West Seattle Christmas tree price survey, first 2008 installment

treesgraphic.jpgAfter a few hours out and about Sunday afternoon, we are convinced there is no better time to shop for a Christmas tree than a foggy afternoon, with the tree boughs glistening from the moisture left by the mist. Once again this year, we’re sampling prices. We don’t have an across-the-board comparison, since the various tree-sellers engage in different price-styles, from flat fees for a certain type in a certain height range, to per-tree labeled pricing, to per-tree “you gotta ask” pricing — but this might at least give you a little budgeting information, for starters. We intend to update this as tree season progresses in the next few weeks, and possibly to break out some side notes too (your options for living trees, for example). Anyway, here goes:

Reviewing the current West Seattle tree sellers alphabetically, here’s what we have found so far (if there’s a website for the seller, its name will be linked):

HOLY ROSARY TREE LOT

How it’s priced: Set prices for trees in certain size/type range
Price(s) we sampled: $44 for 5′-6′ Noble Fir, $49 for 6′-7′ Noble Fir
Note: During Sunday visit, we saw only Noble firs in this small grouping of trees out front of the store

Price(s) we sampled: $39-$159 for the labeled flocked trees, from tabletop size to, well, massive
Note: Friendly employee told us that the Tony’s crew cuts the trees themselves and have been at work for “at least 2 weeks” getting the trees with which they launched the lot last week

TRUEVALUE

How it’s priced: Set prices for trees in certain size/type range

WEST SEATTLE BROS. (new this year)

How it’s priced: Per tree, tagged
Price(s) we sampled: $59 for Noble fir that appeared to be 6′-7′
Note: This lot is run by West Seattle-based entrepreneur Ryan Reese

WEST SEATTLE NURSERY (WSB sponsor)
Location: 5275 California SW (map)
How it’s priced: Per tree, tagged
Price(s) we sampled: $39 for 6′-7′ Grand Fir
Note: Before our price check (which we do in “secret shopper” in-person-visit mode for all sites), we asked WSN for a list of tree types they’re selling – here it is: Natural Douglas Firs, sheared Douglas Firs, Grand Firs, Fraser Firs, natural Noble Firs, sheared Noble Firs, live Christmas trees, cedar garland, cut greens sold by the pound

In case you lose track of this list, note that it is now linked atop the Holiday Happenings page, so you can find it there anytime. (Disclaimer: These are the prices we found during visits this weekend; no guarantee they won’t change by the time you go tree-shopping, but as mentioned above, we intend to check back in a week or so.)

THANK YOU for getting this published!

We ended up walking to True Value to get ours – the fun of taking it home in a wagon was just too good to resist. (I loved watching people smile as they saw our goofy family, the three humans in Santa hats and the dog on a leash just joyful to be out with us, lugging the tree a few blocks home….) True Value has a $5 off coupon on their website that you can apply to the tree, so it was a pretty good deal, and in the past we’ve had good luck with the quality of their trees.

Does anyone know if the folks down at the RV/Boat Storage on Alki are selling trees again this year? We got a great tree at an amazing price last year…

If you’re interested in a fun day out, my family packed up and drove down Enumclaw direction, bought a permit fromm the ranger station and went cut down our own tree.We drove 15 miles up a forest road, had an amazingly clear day, superb views of Mt Rainier and bowls of turkey soup:)…It ranks as one of our best family road trips ever:)

Thanks again for the price guide WSB. Always very helpful. I stopped by the West Seattle Bros lot on 39th and Alaska on Saturday afternoon. The owner of the lot, Ryan was there to greet me with a smile. We ended up getting a great tree and even a wreath for the front door. Definitely worth checking out.

Remember, though, there is only one Chrisnams Tee source of whose preceeds are donated 15% to West Seattle charitable organizations. That is the Holy Rosary Tree Lot who gives 5% of gross proceeds each to the West settle Food Bank, the West seattle Help-Line, and the Hickman House (to benefit battered women through the Salvation Army). I believe that in excess of $5,000 has been given to each of these worthy organizations in each of the last several years. Not only that, but these qre some of the most beautiful trees available in all of Seattle, let alone the West Side.

ADD – They were hoping to but had some trouble getting a permit from the port again this year – I expect we’ll hear from them if they work it out.

Don’t forget Pathfinder K-8 Alternative’s Wreath Sales – $25 buys you a staff, kid or parent handmade wreath. Each one of a kind – beautiful bows too – – The funds ALL fund Pathfinder’s expeditionary and outdoor education funds – each clan/class gets credits for gathering (we can always use more greens donations), making and selling – last year we raised over $7,000 – that’s a lot of wreaths and volunteerism.

We will also sell at the WS Farmer’s Market – –

We also have craft fair coming up 12-12 – great handmade affordable gifts made by kids, staff and parents – – pls. come see us

Is there somewhere where we can get a pesticide-free tree in West Seattle? Thanks!

We got ours again at McClendon’s — $17 for six feet of joy.

Sorry, comment time is over.
