Latest city update on Admiral closures

According to this afternoon’s e-mail update from the city Transportation Department, the paving closures on Admiral aren’t scheduled to start till Thursday night. Click ahead for the full text of that e-mail update (including a warning for neighbors about possible side effects inside their homes):

The contractor is scheduled to repave the roadway at night, Thursday and Friday, August 9th and 10th (depending on weather conditions). Each day, work is set to begin at 7:00 PM and end by 6:00 AM the next morning.

The decision to perform the paving work at night is due to the confined space on SW Admiral Way and safety concerns. Measures will be taken to reduce noise. Jack hammers and the traditional “beeping” back-up alarms on construction equipment will not be used after 10:00 PM. However, during paving operations the contractor will use vibrating pavement rollers. Residents are urged to take all appropriate measures to secure valuables that may shake loose or be damaged due to the vibration.

SW Admiral Way between 41st Ave SW and SW Olga St will be closed (both directions) during the paving. Local access will be allowed for residents on Admiral Way and in the neighborhood north of Admiral Way. All other traffic will be detoured. As always, emergency vehicles will be allowed through the construction area as necessary.

*SW Admiral Way will also be closed (except local access ) at the West Seattle Bridge exit and at SW Spokane Street. Detours will be posted. During the closure, traffic from the east will be detoured at the West Seattle Bridge exit to Fauntleroy Way SW , and traffic from the west will be detoured at California Avenue SW. The detour route will utilize California Avenue SW, SW Hanford Street, 37th Avenue SW, SW Manning Street, 35th Avenue SW, and Fauntleroy Way SW.

*Current construction on SW Admiral Way includes repair of the roadway base, rebuilding and re-landscaping the traffic medians, and installing curb ramps. Traffic is restricted to one lane in each direction (24 hrs a day/7 days a week) for the duration of the SW Admiral Way project, expected to be complete by mid-August.

*Left turns will be largely prohibited from and onto intersecting residential (side) streets in the project area. Parking may be prohibited on the residential (side) streets approaching Admiral Way to facilitate the construction of new curb ramps at the corners.

Since this is my neighborhood, I was concerned about being able to get on to the bridge from Admiral Way on Monday. I sent an email to George Frost, the Public Outreach Coordinator. He responded quickly with this message below:

“If the weather cooperates, the contractor will pave Thursday and Friday nights and be done with it. Even if the side street approaches have to be paved on Monday, the contractor should be able to do the paving without closing down Admiral Way to traffic. The street surface will be open to driving traffic for the weekend.”

By the way, how do you do that nifty little block quote?

It’s part of the WYSIWYG editor in our WordPress theme … programmed into the CSS for this theme (“Pool”) … we just highlight the text in question, choose the blockquote button, italicize, and bingo.

Sorry, comment time is over.
