Update: John’s Corner Deli robbed, clerk hurt, robbers on loose

ORIGINAL 10:03 PM REPORT: The city’s 9-1-1 logs show a police and fire callout to the 7500 block of 35th to investigate an assault with weapons call. Text messages we’ve received say the search is working its way down Myrtle and some of the other side streets off that block of 35th. A helicopter is in the air over that area. Details will follow as we get them.

10:34 PM UPDATE: Police are still combing the area for two robbers who grabbed the cash till at John’s Corner Deli at 7500 35th SW. Police say two males wearing ski masks entered the store, one carrying a knife and the other carrying a firearm. A struggle ensued; a worker at the store received injuries which have not yet been disclosed.

Here’s a shot of what the floor inside looked like as seen from across the street.

1:29 AM UPDATE: The most recent update from police says the robbers are still on the loose and that the clerk suffered “facial injuries.” The descriptions of the robbers aren’t very detailed, but here’s exactly what police said in that update: One Hispanic male with a face mask and a shotgun; one “unknown race” male, mask, with a knife. If you have ANY information, call 911.

I live over here and see several police driving slowly through alleys as though looking for someone and the helicopter is still circling. Right above my house almost! Scary!

  • Erech O. March 26, 2009 (10:07 pm)

I live in the area, the copter just keeps circling overhead, and a police car just drove down my block spotlighting all the yards etc.

    I’m scurred!

  • WTF?! March 26, 2009 (10:08 pm)

No kidding!!!! They’re flying over my house and cop cars are FINALLY driving through our neighborhood. Safety lights going and spot lights cutting up and down the streets.

Keep us informed, as you always do.

Albeit thankful for their diligence, I’m absolutely disgusted that we now have helicopters flying over head in SEATTLE to find criminal pieces of $#!+. Montana sounds better and better everyday!

  • Mollis March 26, 2009 (10:10 pm)

Thanks for the info, WSB! It looks like there’s some serious activity at John’s Corner Market – the front door is shattered (!) and there are a few fire trucks there. It looked like maybe they were attending to an injured person on the sidewalk.

  • Jimmy March 26, 2009 (10:12 pm)

The police have the road blocked at Myrtle and 30th. I also can hear the helicopter making its rounds overhead. I was wondering why they were here. Thanks West Seattle Blog. I knew I could find out what I needed to know here.

  • Sage March 26, 2009 (10:12 pm)

Helicopters still circling — scary stuff. Hopefully nobody was too badly hurt, but this is definitely nerve-wracking. Would love to know what’s going on..

  • Alan March 26, 2009 (10:13 pm)

yeah, they are circling pretty close to my house as well.

  • epl March 26, 2009 (10:14 pm)

    WTF, you have a point!

  • Tim March 26, 2009 (10:14 pm)

Same here, 7500 block of 31st. Not too keen on this kind of stuff happening, especially while we wait for resolution…

  • Heidi March 26, 2009 (10:15 pm)

I am listening to the police scanner on Komo’s website and the person is apparently running through people’s yards and now down around the greenbelt area about Home Depot. Not far from me at all and that helicopter keeps searching!

  • Brenda March 26, 2009 (10:17 pm)

police car just parked in front of my house, 2 officers from car now on foot, each carrying something larger than a pistol. Also large dark suv’s with lights off patroling w/ police cars.

    They’re near Sylvan Ridge Townhomes.

  • Suzy March 26, 2009 (10:17 pm)

This is better than watching crime dramas!

  • heather March 26, 2009 (10:20 pm)

Nice. I live on that block. Scary stuff. My MIL just flew in from MN today. This will not help me justify my west coast livin’.

  • Alan March 26, 2009 (10:20 pm)

Unmarked police car just made a pass down the street on Webster, they must still be looking..

  • Whoa March 26, 2009 (10:20 pm)

OMG I was just at John’s Corner Market a couple hours ago! That’s really scary… I hope the guy at the counter is Ok, he’s a really nice guy.

  • Julia March 26, 2009 (10:21 pm)

    Yikes!
We just had 3 police and a police dog searching our yard. However the police logs lists the incident as closed. Hope they found them!

  • kandie March 26, 2009 (10:22 pm)

Same here, circling helicopters and police cars at the end of my street 34th and Myrtle…..I hope everyone at John’s little deli is okay. Very unnerving. Thanks so much WS Blog for being on top of it.

  • Will March 26, 2009 (10:22 pm)

Same here on 79th and 32nd. Got the scanner going. They might have him in a yard on 7100 and 31st.

  • vccc March 26, 2009 (10:23 pm)

Phuking helicopters. Is that really ness? Better be good? Don’t forget, that’s the police flying around on your tax dollars.

  • Ann March 26, 2009 (10:24 pm)

This is a bit unnerving, listening to that helicopter circle above our place. Thanks for posting this info so soon–at least I don’t have to wonder now.

  • Erech O. March 26, 2009 (10:24 pm)

Ah, I usually walk up the hill to that store a few times a week to grab a soda or something, stretch the legs when I work from home.

Place is overpriced, but the owners are nice people. Hope nobody got hurt.

  • Will March 26, 2009 (10:24 pm)

They are searching northbound. Hill behind Home Depot shows clear, they say.

  • Eikepeka March 26, 2009 (10:26 pm)

We’re close by on 34th….hate to see something like that happen. I hope no one is seriously hurt or worse. Helicopter is still circling, so I guess I won’t be taking the trash out to the alley tonight.

  • Gail March 26, 2009 (10:26 pm)

Our block – 7100 of 34th has been blocked off both ends of street with police cars and the helicopter circling overhead for at least 45 min. now. Scary!

  • Jonathan March 26, 2009 (10:27 pm)

See three officers with flashlights in High Point playfield…

  • susie perry March 26, 2009 (10:27 pm)

we hear the police helicopters circling and we’re not sure what’s going on. wish we knew before we headed off to bed! pretty nerve wracking. we live in the vicinity of 35th and othello.

  • Loree March 26, 2009 (10:27 pm)

We’re a block up the street, and the helicopter’s still circling. Especially scary for us, as the housemate was just *at* John’s about an hour ago.

  • Heidi March 26, 2009 (10:28 pm)

Just too close to home for my personal comfort…leaving the light on for awhile longer tonight.

  • Sage March 26, 2009 (10:30 pm)

Will – thanks for the scanner info. Anything more?

  • Will March 26, 2009 (10:31 pm)

Not much on the scanner. The helicopter is checking EC Hughes right now.

  • epl March 26, 2009 (10:31 pm)

Thanks Will; keep us scanless informed.

  • Will March 26, 2009 (10:31 pm)

Looks like they are calling off the search, actually.

  • Heidi March 26, 2009 (10:33 pm)

sounds like helicopter is gone now

  • Will March 26, 2009 (10:34 pm)

Hm, well, I guess I’m not going to let the dogs out for a potty break. Hope everyone sleeps o.k. tonight. I might leave the yard light on, just for grins. I hope everyone at John’s is o.k.

  • eas March 26, 2009 (10:35 pm)

they are calling off the search, why?? and where is this john’s place off of 35th?

  • Naomi March 26, 2009 (10:36 pm)

I still see police patrolling up and down Webster between 30th and 35th.

  • Erech O. March 26, 2009 (10:38 pm)

Dang, that’s unsettling. If anything happens to me tonight, you guys can have my comic book collection to divvy up amongst yourselves. CHERISH THEM, WSB’ers!!

  • CS March 26, 2009 (10:38 pm)

They are all the way over here on california ave too..helicopters etc

  • rockergirl March 26, 2009 (10:40 pm)

anyone can listen to live scanner @ http://www.komonews.com/news/content/scanner/31214074.html

  • Will March 26, 2009 (10:40 pm)

finally on the news channel 13

  • Will March 26, 2009 (10:42 pm)

2 masked robbers got John’s, took the register, injured the teller.

  • epl March 26, 2009 (10:42 pm)

They’re still driving slowly through our neighborhood east: 29/28 Webster. I will pray harder tonight than usual that 1) no one (innocent) was hurt 2) they catch…and eventually prosecute the guilty.

    Lights on at night…always!!!

  • CS March 26, 2009 (10:42 pm)

what did 13 say caught end of it

  • eas March 26, 2009 (10:43 pm)

    where is the john’s place?

  • Will March 26, 2009 (10:43 pm)

John’s Corner Deli is on 35th and Webster, about a block North of the Chevron and a block South of the fire station.

  • Will March 26, 2009 (10:44 pm)

13 said the worker was injured in the face during a struggle and was taken to Harborview.

  • SP March 26, 2009 (10:44 pm)

It’s the deli on 35th and webster. the deli with the plastic cow on top of it.

  • eas March 26, 2009 (10:45 pm)

is that the fire station near guadalupe?

  • Joe March 26, 2009 (10:45 pm)

Thanks for all the info…we’re at 38th and Myrtle and heard the helicopters overhead…went over our house a couple of times.

Where can we see the police file? We’re listening to KOMO’s scanner but it’s all downtown info…nothing about West Seattle right now.

  • Mollis March 26, 2009 (10:45 pm)

eas – John’s is the corner market/deli at the corner of 35th and Webster – It has a cow on the roof.

  • Will March 26, 2009 (10:45 pm)

    Yes, eas, it is.

  • SP March 26, 2009 (10:45 pm)

SO sad! i live a block from there, and go there all the tim.

  • SP March 26, 2009 (10:46 pm)

    Will are you bill????

  • Lou March 26, 2009 (10:48 pm)

still seeing police vehicles cruise around at 36th and webster. I hope the worker is OK…I love that deli. it is definitely unnerving to see this happen a few houses away..

  • Will March 26, 2009 (10:49 pm)

7329 34th is reporting that someone might have been in their yard. Cops are still looking without Guardian 1, it seems.

  • eas March 26, 2009 (10:49 pm)

oh i know where that is..i always laugh at the cow. do we know if they caught the men?

  • Will March 26, 2009 (10:49 pm)

SP, I was Bill about 15 years ago. :)

  • Will March 26, 2009 (10:50 pm)

    Not caught, so far, eas.

  • Mollis March 26, 2009 (10:51 pm)

The cow is great! The place is under new ownership and I really hope they don’t plan on removing that cow … Any update on if they’ve been caught?

  • Will March 26, 2009 (10:51 pm)

7118 31st, someone might be in the shed. Geesh!

  • eas March 26, 2009 (10:51 pm)

so i take it the helecopter just went away but the cops are still on foot?

  • Will March 26, 2009 (10:52 pm)

    check that, 32nd.

  • Ruby March 26, 2009 (10:52 pm)

We are at 39th and Webster. Leaving the yard lights on tonight also. Be safe and call for help if you need it. This community Rocks!

  • klang March 26, 2009 (10:52 pm)

I fondly refer to it as the Moo Mart when giving my friends directions to my place…”take a left at the moo mart…”

  • eas March 26, 2009 (10:54 pm)

    anything new will?

  • Will March 26, 2009 (10:56 pm)

No, they are trying to get someone down the street to check the shed. I think I’m going to hit the hay with the scanner. Ah, wait, now they say someone checked the yard and the shed (brave man!) and it’s clear.

  • eas March 26, 2009 (10:57 pm)

i can’t go to bed knowing that two men are out there and they could come in.

  • WTF March 26, 2009 (10:57 pm)

OMG! Those poor people. They just purchased the store from John and now this. Good god. Here comes the age old question, what the hell do we do next? Ignore this happened, and “go back to normal”? Think about it people, there were masked and armed criminals willing to hurt someone who provides us a service to us everyday in OUR neighborhood.

So, I ask again. Now what. Any takers on answering?

  • MAS March 26, 2009 (11:02 pm)

Officer just walked down the alley — 7300 block E of 35th ave SW. Shining flashlight between cars. Thanks officer!

  • Bill March 26, 2009 (11:06 pm)

Bill here, SP, is that you Susie?

  • Bill March 26, 2009 (11:08 pm)

WTF, I’m getting a German Sheppard and a security system. I suggest you form a neighborhood watch program with your neighbors.

  • klang March 26, 2009 (11:10 pm)

Regarding a neighborhood watch — I live on 30th and Holden and we’ve had 2 burglaries in the past 2 weeks (1 last night) in our neighborhood so me and my neighbor to the north are planning a watch. We both received flyers last week from SPD about it and she contacted him. First mtg is in May b/c he is so booked. She and I would both like to have something a tad earlier so if there is a large enough interest, feel free to contact me and i’ll put ya on a list for the invite: khlang71@hotmail.com

  • p March 26, 2009 (11:10 pm)

is there any description of the suspects? when we cleaned and closed the laundry (across the street) at 9:30 there were 2 males pacing at the bus stop. We commented that they didn’t look like they belonged in the area and left….

  • eas March 26, 2009 (11:13 pm)

    are police still searching??

  • ratsinacage March 26, 2009 (11:15 pm)

ahhhh, West Seattle.. aint this a great place to live, raise a family, etc..!? Well, it used to be anyway.. I always wanted to live in Belltown, now I can stay here and reap all the same benefits. Thanks!!

  • Whoa March 26, 2009 (11:19 pm)

Kiro 7 reported one of the men had a shotgun.
I can’t believe no one in those apartments above the laundry heard or saw anything. What time did this happen? If it was after 10 the door was locked and they would’ve had to break in.

  • p March 26, 2009 (11:22 pm)

Whoa, unless you have your windows open, the general street noise masks all other noise. I don’t think the gun was fired.

  • eas March 26, 2009 (11:23 pm)

so is there anything new, i have searched all news sights and i cant find anything.

  • Westwood Neighbor March 26, 2009 (11:26 pm)

My dog is barking like crazy at 2 guys walking up Kenyon (westbound) from 28th towards 29th.

  • eas March 26, 2009 (11:27 pm)

so for all we know the police are still searching?

  • eas March 26, 2009 (11:27 pm)

    westwood call the police?

  • beatrice March 26, 2009 (11:29 pm)

Are they still looking? Why did they stop if no one’s been found? This is making it impossible for those of us in the neighborhood to go to bed! How can we find anything out?

  • Aaron March 26, 2009 (11:30 pm)

Just before 11, the scanner reported a call out to 28th because of a dog barking at a very dark driveway. Haven’t seen any patrols in my area (1 block north @ Othello) for a while.

  • eas March 26, 2009 (11:30 pm)

exactly beatrice. i cannot go to bed knowing there are 2 guys round my neighborhood on the loose with a gun and a knife

  • Whoa March 26, 2009 (11:30 pm)

Thank god his injuries aren’t life threatening, that’s a relief. I hope the police catch these losers soon.

  • beatrice March 26, 2009 (11:31 pm)

but where’s the cash register? Did they at least find that?

  • eas March 26, 2009 (11:33 pm)

hey bill should the scanner just start automatically mines not going

  • Ruby March 26, 2009 (11:36 pm)

thanks for link- i cannot sleep either knowing they are still out there and the calming cricket noises on the sound machine are not helping…

  • beatrice March 26, 2009 (11:37 pm)

why would they abruptly stop the overhead search if they are still out there assumably on foot???

  • so done. March 26, 2009 (11:40 pm)

nothing like feeling like a prisoner in your own home.

regarding WTF… of course we will all go back to normal and pretend like nothing happened. We’ll all turn the other way when walking by the HP park and the kids that should be in school are smoking pot and drinking their 40 ouncers. We will continue to ignore the abandoned cars in the back yards and parked on 32nd. You know, I hate to say it… but as soon as they opened up Myrtle and opened up the pretty cookie cutter homes by the park- it’s gone DOWN hill fast. I’m so sick of my happy neighborhood turning into thug central…. ugh. and before everyone starts telling me I need to get involved… etc… I’m just grumpy about this and of course I’ll continue to stay involved… It just sucks that 911 needs to be on speed dial now.

  • Bill March 26, 2009 (11:43 pm)

eas, yes it starts automatically. There are periods of silence. Not much chatter about our problem right now.

  • Bill March 26, 2009 (11:43 pm)

While we’re all awake, what do you think of Letterman’s jacket? Odd isn’t it?

  • Bill March 26, 2009 (11:44 pm)

Sorry, it’s a suit and I’m warming up to it.

  • Whoa March 26, 2009 (11:45 pm)

If I ever record a rock album I’m going to title it “The Calming Cricket Noises on the Sound Machine Are Not Helping.”

  • Bill March 26, 2009 (11:45 pm)

I really hope that nice man who bought Johns is ok.

  • PSM March 26, 2009 (11:47 pm)

Thank you for all the updates. It is helpful. I hope they find them soon so we can all go to sleep.

  • klang March 26, 2009 (11:47 pm)

I know many of you are kinda freaking out but these guys had a very clear goal and that is to get cash. They know this is a “hot” area so they’re going to be doing their best to get the hell out of dodge. I’m sure part of the decision to call off the overhead search is for that very reason. This was a very planned hit. Let those crickets lull you to sleep!

  • beatrice March 26, 2009 (11:48 pm)

so you think they’re long gone out of our hood? (say yes)

  • PSM March 26, 2009 (11:49 pm)

Dirk have you seen anything more on Webster ?

  • Whoa March 26, 2009 (11:49 pm)

so done, I drove through those “pretty cookie cutter homes” for the first time last week and was surprised at what a bad element was attracted to them. They’re more active than the corners in The Wire. If you see kids smoking pot and drinking though I hope you call 911 immediately.

  • p March 26, 2009 (11:51 pm)

    yes, hit the sack!

  • Whoa March 26, 2009 (11:51 pm)

Bill, yes he’s Ok, he had cuts to his face but the police say the injuries were non life threatening.

  • AD March 26, 2009 (11:51 pm)

Sigh. I like the people at “The Cow Store” and I know many people in the neighborhood. Many years ago, wasn’t someone shot and killed in front of John’s?

  • Todd March 26, 2009 (11:53 pm)

P, you can’t hit the sack, you have around 4 dryers that need fixing. Also the timer on the first little washer right next to the big washer isn’t working, it counts down slower than all the rest. Get to work!

  • Eric Holder March 26, 2009 (11:54 pm)

Yo cowards talking about cookie cutter homes, thanks for voting Democrat!

  • eas March 26, 2009 (11:55 pm)

does anyone still se cops outside

  • beatrice March 26, 2009 (11:56 pm)

Wow – thanks Bill & Todd – the comic relief is much needed…I feel better now. Thanks again, WSB!

  • beatrice March 26, 2009 (11:57 pm)

Oh yeah, you were funny too, Whoa. That rock album thing… too much.

  • p March 26, 2009 (11:57 pm)

Todd, 2 dryers, parts on back order… And the counters count slow because we have the lowest water presure in west seattle. We sit at the highest point of west seattle, 563 above sea level.

  • Bill March 26, 2009 (11:58 pm)

    You tell ’em p

  • Todd March 27, 2009 (12:02 am)

Thanks P, you’ve educated me like a lemony fresh fabric softener across my brain.

  • p March 27, 2009 (12:04 am)

    Full service for ya…

  • PSM March 27, 2009 (12:09 am)

Have they caught these guys yet ???

  • WTF March 27, 2009 (1:00 am)

    So done,
I hesr you loud and clear.

  • WSB March 27, 2009 (1:12 am)

Hey all, thanks for the info-sharing. I was out of commission for this one – co-publisher Patrick did a hell of a job with the pix and at-scene info-gathering – you all rock with info-sharing. He went by again about an hour ago, and said there were still a couple police in front of the store. I am checking now on whether there’s any update on arrests etc. – TR

  • Cheri Berri! March 27, 2009 (7:05 am)

I hope the clerk is ok. John and the people there are just wonderful. i spent my childhood walking the the 5 blocks up the hill from 29th and webster to get laughy taffy with all the neighborhood kids!

  • nuni March 27, 2009 (7:25 am)

I was wondering what all the noise was! Peaked my head out of the blinds but didn’t see anything. Now I know! Thanks for the info :)

  • Kayleigh March 27, 2009 (7:33 am)

We used to walk up there (when it was Be’s) and buy those little dixie cups of ice cream when we were kids. How disgusting to think there was someone with a shotgun in there.

  • CLT750 March 27, 2009 (7:57 am)

I wasn’t to sure about the new owners, but I was up there a couple of weeks ago buying some things and when I went to pay with my debit card the card machine was down. He let me take my items without paying and kept the receipt by the register with my name and phone number on it. Went back a few days later a paid him. That doesn’t happen very often. I hope they are all OK.

  • so done March 27, 2009 (8:06 am)

    Good Morning.
I went to bed realizing there was this false sense of security… that the “bad guys” had left the building. These idiots actually might LIVE in WSEA? Police were looking for them on foot- no “get away” car. They had a shotgun… don’t think they jumped on the bus to head back over the bridge.

    I want my WSEA back!

  • WTF March 27, 2009 (8:27 am)

They are good people. Now that we’ve covered the story and made our suggestions, we all need to SHOW these people our support. Whether you just go in to buy a pack of gum and tell them thanks or something bigger, we need to come out from behind the computer and put our anger and fear into exhibiting support for our neighbor. Let’s start the out pour at the fact no one was killed. Not sure about any of you, but I would love to see cards and flowers of support instead of in memorial any day.

  • WTF March 27, 2009 (8:29 am)

    P.S Always pay it forward.

  • RainyDay1235 March 27, 2009 (8:37 am)

And props to the police for a HUGE show in force. It did not make for the most settling night, but it would have MUCH worse to hear nothing was being done. Kudos to the cops – and cop dogs – and I hope you got some leads on the ba*tards!

  • TeresaP March 27, 2009 (8:39 am)

Are the ‘ccokie cutter” homes that everyone is referring to actually our City’s latest invention to have “diverse” neighboorhoods as in HIGHPOINTE. Yesterday I was tempted to say this on another story, today I will.
When the old homes were torn down, West Seattle actually got some peace in the valley for a little over a year. Now that the new homes are completed and people are moving back in, guess what happens??
If I am offending anyone who lives there, my apologies because if you are reading this blog you more than likey are not the kind of person I am referring too.
I have seen a huge change in West Seattle and I am damn angry about it.
Too bad the store owner was not armed and took care of these a-pipes himself.

  • lashanna March 27, 2009 (8:47 am)

TeresaP: Some of them were built by Polygon, so they should fall apart in a few years anyhow. I am not saying anything about the residents, because I am not there enough to know the area, and all type of people by these types of new homes. The homes are not the best quality homes, so maybe that neighborhood will be non-existent after the home warranties expire. Then we could turn it into a community garden. I like gardens.
This area could be pretty cool, but they built a bunch of bad houses on it.

I live in high point. I own my house. The 2nd phase you are referring to was supposed to be 1/2 owners, 1/2 SHA renters. Since the housing slump, only rentals being built. No private homes. There goes the “diverse” community. Almost all of the renters are hard working people. That need a hand up. But a few can rotten the barrel. I only hope SHA doest break their word and build only rentals.

Good morning, all – Wanted to let you know that I have just filed an update:
    https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=15258
    .
No one arrested so far, though, which I know is the big question – TR

Deli’s not yet open this AM – note on the door but could not read it when driving by. Hopefully this won’t cause them to close down. The neighborhood uses this little store more than i realized and the new owners deserve our support.

  • WSB March 27, 2009 (10:01 am)

Thank you, rockergirl – I am about to leave the house to check on a few stories and that was going to be my first stop. The updates from all those of you who live nearby are very important – likely that someone else will see it reopen, or find out something about the clerk’s condition, between our instances of checking on it, but I will go see what the note says – TR

  • WSB March 27, 2009 (10:18 am)

Update. Stopped by at 10:10 am – the store is open. Added a few lines to:
    https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=15258
I asked that everyone’s best wishes be conveyed but I am sure it will mean a lot more when you all stop by in person to say so yourself- TR

I think that the High Point references are abhorrid. I cannot, actually, believe that these comments are allowed to stay on the thread. I live near High Point and have throughout the tear down and rebuild. There was no time of “peace in the valley” – the same amount of car-break ins and vandalism existed. Check the “Admiral district” crime – people so badly want to blame others in a blind-blanket kind of way and it’s so frustrating! “if you are reading this blog you more than likey are not the kind of person I am referring too.” Besides being riddled with misspellings, this statement is completely ignorant! This is not the WSB community attitude is it???

    Beatrice has a noteworthy point.
    .
For anyone trying to tie what happened here to High Point – you might as well tie it to Gatewood. 35th/Webster is actually closer to that neighborhood than to HP. Police have stated at recent crime council meetings that HP crime is no worse than other areas of West Seattle.
    .
Regarding rentals vs. sales – it also bears noting that this is happening in many of the developments we cover around West Seattle – they started with condo intentions and changed to apartments because that is what the market will bear right now.
    .
And let me cap one thing from Beatrice’s note right now. Please don’t criticize people for their spelling. While we value correct spelling and grammar, nobody is perfect, and it is NOT a prerequisite for posting on this site. Just wanted to say that before anyone subsequently jumps on Beatrice herself for the misspelling in line 1. It’s the discussion, not the spelling.
    .
    thanks – TR

Oh also, to clarify another point made above regarding how the robbers got away. As I noted in this morning’s followup, police now say they are believed to have gotten away in a vehicle from a point described as half a block away from the scene, where the trail ended for K-9 tracking attempts.
    .
    Again, today’s followup is at

Highpoint (or what should best be described as Lowpoint)…

    1) the community and how & why it was built were very much planned. Given a $35 million HUD grant (with plans to receive more) in addition to $515 million in unpublicized sources.
    2) it “touts” itself as the largest multi-cultural, multi-economic, HIGH DENSITY, “sustainable” living community in the west. What’s wrong with that picture?!
    3) there are single family market rate “purchased” townhouses, LI subsidized townhouses and Section 8 apartments and senior living.
    4) a total of 1,700 “families” are expected to live there within the next two years. If the math of high-density housing and average urban family size serves me, that’s an estimated to be over 9,300 people in 120 acres!!!

That said. The project will backfire and fail. Agreed the houses will eventually be what they once were: crap, federal housing. But, not until after deteriorating our neighborhoods, shoving 60 pounds into a 5 pound bad, and the developer, who BTW lives / lived in one of largest, most expensive houses there, will walk away with tons of money.

The reality is, just putting new paint and on an old problem will never create solutions. And, the fact this city allows such high density building to continue (see the Junction!) regardless of income or property value will drop West Seattle into a black hole that it will never recover from. My family and I come back to visit in about 8-10 years to see just what happens to the place we grew up and support. We’re tired of it here, and have just sold our home and will leaving.

I can only assume you mean the use of the alternate latin spelling of “abhorrid” vs. “abhorred” which is completely acceptable in academic circles. This is not a misspelling! And certainly the idea of correcting people’s spelling in a free flow type writing venue does seem silly, but doesn’t it also to say that people who read this blog are not the type of people who are causing problems? I am so frustrated when I read comments like this and they are not objected to. Perhaps I am not the “kind of person” who should be on this site any more, because I am the “kind of person” who can let these comments just slide.

  • WSB March 27, 2009 (4:50 pm)

I love discussing language, personally. “Abhorrent,” the adjective, seemed like the one called for there, rather than “abhorred,” the verb. And re: who is reading this website – you’d be surprised; from what we know anecdotally, a much wider demographic than you’d expect … TR

What a testament to all of us that the (new) owners opened the store and conducted business less than 14 hours after this happened to them.

Leading by example is a lesson well taught.

Sorry, comment time is over.
