West Seattle Crime Watch: “Property crime occurring right now”

That’s the subject line of e-mail just in from Betsy Hoffmeister of North Delridge — sent not only to alert folks to possible trouble ahead, but to explain what many might not find out about till morning:

Any friends on 26th Ave W/Graham SW area [map] or possibly Snake Hill area or even up in High Point who wake up to property crime, vandalism, or broken windshield/windows are invited to join our police report. At 1:30 a.m. I was awakened by loud voices. My husband had watched a group of young people walking south on 26th yelling at each other. This group was on the bridge across Longfellow Creek yelling, hitting, and carrying on. We reported it to the police who despite my directions were there in seconds; when we went outside we saw that they had jumped on our windshield and shattered it. I wouldn’t be surprised if every windshield on the street is in a similar condition; we didn’t see them do it, so there’s no proof, but if the cops care they could measure footprints cause there’s a huge one in the dew on our car.

Lest you have any doubt – if you hear or see something/someone suspicious, police have reiterated at recent meetings, it IS the right thing to do to call 911 as soon as possible.

Got on my bike and cruised a couple of blocks around our house and didn’t see any other vandalism.

I went down to the bridge and talked to the police / watched the proceedings. I’m impressed with how quickly they responded and how well they handled the situation. Apparently, the person (large female) who stomped on our windshield is 17 and we didn’t actually see her do it so unlikely anything will come of it. Sigh. $100 deductible and a bunch of time to deal with it.

Darn punks! We’ve had some issues farther north on 26th with car vandalism, but it hasn’t happened in a while as far as I know. Our block did a lot of complaining to the police dept/community liason last year about poor response times for 911 calls and we noticed a huge improvement in police response times after doing that. It’s been very reassuring for us to know that when we call 911 now, the police are usually here quickly. Thankfully, our two biggest problem houses have improved in the last few months so we haven’t had to call. Sorry this happened to you.

Ugh last night was especially annoying on 34th between Morgan and Graham street. “Kids” were out in their cars honking at each other and just being loud and annoying late at night. We were really glad to see two SPD patrol cars hanging out in the area last weekend, but I think this area needs a very regular patrolling as it seems this is a regular occurrence. Seriously if they got rid of that ghetto a$$ mini mart on the corner this area could clean up SO MUCH. I don’t even bother calling it in anymore because by the time SPD actually gets there everyone has dispersed.

Hey Nuni – ya gotta call it in even if it doesn’t help immediately – it helps with their stats and getting more officers in the area, etc. Always call! I was quite impressed with the speed of the response last night!

Now if I could just get the desk officer to answer the phone so I can see about getting restitution from the perps last night. I’d at least like to get my deductible paid…

Sorry, comment time is over.
