Updates: Construction rescue on Avalon, plus traffic alerts

(no more updates here – post-rescue updates and wrapup can be found here)

Two of us were driving through the Luna Park business district on the way to the Water Taxi when the first emergency vehicles rolled up – the callout was “trench rescue” – we saw what looked like the site of some digging toward the southwest side of the ex-Murphy’s/Cafe Revo building, with rescuers heading for it; some texts we received suggest it’s a sinkhole; another team member is just arriving now – stay away from that part of Avalon, which is now blocked off by emergency vehicles (between Yancy and The Bridge).

4:10 PM UPDATE: Scanner says the exit on The Bridge leading to Harbor is going to be closed off to minimize traffic to this scene. WSB team at the scene reports it’s a construction trench that collapsed. No word on the condition of the person(s) who needs to be rescued. SFD “heavy rescue” equipment just arrived.

4:16 PM UPDATE: In comments, Sarah says a friend who works at Ola salon next to the scene was told the construction work was related to the restaurant project and the salon is effectively closed right now because no one can get into or out of the scene.

4:21 PM UPDATE: Public information officer at the scene says the construction worker is stuck about 4 to 6 feet down, by loose soil and crumbled concrete — they’re bringing in more equipment to help clear the hole, including Vactor trucks. The worker is reported to be conscious and not currently in pain.

4:29 PM UPDATE: As Nancy posted in comments, KING 5 has a live aerial feed up at this link. We can’t compete with that one – no Chopper WSB – but there’s no narration on their feed so keep checking here periodically – we have two people at the scene feeding us info we’re posting as we get it, and we’re monitoring scanner traffic (“ongoing process” is how one rescuer just described it when someone else on the emergency frequency asked for an update).

4:33 PM UPDATE: New update from the scanner — “victim appears to be doing well, he is drinking Gatorade and participating in the rescue.”

4:43 PM UPDATE: Update at the scene from fire department PIO, the victim is trapped from the waist down but still conscious and alert, the Vactor trucks will be working to help clear some of the concrete, asphalt, and dirt that collapsed and trapped him. From the comments, two people report that Ola is going to be evacuated because more digging will be necessary “under the building” to help make this rescue happen. Also note that Nancy has posted bus reroute info in comments – we will seek to verify with Metro.

4:48 PM UPDATE:
KING chopper feed went to color bars, will watch to see if anything else comes up. Meantime here’s a map showing known road closures because of this rescue effort:

Sounds on the scanner like rescuers have made progress at least partially freeing one of the worker’s legs.

4:55 PM UPDATE: Yet another “heavy rescue” vehicle just arrived. And our crew on the scene says “a stretcher’s gone up” (to the rescue scene). KING just reported the man who’s being rescued is in his 30s. Their live aerial feed is back up online – intermittently.

5:06 PM UPDATE: At the scene, they’ve just rolled a medic unit closer into position – hoping that might be a sign they’re getting closer to pulling the man out.

5:14 PM UPDATE: Scanner says rescuers who are in the hole with the victim are rotating in and out to keep fresh. Our team at the scene says lumber is being cut now to take in to shore up the hole so that it doesn’t collapse further.

5:28 PM UPDATE: At least one nearby business has closed for the day (Avalon Glass Works) since nobody can get into or out of the area. Rescue work continues.

5:35 PM UPDATE: Watching the live KING chopper feed – the rescuers appear to be rigging a hoist of some kind. Scanner traffic says a crew has to go get some kind of special equipment and/or piping from another location (the “Charles Street shop”) – and they’re going to get a police escort to go get it posthaste.

5:40 PM UPDATE: Thanks so much to JH for sending this photo – looking toward the rescue scene south of Revo, in front of Ola, from Avalon:

rescuephoto.jpg

5:43 PM UPDATE: WSB just talked with Cafe Revo co-owner Sean Goff at the scene – and what he told us is pretty much the same thing his wife and Revo co-owner Sofia Zadra Goff just left in comments – pulling it up here to the main story too – note this is NOT part of the Revo conversion work, as she explains:

My husband and I own Cafe Revo. I just wanted to let everyone know that the construction going on has nothing to do with our business or renovation. We have not begun any construction yet. The workers there have been hired by the owner of the building (including Ola and the apartments, as well as our space). She is having work done to fix some bad drainage from the parking lot that has been leaking for some time into our space (while Murphys was there) and had caused the South Wall of the building to rot out. All of the men down there that have been working have been very nice and respectful of our space. We really hope that the man is not hurt and will be okay. Thank you! Sofia

5:52 PM UPDATE: Some of the key equipment is moving closer into position.

HE’S OUT! 5:53 pm. And has been transferred into medic unit. We took a pic of the TV screen which we should be able to upload till our pix can get back. No word on condition yet, we’ll let you know as soon as media crews at the scene get that word.

5:59 PM UPDATE: TV screen update. Rescued man on way to hospital. Emergency rigs will be starting to pull out from the scene. Just heard aid crew tell hospital via radio they’ll be there (Harborview, we would expect) in about five minutes.

tvpicture.jpg

6:03 PM UPDATE: KOMO zoomed-in aerial photo showed the man trying to sit up, as they secured him on the gurney. We’re awaiting an official update at the scene and also possibly a chance to talk with a firefighter about exactly what they had to do to get him out. He was trapped for more than 2 hours – this all began around 3:40 pm.

6:26 PM UPDATE: We’ll have more pix to add in a separate post shortly. Also still staked out at the scene awaiting a potential update.

Just got rerouted from there 10 minutes ago. The activity seems to be centered around Avalon and Yancy/Andover St. Several fire dept. vehicles are parked there, and there are police units on each side turning back traffic.

  • JH July 16, 2008 (4:12 pm)

Must be the reason I’m hearing helicopters. And I’m near Schmitz Park!

  • WSB July 16, 2008 (4:13 pm)

Yes, it is right on the southwest side of the ex-Murphy’s/future Revo building. Closure appears to be starting at Yancy, and note that we just added the bridge exit to Harbor (westbound) is being closed too.

my best friend Sarah is a hairdresser at OLa Salon, and she just texted me that a worker for the new restaurant next door was digging in the trench right our front of the salon when the hole collapsed on top of him…she said the salon is effectively closed right now as there are so many fire fighters and rescue people outside that they are no allowing anyone to enter or leave OLa…she also just said that they were trying to pull him out but had asked everyone at the salon to turn away as it may be bad…my prayers for that guy and for the folks at OLa…

Looks like buses northbound on Avalon are going to be routed down Genesee to Delridge.

  • port80 July 16, 2008 (4:32 pm)

My thoughts are with the trapped man and his family…

  • Nancy Folsom July 16, 2008 (4:35 pm)

WSB, keep up the good work. The live video is fascinating (amazing how clear and steady the image is), but it only tells part of the story. The info from people on hand is actually easier to decipher.

God. Everyone’s nightmare. I keep hoping the choppers fly away quickly. The longer they’re here the longer that worker is in the ground.

Wikipedia says “trench rescue” is a very specialized form of rescue. It does seem highly intricate. It’s amazing how how fast they got there and setup.

  • andrea July 16, 2008 (4:41 pm)

my best friend at OLA just called to tell me that they are evacuating the entire area around the salon and where Cafe Revo will be as apparently where the man fell is right by a gas line and they don’t know if they will be able to move around it sufficiently with the equipment to free him…

She was also pretty upset becasue every worker and customer leaving the salon was being chased by reporters asking for info on what they saw and putting a camera in their face…she felt it was very insensitive and unsettling as everyone there saw/heard this man fall and are just concerned for his safety at this point…

  • CH July 16, 2008 (4:42 pm)

A friend is at Ola and the whole salon was just evacuated because they need to dig further under the building.

  • sam July 16, 2008 (4:46 pm)

I knew I’d find out the reason for the helicopter the second I turned to the ws blog.
hopefully, everyone will be safe soon.

  • Nancy Folsom July 16, 2008 (4:50 pm)

More video coverage: http://live.komotv.com/ as of this writing.

Just crossed Spokane Street to West Seattle Bridge. There was an accident West bound.. Wondering if it was caused by someone looking at the helicopters. Backup extends way up I-5..

  • WSB July 16, 2008 (5:16 pm)

thanks – we have reported that in a separate item after hearing about it on the scanners:

    Great job WS Blog!
I live on Avalon just blocks away and went right to the blog to find out about the chopper noise in the sky. I hope the man is OK.

  • WSB July 16, 2008 (5:19 pm)

we hope so too. it sounds like they are doing a heroic job (in addition to the rest of the heroic work) to try to keep him calm while doing all this intricate work to get him out without worsening the unstable situation. meantime, thanks again to everyone who continues contributing information here. If anyone who was in the area has any photos, cell or otherwise – our guys at the scene are having trouble transmitting out of there (guess Avalon/Bridge can be a bit of a cell hole, or maybe just for Verizon) so we haven’t had a visual to add since the photo atop this post that we caught from the other side of the roadblock before rushing home to post the first info.

  • KM July 16, 2008 (5:27 pm)

Thank you, WSB—and folks on the scene or in touch with those who are—for supplying the updates!!

It’s such a relief to hear that the fellow “…appears to be doing well, he is drinking Gatorade and participating in the rescue.” I was flipping local news channels and didn’t get that kind of detail or immediacy from them.

The live video feeds have been gripping; fingers crossed we’ll soon get to see the worker freed and taken to the waiting medic unit. And three cheers for Seattle’s emergency responders, all of ’em!!

  • Sage K July 16, 2008 (5:31 pm)

I knew I would find out what the helicopters where hovering over at WSB. I really hope that they are able to get the guy out fine and that everything goes smoothly.

Thanks for being on top of everything!

  • JH July 16, 2008 (5:32 pm)

I rode my bike there (I wasn’t gawking-I was riding on Alki anyway and couldn’t resist) and it’s crazy. Tons of fire trucks, cops, rescue workers, etc…a citizen told me there wasn’t enough support in the trench and concrete fell in, trapping the worker. As of 5PM, no rescue yet. They were bringing in a stretcher, which I was hoping was a good sign, but they were just moving it closer. Good view from the bike, but I started feeling guilty (I hate gawkers and I was becoming one!) so I left.

  • JH July 16, 2008 (5:33 pm)

This non-gawker has cell phone pics. Make it easy for me-what’s the email address?

  • WSB July 16, 2008 (5:34 pm)

    editor@westseattleblog.com

    thank you!

  • WSB July 16, 2008 (5:47 pm)

Thanks for the update, Sofia. My co-publisher Patrick is at the scene and just talked to Sean – I had told him to look for you guys so we could find out if the project had any relation to what you were doing, which you both now have clarified it doesn’t. I have also added your quote to the ongoing updates in this post, for those who don’t read comments – TR

  • Sarah July 16, 2008 (5:54 pm)

I had Elisa Jaffe and a cameraman in my apartment getting live footage of the rescue. Not exactly what I expected to be doing after work today!

  • Sofia Zadra Goff July 16, 2008 (5:54 pm)

Thank you Tracy for updating your story. When we heard about this Sean rushed straight to the scene and met up with the property manager for the builidng there. I know that he and the owner of the building also are very concerend for the mans saftey. We are very worried about the worker and our prayers are with him. As we stated they are not working for us or on our restaurant, but we have gotten to know them as we have let them use our space to store tools and to park in front to help them do their work. All of the workers have been very nice and considerate and we look forward to hearing that the man is pulled to safety soon.

  • Sofia Zadra Goff July 16, 2008 (5:55 pm)

Sean just called that they got the man out and he is alive and in the aid car!

  • KM July 16, 2008 (5:56 pm)

Hooray! Just watched on the live video from King 5 as they carried the worker out of the trench on a backboard, carry him to the waiting medics where he was carefully transferred to a guerney, strapped in, and loaded into the medic unit. I got a little misty.

Feed just went black, I can hear helicopters flying away.

  • Pete July 16, 2008 (6:00 pm)

OK…now the helicopters can go away and gie us back our peace and quiet. I know that it was a breaking story but seriously….three helicopters hovering over head for 2 plus hours is a bit of over kill I think.

  • Beth Whitman July 16, 2008 (6:03 pm)

    YEAH for his safety.

And yes, overkill on the helicopters. How much did they just spend on fuel I wonder…

  • Nancy Folsom July 16, 2008 (6:06 pm)

Whew. What an ordeal for that man. Thank God it wasn’t winter (cold and wet). Rescue workers are awesome. Putting their lives on the line to save others. Maybe Fire & Rescue should have an appreciate day like the police got yesterday.

  • d July 16, 2008 (6:10 pm)

Glad the guy looks ok. And a big Way To Go to the rescue folks.

  • WSB July 16, 2008 (6:11 pm)

Good point, Nancy. And remember police were involved in this too – when we made our unknowing pass by the developing scene early on, several SCREAMED past us coming from east under the bridge, so they could quickly get the roads blocked off, etc. Re: the chopper fuel – as a former TV news exec (my last station didn’t have a chopper but my previous one did) I can say they’d consider it worth the $ for the shot of the rescue. However, we always used to wonder, couldn’t resources be pooled so ONE chopper could be shooting it and feeding everyone to cost-share (and these days, to save fuel!) – too competitive, still, though.

  • ricosly July 16, 2008 (6:33 pm)

Thanks for all the updates. It’s a bit unnerving to hear all the helicopters circling and not know why. Great to have a resource that was so quick to provide details.

  • Aim July 16, 2008 (6:56 pm)

As always, you guys have the details I want to know. I was on the 56 bus going down 1st (toward downtown) this afternoon at 4:30-ish and saw two motorcycle cops escorting two VERY large trucks with what looked like building materials (piping and such) and wondered what could possibly be going on. Now it makes perfect sense.

Our thoughts are with the man rescued, and our thanks to everyone involved.

  • Nancy Folsom July 16, 2008 (7:16 pm)

WSB, re: police involvement. Yes, indeed. It looked like several departments involved and coordinating. BTW, The vactor (what an ominous sounding name!) passed me on its way back to…where ever vactors live. Guys and vehicle looking ordinary and not the least bit heroic. Musta been in their secret identity.

  • C.A. July 16, 2008 (7:42 pm)

I was on a 55 bus that got stuck in the All Star Fitness parking lot after taking a wrong turn when we were being re-routed. That was quite the adventure! Couldn’t even leave since there were cars blocking the busses way, and the center hinge/accordion part of the bus became locked.

Glad to hear the construction worker appears to be OK!

  • CMP July 16, 2008 (8:04 pm)

Good to know the WSB will always have the story. I was stuck on the 22 underneath the bridge at 4:15 when we were rerouted back to Delridge. Needless to say, my bus driver caused a backup trying to do a u-turn with her articulated bus under the bridge on Spokane so we had to be rescued by Metro. It was hilarious witnessing how we were going to get out of that mess but I’m sure we annoyed all of the drivers trying to go about their day.

Sorry, comment time is over.
