I’ve read here on WSB and/or elsewhere, that the officers are often working on their reports during their break time. And, although I’m sure a certain amount of shooting the breeze takes place when more than one officer is gathered at an eating place, I’d wager there’s a fair amount of discussion going on regarding any incidents the officers have come across. I would imagine sharing such info, could be helpful in giving a heads-up on certain individuals, or incidents they have encountered that didn’t warrant much action at the time, but should be monitored because of suspicions that something more may develop in an incident in the future.

Amused, it’s hard to read comments like yours since all you do it blast people with name calling and bring up the standard overused ‘liberal’ comment. It has nothing to do with liberals or conservatives.

I made a call last 4th of July to report fireworks going off at Schmitz Elementary/Park. The first one they said they’d send a unit out. They did not (I watched for it). So after 2 hours the fireworks were still going off, I call again but get a busy signal.

As I’m listening to the scanner I overheard a call for the fire dept to respond to Hinds due to a brush fire… what else did I hear on that call ‘might be related to a call earlier’. Wow… you think? Maybe if somebody responded it could have allowed the Fire Dept. to respond to bigger issues at that time. There are a crap load more SPD than Fire Dept.

Sorry, comment time is over.
