I set up this site so that people who have a special bond with their animals have somewhere to go where they do not feel alone. I work mainly with hospice and very sick animals and it is amazing some of the cruelty their animal caregivers get from friends, family and co-workers. Including comments like it's only a dog, isn't it cheaper to buy a new one. This is very loved member of their family. Before judging please realize that those who care so deeply about animals are amazing people with an incredible capacity for love and sharing. So they may spend their money on animal acupuncture or other care that you see as ridiculous. Somehow that seems a better use of money than the commercialism that is rampant in our society. When you realize how much love a dog, cat or other companion animal can give, how much is unconditional love worth to you?
Veterinary acupuncturists in this area have a great enough demand that many of us spend most of the year not accepting new patients. I have only meet one animal so far that would not accept my treatments. Animals know when you are trying to help. I know many of you will see this is crazy but I would not have clients if people did not love their animals and if the acupuncture did not work. Please imagine how you would feel if some of the comments above were made about people.
Please instead of judging people, ask questions. If we all approached this world with wonder and curiosity imagine what it would be:-)

Lenamegan - I think that's really awesome. Acupuncture did wonders for me and it takes a real animal lover to get acupuncture, like it, and then think to themselves "I want to share this with my pet." Seriously - I think that's awesome. What kind of things do you treat specifically? I have an ill behaved crazy hyper lab/aussie mix. Wanna take a shot at him? I'll have your medal of valor waiting :)

Lena, we mock because that's our style, but we're really good guys at heart. And quite sappy when it comes to animals. I'm glad you're doing what you're doing, and that you're usually too busy to accept new patients. Thanks for the reminder.
Sorry to come off as defensive in the above post. This is an issue dear to my heart since I work with it every day. Cait-I mostly treat animals with cancer, paralysis, arthritis, chronic pain, kidney disease, strokes, and inflammatory bowel disease. I wish I could help with behavior issues but unless it is a change with age, such as old dog anxiety, usually acupuncture will not touch the super hyper ones. We do have some great behaviorists in West Seattle.

Please PM me - I'm probably within a week or two of having to put one of my kitties down due to cancer and I'm simply trying to keep her comfortable right now with meds.
Options are a very expensive surgery, meds or meds/time.... Anything you might be able to offer or suggest to make her remaining time comfortable would be most welcome.

Ivar, why must every gesture be compared to an even greater one? We should ignore the pain of animals because there is a human somewhere hurting worse? How sparse a life down there on Alki are you living in order to feel you can judge others? Do you really need to go out to dinner, own more than one outfit of clothing, have electronics and internet access, hang out at deja vu? Wouldn't that extravagance be put to better use helping the homeless?

The best thing about working with animals (the first feldenkrais lesson I ever gave was to my dog, now his gait is beautiful) is that they don't have an ego to get in the way of their healing. Humans try to reason their way out of being healthy and happy, animals don't.
After my wife died my dog was better than any human therapist too.

I just had to comment on this post. Years ago when I bought my last horse, he had a pre-existing injury. A vet recommended acupuncture. I honestly didn't think it would help but since I respected this vet's opinion very much I gave it a shot. It worked WONDERS on him. He overcame his injury and I competed on him for several years. If my current horse or dogs ever need it I wouldn't hesitate at all.
Hammerhead, do you know if your friend does work on horses?

my experience is that people who are insensitive to animals are equally insensitive to people.
I applaud any site that encourages people to share their experiences with their pets.
As for acupuncture as a treatment for dogs... acupuncture was cheaper and far more effective than surgery for my elderly akita with hip degeneration. That therapy bought her another two good years.
It's not for me.. but it sure worked for her.
I have to think my own bias gets in my way on this one.
I tried acupuncture on my goldfish...didn't wwurk sew guud!
